Is this not a good time to invest in Pentax?

Ok, my question for the OP is how many times in your photographic life experience have you switched camera brands in the past or just upgraded your lenses and/or camera bodies? There is no return on investment in photographic equipment. It goes something like this "Do I like it? Can I afford it right now? If I find I don't like it after I acquire it am I ok with not getting all of my money back out of it? If I love it and they no longer make it, will it change what I love about using it?" My suggestion would be to go ahead and buy the K-1 and any lenses you are interested in, but begin saving for a future camera and lenses. If they turn out to still be Pentax, wonderful. If not, you will get some money out of the Pentax gear to add to your savings and can buy another brand of camera. With any camera brand, I think the bigger concern/risk is that the supply chain of parts dries up because a third party supplier goes out of business and there is a gap in getting another supplier for the part(s). I also have to say that I am really tired of all the whining about the lack of lenses. For goodness sakes. How many times have you had the perfect lens set up and still missed "the shot" because you did not bring the right lens with you?

I'm sorry I don't spend all my time on PForums and didn't respond in a timely fashion. I don't NEED Panasonic-level video (although I'd certainly like it!) but I need something that's usable.

Ricoh isn't winning market share and isn't exponentially increasing profits by not firing on all cylinders and without being competitive.
Sony just overtook Nikon as #2 in the camera market by delivering massively on nearly every aspect of the camera excluding an OVF.
They're beating everybody on just about everything (A9) in a very short time span.
Would Ricoh fly up the market share ladder if they spent on trying to make every aspect of their camera better than the competition?
No one knows, but the proof is in the pudding.
I love Pentax and am a die hard user, promoter and supporter (which is why I'm shutting my mouth after this comment), but I'm not gonna blindly say "stop complaining, good enough is good enough."
It's not. I swear Pentax is a nerd brand which is why I love it, but nerd brands don't win. What headline reads better, "Pentax introduces camera with lightning fast, crazy accurate AF" or, "Pentax introduces camera with Pixelshift, which increases dynamic range and sharpness when used with a tripod with a completely still subject"?
Which reads better, "Pentax introduces camera with gorgeous lossless 4K video", or "Pentax introduces camera with Astrotracer, which when mounted on a tripod uses GPS to move the sensor with the rotation of the earth to prevent star trails"?
I know what works for me and what works for us, but that nerdy stuff doesn't influence the market, the media, not the public. Don't believe me? Just look around.

HOW Dare you speak like that of the 21mm lens. Oh yea....I had it too and got rid of it for the same reason :)

I also have the 31mm and love it on my K-3. I really like my DA 14, FA 31 combo. Two great lenses.

Thom expects a new Pentax camera

I wont even say anything about what this Thom claim to know!

But i have to rant about Pentax biggest problem: The users (not all, but many). The long time users want new cameras, but they want Pentax to keep them in the past, making it harder for Pentax to get in the future. They want to be able to use their old glass, be quirky and nerdy. Im struggling every day to get new and young users to get over to Pentax. But its a hard task..Because the things said above, doesn't attract the younger and moneystrong generation at all..It even scares some of them away. Why do you think Olympus, Sony, Fuji etc attracts so much new photographers? They do the opposite of Pentax. If you want Pentax to grow bigger, catch up with the big ones and attract new and young photographers, the solution is to bury the past and look ahead into the future. I know Pentax is sentimental for many, but most people wants the newest and the best, because for them it is a tool. Even the french saw that at the end with their Peugeot and Citröen. Now they make state of the art cars for the future and they are rising.

That said, Pentax is trying to please everyone..But its hard to move forward when you one foot in the past and try to put the other one in the future.

And dont get me wrong..I love K-1 and the new lenses..But my main job is to attract new users..and THAT is not an easy task...

Its a great value. I don't have an issue with the 36MP sensor, but this camera is pretty much 5 year old stuff. They even went back to USB 2.0 and stuck with SDXC UHS-I when several companies like Fuji have moved to UHS-II. I thought USB 3.0 and UHS-II were a given for a new camera. Those are minor features, but all the more reason for them to use them.

As I have said in previous posts. All the modern sensors are more than capable of professional results. It will be the AF that will make or break this camera if Ricoh is serious about the PRO market as some people have claimed. The D750 is selling for $1,999 so if Ricoh can match that AF performance, they will have a winner at the current price.

