I have noticed recently that some new members joining the forum were using the K-20D. I decided to re-visit this camera myself. Here are a few test shots.

D FA21/2.4 on PZ-1p film camera - allegedly controlling the diaphragm? How?

The camera/lens compatibility page here on PentaxForums only includes digital cameras, not film ones, which might be a nice addition.

Urgent plea - Problem with O-GPS1 on K-70

I think the most likely cases have been covered here already. I would also make sure the battery is good as I didn't see that mentioned but I may have missed it if already stated. Letting it get a good fix and updated with the latest satellite info is one of the things that gets missed if a GPS unit has been off for a while or has been moved a large distance since last used.

Which Pentax cameras can use Electronic Aperture Control for lenses
Posted By vandergus

The MZ-6 and MZ-7 can do this. The MZ-S can sort of do it. It can shoot lenses with no aperture ring in program and shutter priority mode. But it can't shoot them in aperture priority mode because it doesn't have a way to select the aperture on the body. It uses the aperture ring on the lens to shoot in aperture priority.

Also remember that a lot of lenses that don't have aperture rings use an electronic aperture control and no Pentax film cameras have the ability to use those lenses. Film cameras that are controlling lenses without aperture rings are still using the little mechanical tab that sticks into the camera to physically move the blades in the lens. A lens needs to have that coupling tab to work with film cameras. For example, the Z-1 can fully utilize the HD D-FA 100mm f2.8 macro but not the D-FA 21mm f2.4 Limited.

Edit:
Cameras that can use all shooting modes
  • Z-1

  • Z-20

  • Z-70

  • MZ-6

  • MZ-7

  • MZ-30

  • MZ-50

  • MZ-60

Cameras that can control the aperture in limited shooting modes
  • MZ-M

  • MZ-5

  • MZ-5n

  • MZ-3

  • MZ-10

  • Z-10

  • Z-5

  • All SF

  • All P

  • Program A

  • Super A

You may have some dust on the PDAF sensor at the bottom of the camera body. Take the lens off, hold the camera upside down so the lens mount is pointing at the floor and then gently blow a few puffs of air into the bottom of the camera (rocket blower preferred). It may dislodge whatever is mucking up your focus. - Jack

Moskva 5 and weird issue

Was the previous film showing the problem possibly of the same (faulty?) batch? ... that is to say, was the damage there before the film was put into your camera?
Alternatively, the fact that the problem seems to occur only when there is a double thickness of material makes me think of a narrow fixed slit somewhere, when the camera is closed.
Maybe the pressure plate is seized, or is the rear door bent or buckled at all?
As with the take-up spool, there's no picture showing the rear door or pressure plate ;)

Highly unlikely. I have used 3 rolls of film on this camera. All 3 were purchased at different occasions. All different stock. 1st roll was Fomapan Action 400, 2nd Kentmere 100, 3rd Kentemere 400. All show the same issue.

That seems to be the case, as soon as thickness doubles there seems to be some problem. But it is hard to see where it could be, all the surfaces touching the film around this area seem to be very smooth now. There might be something wrong with a pressure plate. It really does seem a bit rough. I mean, it has some rust around the edges (but edges of the film look fine). It looks to me, that stripe would go through the 6x6 window hole in relation to a pressure plate, but in that area it looks fine, smooth, not worn, nothing sticking out. That said, I do not like those springs to which pressure plate attaches. They seem to be bent to me. Also pressure plate sits a bit at an angle. But if I push it, it moves up and down, springs back to it's position if I press and then release it. It just does not happen as smoothly if compared to some of my other cameras (which are for 35mm mostly). The door it self latches nicely and does not appear to be bent or damaged.

My bad again :o

---------- Post added 03-15-24 at 12:32 AM ----------

While touching all things around the backing plate I've noticed that this frame selection lever is quite sharp.

Looking very closely through the gap just before closing the door, it also seems to be very very close to the feeding spool roller. Also, if I'll depress the backing plate fully, then this lever would protrude higher than the plate. Additionally it seems to align well with my pressure mark. Could this possibly be my culprit? It would be very weird as it would point to some sort of factory design flaw and thus should be much more wide spread and known... I'll have to think of a way to verify somehow.

Aperture diffraction question

Diffraction measured right at the aperture only depends on aperture diameter obviously. So, for the same f-number, longer focal lengths have larger aperture and therefore less diffraction. However, there's glass behind the aperture. For longer focal lengths, the airy disks get magnified and therefore become larger on sensor.
Turns out both effects cancel each other out.
Diffraction is therefore (in theory) independent of focal length and only depends on f-number.

Not my area of expertise, but this is an excellent tutorial on lens diffraction Diffraction Limited Photography: Pixel Size, Aperture and Airy Disks

The bottom of page 1 suggests just the f number is the important factor.........

"Independence of Focal Length.

Since the physical size of an aperture is larger for telephoto lenses (f/4 has a 50 mm diameter at 200 mm, but only a 25 mm diameter at 100 mm), why doesn't the airy disk become smaller? This is because longer focal lengths also cause light to travel farther before hitting the camera sensor -- thus increasing the distance over which the airy disk can continue to diverge. The competing effects of larger aperture and longer focal length therefore cancel, leaving only the f-number as being important (which describes focal length relative to aperture size). "

Just kidding, but that's been my problem on FB for over a month now. Social media companies like to show us what they think we want to see, not what we actually want to see.

The K20D was my first DSLR, and I used it a lot from 2009 until I purchased a K-5 in 2012. Coming from film cameras and a 2 megapixel Canon Powershot the K20D was a revelation, I learned a lot from taking photographs with this great Pentax. I now use the K-5 and K-5iis as my main DSLRs but somehow I miss the colors and image quality of low ISO images (100-400 ISO) from the K20D. In fact I unpacked the K20D from the box where it is stored and charged the battery for the first time in many many years, planning to use it in the near future. Here are some old shots from my K20D:

It would involve levels of decadence and licentious excess not seen since the days of the Roman emperors. Offences against all good taste and decency that couldn't possibly be described among company such as this.

Edit: So basically the average sort of Saturday night I used to enjoy back in the days when I was young and pretty.
