The fact the flagship K-1 is in the $1200-2000 category up against the likes of (3rd tier) Nikon D610 and Canon 6D reinforces the value for money. No wonder it did well. But it would have been interesting if DP had also included it in the Semi-Pro category (as they did with the Sony) up against the (2nd tier) D810 and 5D Mark III. Price aside, that would seem to be the more relevant category for comparison.

As I said previously, you are not expecting too much to get sharp/in focus images from your 24-70 on the K-1. Your sample image suggests you may simply require a bit of calibration using "AF fine adjustment".This is quite typical and does not indicate that your lens (or camera) is defective or poor quality. Surely it is worth giving it a go.
At first I was annoyed that it should ever be necessary to do this, but it is worth the effort to check/calibrate every lens you have on your K-1. If you do return the 24-70 then you should still do this for whatever lens/lenses you get. Good luck.

I was also underwhelmed with my first shots taken with the 24-70 on the K-1. Images did not look at all sharp when pixel peeping on the cameras LCD screen. A quick test indicated that my 24-70 was back focussing slightly. After making AF fine adjustments in the menu I have been very satisfied with the sharpness and overall image quality. You should be able to get high quality images from this lens. If AF fine adjustment doesn't result in sharp images then you should return it for another copy.

I think the real answer here is to get more disk storage. Add another drive if you can (internal or external) or backup and then replace your current drive if you must.
Even if you chose to shoot JPG, you are only another shoot or two before you hit the same storage issue.

What software are you using to make the timelapse? Check the frame rate setting.

I'm just curious whether the need for AF adjustment is as prevalent on the K-1 as on previous Pentax bodies. Perhaps it is pointless but I felt like asking. I wonder what is the point of responding to a question you find pointless :)

Having been used to the need for AF calibration for most lenses on K-5 and K-3, I had no reason not to expect the same with the K-1.
So far I've been generally happy with K-1 focus accuracy, out of the box, with most of my 'old' lenses (mostly FA & DA primes) so haven't felt the need to perform a thorough calibration.
But today my new 24-70/2.8 arrived and clearly needed adjustment. A +4 adjustment did the trick.
Just wondering which lenses you have needed to make AF adjustments for on the K-1?

You can enable this to work in the custom menu.
Go into the menu, and scroll to the 4th/last tab on the C menu. The last setting on this list is "26 Using Aperture Ring". By default this is set to 1 which does not allow shutter release unless aperture ring is set to A. Set this to "2 Enable". You can now shoot with the aperture ring manually. Obviously you need to also set exposure manually or use the Green.

Yes, this doesn't sound right. There is no way the official launch is scheduled for the day the shipment arrives. Far too risky. More likely that first shipment stock is available at least a week earlier. The question then is does the distributor delay fulfilment of pre-orders until after the official launch?
For those of us that pre-ordered early, April was the expected date. So while the official launch was subsequently planned for 10 May, I think it is unlikely that pre-orders would be deliberately held back.
Edit: I got an email reply from Ted's in Melbourne advising they will ship "early next week". I hedged my bets and pre-ordered from Ted's and CRK. I doubt they would tell me that unless it was confirmed. ---------- Post added 04-29-16 at 01:14 AM ----------
Thanks Glenn. I can understand DigiDirect desire for exclusivity for official launch for new orders and perhaps get the jump on other retailers. But can't see why this should effect pre-orders. Neither Digidirect nor CRK stand to gain anything by delaying pre-orders.

When did you pre-order? I was told shipping will start early next week. Is it possible your order missed the first shipment and 10 May is the second?

I emailed Ted's in Melbourne yesterday asking if they had received any further update regarding shipping date given it is now well into April. They then contacted CRK for an update and sent me an email this morning advising that:
"the eta at suppliers is 30 April. So we would expect it here in store first week of May".
Fingers crossed. Sounding promising.