It's a fair question. I guess they were just waiting for the D800 sensor to find it's way into the bargain bin.

I do wish they had been a little bit more ambitious, particularly with the AF and the viewfinder. I was SO looking forward to wider frame coverage AF, and focus peaking (or similar manual focus aids) via an overlay in the viewfinder.

Oh well. There is clearly value there, so I will probably still buy one.

Because you have insulted their family, their shaolin temp and their honour.

These kind of post will always happen some of the key words we see , you don’t need a FF to take photographs like that, most photographs you will post would show no improvement with FF and other.

Truth be told some of the very arguments put forth here not one would hold against their argument for using an APS-C camera over point and shoot but more than likely those individuals would battle to the death that their APS-C is needed. One could also argue that most APS-C cameras produced in the last 8 year would have no problem with producing the images presented here but again they would argue to the death that the upgraded was needed.

Photography is like a finger pointing its way to the moon, concentrate on the finger and you will miss all that heavenly glory .

Norm...you somehow find it easy to criticize everyone else's work but never your own? Why the need to bash people that feel differently than you? The photos you just posted...I'm sorry but they're not very good examples of what gear can do. The only photo that seems fine to me is the 4th to last.

You also mention numerous times how FF users praise FF as the holy grail and can't take no for an answer...but it seems to me that it's you who's too stubborn to look elsewhere and see the benefits. I have very little doubt there is a need for an APS-C body next to a FF, but it serves a very specific purpose. Now please, accept the fact there's people with a different opinion than you and there's nothing wrong with that.

Anyone still want Ricoh to make an effort in video?

Video. With a one word change to "Cinema", it creates another category and aesthetic.
Calling those functions as "niche" for users here only highlights that Ricoh/Pentax needs to do more as others mostly use C300s/A7s/FS7/GH4 and others to perform those functions.

As great as my FA Limiteds are in Photography, they are dreamy when it comes to my Cinematography.
When I put my DA and DA* lenses on my FS7, I am thrilled to get awesome looking images.

As a visual creative, I prefer to have one camera with me.
Since I shoot with multiple cameras always, it simplifies my workflow.
Mostly the K3 does the job...it could be so much more.

How interesting folks discount the cinema ability of our cameras.
If photography was truly the only thing that mattered, the 645D is going for around $4k now, which is a steal.

I am not too concerned with "Video", but the "Cinema" aspects of Pentax cameras are what matters.

---------- Post added 10-09-15 at 12:59 PM ----------

So when it comes to video...and with the delay of the FF...I took that money and bought a drone.
As a visual creative - and NEVER having flown ANYTHING - I took my enhanced equipment/portfolio and "Cinematic" aesthetic (taken from being a photographer for years and years) and applied it to my new "tool".

I created a 5 minute "eye candy" video.
All these shots would have made awesome "non-moving images" - as in photographs.

Youtu.be

Which opened up new doors for me to do more.
I now have another arrow in my quiver.

So "cinema for Pentax" cameras, only adds another tool to an awesome platform.
A visual creative only needs tools to take their aesthetic to the next level.

A Gentle Reminder: Keep those reviews on point

This thread would leave the impression that people are under rating lenses because of silly things, but my perception is that most people over rate their lenses. It is silly if all lenses fall into the 8 to 10 range. I know that modern lenses are all at least decent, but that still doesn't mean that there isn't a range.

I am afraid that people take price paid into account in their review. If you paid 25 dollars for a lens, then you tend to judge it less harshly than if you paid 1000 dollars for a lens.

It does well using the ghost reduction feature to select the exposure with the motion detail I want to preserve. I typically only take 2-shot brackets (0ev and -2ev), but depending on the change of movement in the scene, I may add a little manual blending if required. The toughest HDR situations I encounter are with spinning wind turbines and I can mask out(or erase) just the blades I don't want to see before feeding the exposures into HDR, and (HDR Efex) works with the information it has.

Norm, it was my kid IIRC. You were furious at me for making something you said look silly, and you lashed out in about the worst possible way, veiling it as a "I'm just making a suggestion about photography". Which fooled no-one. It was really low-class, but what really makes it worse is that you (IIRC) have never apologized. Anyone can have a bad moment, but...

I think you spend a lot of time in the non-pentax and FF forums just making yourself really mad. We've suggested you maybe re-think that, and you take it as a "get out of here" directive and double down on the thick-headedness. Don't know if there's a fix for that. I guess if you enjoy it, for some masochistic reason, you're entitled to continue.

