am I the only one that sharpens the image and then masks out out-of-focus areas like the background so the sharpening is only applied to the subject/s that I want to draw the eye towards?

I have a k20d. Indoors in low light the AF is decent if your subjects aren't fast moving. So, having said that, If you are shooting young kids playing or something like that the k20 might give you problems, but other than that the AF is fine in low light

I would start by using the recovery slider in camera raw. The other thing you can do is if you have CS4 use that targeted adjustment brush in Adobe camera raw to drop the exposure in just the areas you want.
I wouldnt expect much from burning an almost blown out area of a jpeg like that. Light burning is fine for midtones and shadows but highlights start to look really unrealistic when you burn them

YouTube - pentax 16-50 Lens test
that is the video i sent in with my lens to pentax, they replaced the lens. You should keep in mind that you have to send it in within the one year warranty period if you want pentax to replace or repair your lens

here is a link to a video i sent in with my 16-50 detailing the issues it was having. YouTube - pentax 16-50 Lens test
the 50-135 in the video is my new 50-135...the first one was replaced due to total SDM failure after 7 months
pentax replaced my 16-50, but i was 2 for 2 with SDM lens failures with my first two DA star lenses

I totally agree, This is why I shoot pentax right now. But if I had a bigger budget and could afford the more expensive lenses, It would be a hard decision.

yeah I agree, if it is not a huge improvement over the k20, for 1700 that is getting close to nikon d700 prices... If i had that kind of money to spend on a new body and it wasnt an amazing performer I would consider picking up a d700

Yeah the issue is going to be with the SDM mechanism. I have had two DA* lenses suffer failed SDM within the first year of use.

50 looks ok 135 looks backfocused some. redo the test with the camera on manual focus. take several shots while SLIGHTLY changing the focus and pick the best one. then see if it is still "too soft"

had it happen with mine, same exact thing. eventually the SDM failed and it was sent to pentax and replaced (sent it before 1 year warranty was up)

ive heard nothing but good things about the sigma 100-300 f4. and people also rave about it with sigmas 1.4x tc. that would give you a sharp 140-420 f5.6

Ive had all 3 lenses in this range, the 18-55 16-45 and the 16-50. the 16-45 is by far the best bang for the buck. the 16-50 is better but much more expensive and they are both much better than the kit lens in my opinion

I did notice the SR on my k20d never seemed to perform as well as the SR on my k10d, I have upgraded and hopefully this will improve the k20d's SR noticeably

I feel your pain, the SDM on my first 50-135 failed after a year. It was replaced under warranty just in time. I am concerned about the lifetime of the sdm system vs the screw mount. It seems like the screw mount might be a more long lasting design

the camera was on a tripod using center focus. i made sure the focus point right on the speaker. This is not a problem i get when only doing a test. whenever I use the lens during regular shooting it fails to confirm focus about 50% of the time.

It is still under warrany, It is just a pain in the ass to send stuff to pentax. My concern is that is is inconsistent, sometimes it works fine. So my concern is that I will send it to pentax, it will work fine for them and they ship it back to me and say its fine.

this is with a k20d. the lens is about 6 months old. and I was spinning the focus ring fast because it usually "locks" or whatever it is doing and if you spin it fast you can get it to break lose sometimes. (although i almost never manual focus or quick shift focus anyway) I have only had to with the 16-50 because of the poor AF performance.