Hi Malcolm,
Thankyou for communicating directly with us (Aussie Pentax users) via this forum. As you can see, it is easy for speculation and rumours to take on a life of their own. So it is greatly appreciated that you shared information about CRKennedy's current situation and future plans.
I have two questions if I may regarding availability of the K-1: (note: I have pre-ordered from CRK)
Based on latest update from Ricoh, When are you realistically expecting to commence shipping?
Secondly, in addition to fulfilling direct pre-orders, are you also planning for retailers such as Ted's to receive stock from this same first shipment?
Thanks and Best Regards
Dave

I've hedged my bets and placed two orders. One directly with the Australian distributor CR Kennedy. They wouldn't tell me how far down the list I was but suggested they already had a lot of pre-orders. So I also placed order via Ted's in Melbourne. They ordered 5 and I am first on that list. Both orders can be cancelled, so it's a race. FYI, Ted's price was lower.

Me too, but more hoping than expecting. Lens design and coatings have come a long way in the digital era. I expect these film era lenses will show their age. However, they will have to do for now.

I own both the 85 and the 77. A detailed analysis would reveal subtle differences but they are both wonderful portrait lenses. But which one is the "ultimate"? The 77 has fewer optical flaws and is probably the better lens technically but, for me, the 85 is THE ultimate lens. It balances perfectly on the k-3 and is a joy to use. The images have a special character, hard to define. Wide open it is sharp in the centre but quite soft at the edges and corners. For tight portraits this produces beautiful bokeh and backgrounds just melt away. It is a matter of preference, but if I could only keep one it would be the 85. Good luck whatever you decide.

Yes, I been using this Joby hand strap for a few months on my K-5 and now on my K-3. The strap is very comfortable and secure. I have found it really helps to stabilise the camera when using larger lenses such as the DA* 50-135 and even DA* 300 handheld. I haven't used it with the battery grip but it should adjust sufficiently to fit. The Arca Swiss plate fits securely without interfering with battery cover and makes it very convenient to be able to instantly mount onto tripod without having to remove the strap and attach a separate plate.
I use two different tripods. A compact Sirui ball-head with arca swiss clamp, and a larger Manfrotto with 3-way head and standard quick release plate. Because the Joby grip is now permanently on the K-3, I've just bought an arca Swiss fluid head adapter for the Manfrotto. Also considering buying a second Joby strap for the k-5 as well.
It is quite expensive for what it is, but still Highly recommended (IMO)

I think this is interesting. Seems like quite a bit of effort required to process DNG/PEF in order to produce results similar to out of camera JPGs with K-3. I have always preferred to shot RAW but I am shooting DNG+JPG with K-3 and generally preferring the JPGs. Maybe it is just Lightroom, but hate to admit that JPGs are maybe good enough that I am starting to question whether PP effort is worthwhile. Having said that, I will continue to shoot RAW+ just in case.

The K-3 or the K-5 are technically capable of producing WOW results. I think it is upto the photographer to make it happen.

Dumb. Why insult the company that has done us all a service and chosen to invest in continuing the brand that many of us love, and more importantly, the K-mount that many of us are heavily invested in. And with the K-3, Ricoh have demonstrated great respect and responsibility to the Pentax brand and heritage. Some may mock, and I know it is mostly (I hope) in jest. However, it is time to take a reality pill. Ricoh have not put their name on the back of a Pentax camera. Ricoh have purchased the Pentax brand and logo and put it on the front of a Ricoh camera. I would like to see the Pentax brand continue and I am pleased to see that Ricoh is now displaying and associating this brand and their company logo together with pride!

Let's be realistic. The K-3 isn't a Pentax camera with Ricoh stamped on the back. it is a Ricoh camera of Pentax heritage with Pentax stamped on the front. As long as Ricoh continue to make great cameras with a K-mount then, as far as I am concerned, they have the right to put the Pentax brand and the Ricoh logo together. I (and my collection of Pentax K-mount lenses) certainly hope they continue to do so.