Ever notice the silence that accompanies most of your over-PP'd landscape shots?

Hi all,

I have had my GR for a couple of weeks now and am so very much impressed with it. I have run it through most of its paces in comparison to what I was doing with my K30. I have to say I think the high ISO capabilities are better with the GR. The only area where it can not compare it with true macro but that was to be expected. Anyways my final comparison was with something that a good mate and myself like to get out and do and that is spinning burning steel wool. The look on my mates face when I rocked up with the GR on my tripod was priceless, he is a massive Nikon FF man. I think the end results speak for themselves, my bud was more than impressed.

Cheers

Here is the essential conundrum for Pentax (doesn't matter who owns Pentax).

The USA market, whether or not largest on earth any more, is at least the marginal market for high-margin products. Everything depends upon whether the USA is a relevant market for Pentax now and in the future. Without an effective marketing and distribution channel in the USA Pentax has a very tough challenge achieving volume at high-margin prices. We've seen that Pentax doesn't desire volume at low-margin prices. Canon and Nikon dominate the store trade - box and boutique.

Pentax can have all the products we want, complete, ready to manufacture - but until PRIAC gets its act together and PRI comnmits long-term, repetitive investment into market development PRIAC is going nowhere. Without PRIAC high-margin products aren't likely to achieve launch volume globally.

Without PRIAC there won't be - there can't be - any Pentax FF camera (and lenses, and attachments, and accessories).

Until just 6 months ago Ricoh's business plan was essentially, lay off employees of IKON Office Systems (restructure) globally to recover fromt the disastrous 2008 acquisition of that company. Pentax cost $100MM +/-, not a small sum in the middle of a losing period, but not a backbreaker, either. However, the add-on investments necessary to rebuild Pentax (not the product stuff, which they have - the distribution channel), especially in PRIAC, was a deal-breaker. When you are retrenching in one division expanding in another just isn't going to happen - the Finance Guys won't allow it, and money always has the deciding seat at the table. Always.

Pentax is telling us they have the desire, they have a plan, they have the technology, they have the prototypes, they have the business relationships with third-party suppliers --- they have the Product!!

But they don't have permission of the Finance Guys yet. And they won't get that until PRIAC is fixed. Good luck on that, Mr. Malcolm.

Ogl - you don't know your business as well as you seem to believe. Its all about money. Always has been, always is and ever shall it always be.

Well, I now own a K-01. My thoughts.
Posted By Docrwm

I took my own advice and bought a K-01. I got it for $316 with the 40XS lens and feel that is a steal of a deal.

For those who have been reading my posts for some time they know that I was an early and vocal critic of Pentax and the K-01. I did handle them and found the ergonomics severely lacking and the rubber SD card door a joke. I have never negatively commented on IQ. I also found the initial price to be absurd for a camera with no view finder and other issues.

Now that I own a K-01, in Yellow by the way, I have other thoughts and wanted to share them. I was struck by the praises in several recent threads that are a bit Pollyanna IMHO. Hopefully I can offer a balanced perspective on the K-01. As background I have owned a K-x, K-r, K-5, and Q (in addition I have several film SLRs by Pentax). I still have the K-5 and Q. My lenses run the gamut from Limited Primes to Consumer Super-Zooms in both AF and Manual flavors.

Image Quality - Excellent - period. The IQ on the K-01 is slightly better IMHO than that coming straight out of my K-5. I realize this is weird given the nature of the sensor and other issues but it’s what I am seeing under real use, non-controlled, circumstances.

Autofocus - Good. Once I installed the new firmware things got a bit faster. It's still not as fast as my K-5 but it’s better than the Q. Accuracy, its apples and oranges for accurate with the two focus systems. I can say that it and the Q are on more equal ground but again I find that the K-01 nails the focus more often than the Q but that may have to do with DoF and crop factor.

Image Write Speed - Poor. It just doesn't take pictures with any real speed at all. On the menu for continuous shooting they have disabled (but it’s still present in greyed out form) the Hi option, so at least they are being honest. Side-by-side my K-5, in the same AF mode, can run rings around the K-01 in the number of images taken and written.

