SMC-M Pentax 50mm f/1.7 Not Sharp

if its not sharp at f8, theres something wrong with the lens. if its not sharp by f2 theres something wrong with the lens. your logic is somewhat backwards.

SMC-M Pentax 50mm f/1.7 Not Sharp

why is everyone suggesting to stop down to f8 and even f16? What good would that do? If there is something physically wrong with the lens
to affect sharpness, it will be aparent at 1.7, but by f2 or f2.8, it willl be all but assured, and you can better rule out focusing issues at wider aperture. Stopping down to such apertures is not feasable for everyday use, and could help mask any issues that could genuinely be affecting the lens' performance. You should be testing for issues between 2 and 2.8 ideally.

the first part of your post makes no sense. You answered your own question. As to the lens, eveyone here seems to forget or haven thought (especially the op) about the fact that we are talking about used vintage lenses, that have an unknown history. so blaming the an entire series for one lenses poor performance is just nonsense. The M 1.7, like virtually all pentax 50-55mm lenses gives excellent performance, even wide open. But then virtually all such lenses, no matter who manufactured them perform well, as they are all based on the same few basic optical formulas. If your particular example is performing poorly (or worse than you assume it should) and you are sure its not the film, the development, the camera or the scanner, then the lens is certainly to blame, but not all M series, or 1.7's or 50mm's. Just your lens.

Since we dont know the history of the lens, its hard to say. The most probable culprit is something like an element isnt in properly, or it wasnt reassmbled properly at some point. Such as an element put in backwards or something similar.

i might be able to offer an opinion, if i knew what you were referring to. At present, i cant answer about what i want, or where i see this going as i dont know what 'this' is. Did something go over my head or is this just some abstract piece of nonsense that cant actually be answered?

UV filters ARE important!!!!!

so did you get this 'nick' in the front element while using the lens, or were you carelss with the lens in another manner. Your story didnt actually explain how your lens got scratched, therefore i cant see as an observer, tha the lack of a UV filter was to blame. I have taken my 700 dollar zeiss 50mm to the top of a mountain, down through dark and damp caves, riding on top of jeeps (google 'jeepney'), into crowds of protesters, etc. It has never had anything but the hood for protection while in use, and a front lens cap when not in use. Not a single scratch.

The simple fact is, anything can indeed happen at anytime. Which means filter or no filter your lens can get scratched, broken, etc. Theres no way to say really that its absolutely good or bad to always have a filter. Youre taking a risk either way.

yea, id think since these are the opening ceremony uniforms, if headwear was desired, we would do good to wear something more formal than a baseball cap or god forbid a visor. we may disagree on what looks ugly here, but I would rather see our guys and gals in the most french of berets than to take the world stage looking as silly as they would look wearing that uniform and a visor. talk about bad taste.

as for the beret itself, the only difference I would imagine there being between these and a ‘military’ beret is how they are worn. those berets could be worn very differently and look much better. certainly better than a visor. *shudder*

why is everybody hating on the beret? The looks of these individual berets aside, theres no reason to be hating on the beret with comments like this. Our military wears berets, and i dont see anyone making such comments. What do you suggest they wear? Covering up the ridiculously oversized polo emblem though, im all for.

Case n' lens correct? Auto-Takumar 1:3.5/35
Posted By séamuis

yes, that is correct for the lens. This lens was available alongside the last of the 'heiland' honeywell pentax cameras. After that they were only 'honeywell'. You can find a heiland lens cap on lenses of that period from time to time, but such is increasingly more rare today, along with heiland branded bodies. The lens could have, depending on what year it was made, and possibly which market it was being sold in, had either the more standard for the time brown leather AoCo case, or a black one with the more typical textured leather like all later cases. But still sporting the standard for the time AoCo logo on the top.

Enjoy the lens, its a great piece of glass, performs very well and as you already know, is great fun to use due to its size. The auto-takumars are my favourite series. Great lenses.

