Are the Eye-fi cards worth it?

A few lines of Tcl/Tk code could easily monitor the upload directory and fire up your favorite image viewer when new images are detected. A few lines of PHP code could display them in a browser and a bit of JavaScript could even auto-refresh that page.

People shouldn't be so afraid to write their own software.

Got an answer from Pentax customer service, pointing out that

So I've put "split video into multiple 2GB files" onto my firmware wishlist.

For my final entry I would like to get fully on topic and remind everyone that A) Wednesday (May 11) was the 10th anniversary of Douglas Adams death and B) May 25th is international Towel Day.

Towel Day is observed by carrying a towel all day. If you are a Douglas Adams fan, this feels NORMAL and you actually feel a little lost and uncomfortable the other 364 days of the year.

See you froods out there.

Why doesn't this stunt double even look like a mouse? Are we still shooting the same movie?

Well, this is a little bit disappointing.

I got a Class 10 SDXC card (Transcend) and the only difference this makes is that the camera will happily format it in exFat instead of FAT32. It will still not record any more than 10 minutes of HD video for a single shutter button press.

I say "a little bit" (disappointing), because recording hours and hours of continuous HD video isn't exactly the purpose of this camera. On the other hand it would make such a great dash cam for a motorcycle.

I'd be interested in some photos showing the bad IQ and lens flare issues.

I found that if I keep the ISO <= 200, the IQ will be OK. This thing is designed as a point and shoot for the outdoor enthusiast. Logically all the default settings are suitable for an inexperienced user. I turned off some of the auto settings, customized the green button and don't expect it to produce the exact same results that a DSLR can produce. This is a camera to have "outside" your floatbag on a kayak trip, to "use" during a downpour while hiking on or to take snorkeling.

Yes, it can. The reason why it "seems" loose is because the outer parts of the doors actually are a bit loose. Both doors (the one over USB and HDMI ports as well) are made of multiple parts, that are connected loosely on purpose. There is the part on the hinge with the gasket, that actually seals the compartment. Then there is a sliding part that keeps the door closed and finally a little lock on that slide, that prevents accidental sliding (open). These are plastic parts, not precision machined stainless steel. Naturally there are small gaps that allow you to wiggle that outer door part around a bit. The way it is assembled avoids that this wiggling on the outer part moves the actual door and causes wear on the rubber gasket.

Anyone tried the WG-1 yet?

I did not have any waterproof camera at all before (except for an action-cam, but that is irrelevant in this context).

My previous camera was a Casio Exilim EX-V7. That camera took a serious amount of abuse last year when we did a 100 mile backpacking trip in Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico. It made it off the trail in one piece and still works, but I don't want it to fail in the middle of some trip. I still have 2 years of scouting to go (if my stepson sticks to it all the way). That's part of the reason for a waterproof camera like the WG-1. Our troop doesn't do much singing, but a lot of hiking and camping, no matter what the weather is.

I only have it for 600 shots so far, but what I've seen from that is pretty good for a rugged outdoor camera. It has some really neat features, for example the 5 LEDs around the lens for 1cm macro shots like this one (the photos have links to the full resolution images):

That itsy bitsy spider is less than 1cm small but has 10 eyes

It also is reasonably quick in acquiring a focus and has plenty of tricks up its sleeve (like trainable pet face recognition) to help with that. Here is one taken of a moving target at full resolution of 14M.

The 5x optical zoom is actually usable in its full range. There is often a problem with these small lenses that they start to blur the picture when zoomed in more than factor 3-4. Not so with the WG-1. The only point of critique I have on the zoom is that it doesn't allow me to use the optical while taking video. One is restricted to digital zoom which makes taking 720p pointless if used beyond 2x. I know, one would hear the zoom mechanic in the audio recording, but may I please make the decision to accept that or not? If someone from Pentax is reading this, please add an option to allow optical zoom while shooting video to the setup in the next firmware release. Thank you.

I also like the features like continuous shooting, interval shot and interval movie shot (for time lapse). Certainly not the main purpose of a camera like this, but nice to have.

Bottom line is I absolutely like this camera and think it is well worth the money.

I got the WG-1 without GPS for two reasons. 1) because if I ever want coordinates, I know I want the accuracy of my 60CSx. 2) because I never want to have accidental geotags on my photos.

Are the Eye-fi cards worth it?

As far as I can tell there is zero difference between using the Eye-Fi provided card reader and the built in card reader of my ASUS 1215N. When I insert the card into either of them, the media upload, the Eye-Fi Center can configure the card and the card shows up in Windows Explorer as a mass storage device.

I thought he meant that he want's the "camera" to become an SMB server.

I don't have an I-droid, or whatever the latest and greatest may be. My Eye-Fi is only allowed to ever connect to my netbook, and only after I explicitly started the Virtual WiFi Ad-Hoc on that netbook. I really like to review and post-process things before publishing anything. I sometimes take pictures of my guns or my family and I don't like their serial numbers or private moments to be posted publicly by accident.

WG-1 Video recording limit

Browsing through the K-5 part of the forum I got a hunch.

First I was wrong. The card I'm using is not SDXC but SDHC. Second the camera apparently limits the recording time to what it estimates will result in ~2GB file size (although the maximum file size on FAT32 is 4GB - 1 byte). I tried formatting the card as exFat, but then the WG-1 doesn't recognize it any more.

Does anyone know if using an actual SDXC card would solve this? Being waterproof and shockproof would make it the perfect dash cam to use on a motorcycle.

This is not accurate. In my setup, the Pro X2 Eye-Fi card only knows about the Ad-Hoc network configured on the Virtual WiFi of my Windows 7 netbook, using WPA2 encryption. The "hostednetwork" is only started on demand with a little batch script and it deactivates when the computer is rebooted or cycles through hibernate/standby. The Eye-Fi is configured to only upload the media to that netbook and this works with or without the netbook being connected to another AP with internet access. I created a share for those upload folders on the netbook, so when at home, I have easy access to them from my desktop.

There is an "endless memory" option that you can configure. You specify a percentage of memory to be used. The card will then automatically delete the oldest successfully uploaded photos to keep the memory usage under that setting.

How much of the card's firmware memory area would be used to implement a sufficiently functional and secure SMB server?

WG-1 Video recording limit

Hi everyone,

I recently got a WG-1 and am overall very pleased with it. The only problem I have with it is the time limit for video recording.

It seems that the camera always wants to record to its internal memory, then transfer to the SD card when the recording ends. This limits the time for continuous recording to about 10 minutes in 720p @30FPS. The card I'm using is an Eye-Fi 8GB X2 card, which is a Class-6 SDXC. I assumed that a Class-6 would offer the speed required to directly record to the card.

Is there some option in the settings, that escaped me so far?

Thanks in advance