Ergonomics - Poor. Don't care what others have to say, it's a PITA to use the skittle buttons, and the shutter button and the on-off switch design have made me miss the press more than any other camera ever. It's a brick and it is nice to be able to sit it on a flat surface in Portrait orientation but its clunky to handle and the smokestack knob for the mode is huge and disproportionate. The Flash button gets hit by accident, again more than any other camera I have owned, because of its placement. Bottom line is that form took primacy over function in this design, and that is never a good decision outside MoMA.

Intangibles - Good. It uses K mount lenses natively which is a real plus for Pentaxians but relatively irrelevant to non-Pentaxians. Bottom line is that Pentax is an obscure brand with a limited lens lineup now so the K-mount feature on a MILC is not a big selling point outside our community. Common battery with my K-5 is another plus but only for someone with a K-5 or K-7, for others AAs would have been a MUCH better selling point. Negatives are the SD card door and its double layer and the rubber outer cover - it IS going to break, perhaps not right away but it will and I can find no listing for a replacement anywhere on any Pentax website. I hope they have a good supply of them. Rear LCD appears to be superior to the one on my K-5, not sure if it’s just me or there is a real difference I haven't found that spec to compare online.

Bottom Line - I own the K-01 and am impressed with the IQ and image output, which is the real measure of a camera IMHO. The ergonomics are pretty bad IMHO but at $319 with the 40XS lens are something I am, obviously, willing to deal with for now. Would I own this as my only camera, even at this price, no way. Because I already own a range of K-mount lenses and have D-LI90 batteries it makes a descent 2nd camera for me. Why Yellow? A couple of reasons really. It's different. It's less intimidating than Black because it doesn't look as professional. I am finding that the reaction to my K-5 is FAR different from the reaction to my Q, even though both are interchangeable lens cameras in black. The yellow on the K-01 is also defusing the "Pro Camera" reaction from others already and getting me more true candid photos immediately. Overall, if you own a K-mount camera and have the lenses already getting the K-01 at $300ish makes a good bit of sense to me. If you don't already own K-mount lenses - why? So, for now it has a place among my cameras and I hope to enjoy using it as much going forward as I have my Q.

Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION
Posted By froeschle
Replies: 502

274 users already have signed this petition to de-cripple the Pentax K-mount (i.e. to restore the aperture ring coupler).

Excerpt from this interview:

QuoteQuote:

Q: Will the Pentax K-mount ever be "de-crippled" (i.e. will the aperture ring coupler be restored?)

QuoteQuote:

A: technology ... develops ... less importance for the users ... user merit ... user feelings ... if voices will be increased ... yes ...

One of the very few reasons, why I would consider to buy an APS-DSLR again: A de-crippled PKAF2-mount.
An important feature, which the D7000 offers but the K-5 II(s) still lacks.
Why not invest some cents or even dollars?

Pentaxians, let your voices be heard ;) :) !

Copied from #117:

QuoteQuote:

To summarize:

Statements from the interview at Photokina:
  • Feedback from enthusiast users will not be ignored in the Ricoh system.

  • A de-crippled K-mount would be realized (i.e. the aperture ring coupler would be restored), if such "user feelings" are expressed and the corresponding "voices will be increased".

Why this petition:
  • De-crippling the K-mount will lead to an increased and/or more reliable functionality with all lenses possessing an aperture ring.

  • Such an implementation would be straightforward (present in nearly all Pentax film SLRs) and at low cost (mechanical sensor + software implementation). Considering the price of a current DSLR, the additional charge should be marginal.

  • Thus, it is an ideal test case to check the promise of Pentax/Ricoh. Do they really care about the wishes of the enthusiast user base? Nikon, in comparison, cared and realized such a feature.

You did suggest some kind of "voting system or counting system" or "a poll". I asked for a counter or an "I'm in" button. This is the response I got from PentaxForums.com Staff:

I like being liked ;) . So, do so, if you wish (-> Pentax/Ricoh: De-cripple the K-mount! PETITION - PentaxForums.com). However, this thread is rather meant to support the idea or the petition (and not me :) ).
Just a reply here also would not be sufficient, as some members post several times and not all members agree with this campaign.

Please add your positive vote at the end of the thread.

A printed version of this thread was given to the Pentax representatives at CP+.
The journalist of pentaxforums.com also included a brief paragraph about it and explained it verbally.
Unfortunately, they did not want to comment on it.
There was also no chance to chat with them after the interview.
So, communication still seems to be based on "transfer and pray".
Hopefully, they will take our feedback to heart.