I don’t see any publishing or copyright date, but there is no way for me to know if all the pages are included. I don’t know what the manual may have been like when new. my guess though based on what is available in the manual, is early 70’s as there is reference to the Spotmatic SPII.

how can they be against a law that is in place currently in Massachusetts, that has proven to work, is still working and was and still is the crown jewel of the now assured republican party nominee. the man they are pushing to represent their party is a champion of essentially the exact same law that they are trying to repeal. and his law has proven to work! I can’t be the only one who sees who crazy this is right? I mean lets forget for a second that they want to repeal it with no viable or even unviable alternative to put in its place, despite admitting that healthcare needs reformimg. but how can they say its terrible for the nation when there is proof it works, and it comes from the very man that they say is who they want to be president. how could he even repeal the law nationwide and say its bad, when back in the state he enacted it, it would still be in place and working?

no, see you assume that by doing things this way that he absolutely will have a camera full of dust and debris, but the fact is, you cannot prove that this is even big issue. you don’t know how he even changes lenses and bodies. you don’t know what, if any precautions he takes in the moment of changing to prevent such issues if he feels the need to. I work as an active photojournalist and documentary photographer, I work pretty much as he does when it comes to the way I carry my equipment. I have only ever had to clean the inside of my two camera bodies once in the last three years. if it was a big issue like you assume it is, surely he would be having so many problems with this that he would change his methods. see you assume here, you don’t know. so you can’t prove such to be a con, you just think its bad.

I’m not going to argue against your views. and certainly a little prevention does go a long way. and yes, people in this line of work carry bodies and lens setups to facilitate as few changes as possible when working. but the truth is, every second does count, and a lot of people care more about getting every possible shot than making sure no dust or anything gets inside the camera or lens. one or two seconds can be a lifetime in that line of work. what if you fumble or drop caps when trying to change? what if you drop the lens trying too put on or remove caps? you can actually change lenses pretty fast without even removing it all the way from the bag if both the body and lens has no caps to deal with. thus pretty much eliminating the big risk of contamination and removing the time lost and possible issues of fumbling with caps in a high paced stressful situations. ill take the risk of possible dust or derby getting inside, than take the risk of losing a shot I’m getting paid to get. period. and clearly, he feels the same way.

maybe so, but theres no con either is there? he’s showing how he actually carries and uses his gear. personally I think its necessary to show exactly how he carries and uses his gear if this video was to be a proper, insightful demonstration. I can tell you this, that he’s not in the minority when it comes to photographers who work in this and similar fields. a lot of people work this way. the gear isn’t a personal hobbyists investment, where they worry about resale value later on. these are TOOLS, nothing more.

right now, for my personal photography I shoot mostly film, I move at a much slower pace and I have one camera and two lenses that cover pretty much all my personal needs. a Pentax Spotmatic, Zeiss ZS 50mm 1.4 and Zeiss ZS 35mm 2. I’m sure you cn figure the cost of those two lenses alone, plus what I sank into CLA’ing and a general restoration of the body. I don’t baby it one bit. never use lens caps, the 50 has scratches even a couple dings. (the lens hood has seen better days) the 35 was a recent acquire, but the 50 has traveled all over the philippines and through some pretty crazy places, where people would cringe to take a fully weather sealed lens. its a tool, for getting photos and thats what I do. I don’t buy a single piece of equipment, with the thought of resale value. (Not counting my phase of classic equipment collecting that I’m still ridding myself of) I buy what I need to get the photos I want and then use what I buy to the fullest extent, to get those photos. thats how pros like his guy work. and his photos speak for themselves.

you may not personally like the way he does things, but you must surely understand that what he does and what you do are very different, and that needs to be stressed here. you may not like it because it doesn’t fit your personal way of thinking right now, but I bet if you were transplanted into his world for a day, you’d might walk away with a different attitude toward how he carries and uses his equipment.

when I’m working for the newspaper here, I work very similar to this guy. I carry two bodies, neither ever has a cap. I carry my lenses with rear cap off for quick changes and never have a front cap. what you see here is the difference between a professional photographer and amateurs who do this as a hobby. the comment about the ‘might want to resale later’ pretty much sums it all up.
