Poll: DP review reccomending the K-1 in a certain category

The fact the flagship K-1 is in the $1200-2000 category up against the likes of (3rd tier) Nikon D610 and Canon 6D reinforces the value for money. No wonder it did well. But it would have been interesting if DP had also included it in the Semi-Pro category (as they did with the Sony) up against the (2nd tier) D810 and 5D Mark III. Price aside, that would seem to be the more relevant category for comparison.

Dumb. Why insult the company that has done us all a service and chosen to invest in continuing the brand that many of us love, and more importantly, the K-mount that many of us are heavily invested in. And with the K-3, Ricoh have demonstrated great respect and responsibility to the Pentax brand and heritage. Some may mock, and I know it is mostly (I hope) in jest. However, it is time to take a reality pill. Ricoh have not put their name on the back of a Pentax camera. Ricoh have purchased the Pentax brand and logo and put it on the front of a Ricoh camera. I would like to see the Pentax brand continue and I am pleased to see that Ricoh is now displaying and associating this brand and their company logo together with pride!

How do you think they pitched the idea of K-01 to Pentax High Command?

I think it would have been pretty simple proposal:

Engineer: Make a mirrorless camera based around the K-mount, K-5 sensor, improved imaging engine and video capability
Decision Makers: That just sounds like a DSLR camera without a mirror. What would you suggest?
Marketting: Don't make it look like a DSLR camera without a mirror?
Decision makers: So how do we ensure it doesn't look like any other cameras?
Engineer: Get someone who knows nothing about cameras to design it
Marketting: Great idea!!! There is this hot shot Aussie designer, Very hip. Does furniture mostly.
Decision makers: Approved.

Any problems with sdxc and RAW?

There was a problem which affected compatibility with some SDXC cards but this is fixed with firmware 1.13.

I know this for a fact because I used to get image corruption errors after deleting RAW images in camera using a 64GB Lexar SDXC . I've not had any issues since upgrading to 1.13.

Photozone re-reviews FA 43 Limited

I have just re-reviewed Photozone and decided their conclusions have little relevance to real world photography. I don't care what they measured, the 43 can produce sublime images that people look at.

So I've revised my overall rating of Photozone from "Interesting" down to "Almost meaningless"

Pentax Unilateral Pricing Policy

and can I add #5:

5. They are not too concerned if sales in the U.S. decline because their focus is on entering new markets in China and India where the middle class is growing rapidly and will be wanting lots and lots of flashy new consumer goodies, and Canon and Nikon do not already own the market.

Just a thought :)

Perhaps, they should put cigarette style warnings on Pentax packaging:

Warning: Does not contain fullframe upgrade path. This may cause shortness of breath, anxiety and obsession. If symptoms persist then please discontinue use and seek alternative treatment

Pentax Unilateral Pricing Policy

No argument that the Pentax 60-250 is now overpriced compared the competition. The point is that Pentax-Ricoh are clearly moving towards more consistent global pricing and distribution. This will no doubt also entail more dramatic price difference between their low-end consumer products and higher end (such as the 60-250).

So as the owner of a Pentax DSLR, your choice is not beween the Pentax or the Canon. It is between the pro grade DA* 60-250 or the consumer grade DA 55-300.

Edit: Just another thought; If I reflect on my own situation, I am locked into Pentax because 22 years ago when I bought my first SLR, the Pentax SF-10 was the cheapest and felt best to hold and it came with a cheap Sigma zoom. That is how you recruit new Pentaxians and build market share. But you make 80% of your profit from the 20% who are already locked into the k-mount and prepared to pay a premium for better quality.

Here we go again...

News Flash... Pentax do not make a fullframe DSLR... I repeat, Pentax do not make a fullframe DSLR. Anybody who NEEDS a fullframe DSLR can buy one from Nikon, Canon or Sony.

For existing Pentax owners;

If you purchased an APS-C DSLR under the naive assumption that Pentax where then obligated to produce a fullframe DSLR when you decided you wanted to upgrade, then you are advised to make future purchases from a manufacturer that actually sells the type of product you NEED. Meanwhile, you are advised to stay indoors and refrain from whining about it on social media.

If Pentax does eventually release a fullframe DSLR (and I hope they do), please not not be alarmed. Your APS-C DSLR will continue to exist and will still be capable of producing fantastic images for anyone who actually goes out and uses it.

Please stay tuned for further news flashes.

Pentax Unilateral Pricing Policy

Funny, based on this thread you would get the impression that Pentax owners all over the world are unhappy and planning to leave the brand. I was starting to think I am one of the minority still content to stick it out with Pentax.

But having seen this poll (still active), only 9% who responded so far are planning to jump ship. A number of those responses are probably intended to send a message to Ricoh:

Edit: upto 13% now... amazing how many of the people leaving Pentax are still actively posting on a Pentax enthusiast site!

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/general-talk/181504-staying-pentax-jumping-ship.html

Many Pentax owners in the U.S. are understandably unhappy/angry about the extent of the price rises for certain lenses. But the number of customers Pentax-Ricoh is going to lose "worldwide" over this is not significant. Ricoh is surely focussed on attracting a new generation of customers "worldwide", and probably happy to see the back of the vocal minority who have had enough and spend their recreation time trying to convince others why they shouldn't stick with Pentax.

You still have a choice. If the DA* 60-250 is way to expensive, then the DA 55-300 is still a decent performer at a reasonable price.

You still have a choice. To stick with Pentax or to move on. There are some fantastic and tempting cameras on offer elsewhere, and always will be.

If you have made your decision to leave Pentax then good luck and I hope you will be satisfied. But there seems to be a lot more talk and threat of leaving than actual leaving.

K-5 Silver Special Edition w. Silver 40mm XS Lens

as nice as this seems, they have just diminished the value of the "Limited" edition by releasing it twice!!!

They sold 1500 Silver units last year, at a premium price because there were only going to be 1500.

This just tells us there is nothing coming to replace the K-5 for a while.

Not sure if you are joking or not, but they are def not the same. And there was a real SDXC compatibility issue that this update fixes.

If you don't use SDXC and have not experienced any problems then no need to upgrade to 1.13

I know it probably seems like the least interesting new offering. But if the DA 50/1.8 is optically based on the F/FA 50/1.7 then it should be a super fast focusing all round good performer. Just short enough to be a cheaper lighter alternative to a DA40 or FA43 and just long enough to be an alternative to the DA70 or FA77 for available light portraiture.

Assuming pricing is similar to the DA35/2.4 then they should sell a gazillion of them. Although, I won't selling my Limiteds ever!

Lens for low light/indoor

Hi Sany,

there is one general advantage of an f1.x lens stopped down to f2.x, compared to a lens of the same focal length with maximum aperture of f2.x. The image quality of most lenses improves significantly when stopped down 1 or 2 stops from maximum. So the image quality from a 50mm/f1.4 stopped down to f2.0 may be better (sharper, less vignetting etc) than a 50mm/f2.0 wide open.

Also, in extremely low light you still have the option of shooting wide open. The lens may not produce it's sharpest images, but at least you can get the shot!

Personally, for portraits I use either 85/1.4, 50/1.7 or 77/1.8 and stop down to f2.0.

This generally provides sufficient centre sharpness (particularly on the eyes) but still very shallow DOF and nice background bokeh.

Of course this is all matter of personal preference. There are plenty of f2.4 and 2.8 lenses that can produce beautiful portraits. A fast f stop is just one factor.

Have fun!
