So, what about that K-3?

Just wondering why people want a fullframe camera from pentax? Current lenses would be rendered far less useful, and new lenses would work on only that one body.

1.3x APS-H is a much nicer compromise in my opinion.

All the fuss about AF point size

If you really want to *see* the right size of the af points, set live view AF to phase detect (in the live view menu). Then, focus on the edges of things and you'll see that the entire rectangle of the 9 cross points is COVERED by the AF points.

1.3x crop
51 point AF
AF-C update frequency increased to 125hz
Better grip
24 MP
8 fps
AF-on swapped with green button
Useable 12.8k / great 6400
100 base ISO
Slanted shutter release (a la d800/d4)
Huge, bright pentaprism that looks like the Roman Eagle (d700)
Better quality control
Hardened plastic screen and top lcd
OPTIONAL live view zooming when focusing
*Instant* review (though I never use it)

Won't be buying that, but I can drool over it, and the possibility of getting it.

Haha, I didn't mean it that way.

Coincidentally, I met two young, female olympus 4/3s users yesterday, which is ∞% more than the number of pentax users I saw.

I'd imagine the 35/1.8G is more suitable as a standard prime over the arguably less mainstream 75mm equivalent.

They're all reasons that I don't care for or are blatantly wrong. Advanced technology? Point out one area where canon beats anyone (in photography). Outside of photography, nikon makes the imaging equipment that sony uses to make their sensors. You know that EXMOR one that's making such a splash? Ken Rockwell has tons of information on this area that is also irrelevant to photography. I have no idea what you're on with the AF as they're roughly the same now that the 5D2 has been surpassed. Before that, D700's autofocus>>5d2. D300s>=7D. I prefer nikon's optics in their 24, 35, 50 and 85 fast primes as they bring together the best combination of sharpness and bokeh. In reality, they're probably very similar. Canon seems to be marketing at the aperture junkies with their ultra 24-70 from both parties didn't impress me at all, and felt more like expensive, well built kit lenses than the much nicer 70-200 flagships from both camps. Both have the 16-35 but Nikon has the option of perhaps the sharpest mainstream landscape lens.

I'm surprised at the 'more lens choices' argument coming from a pentax user, especially when Canon has about 9 more lenses than Nikon, and the lead goes heavily to Nikon if you include backwards compatibility. If there ever was any concern about AF on entry bodies and older lenses, then the person is probably looking at lenses that no entry level buyer would use. Nikon allows the OPTION to put on older lenses with quirks and issues, but canon has none. That's like saying apple is more consistent because it offers you zero modular choices.

I wonder how many people use 'old AI lenses on entry-level bodies' and if there is a single person in my state that does this. In contrast, how many people have APS-C specific lenses and a fullframe body at the same time? While canon has no option of mounting them onto the fullframe body, nikon allows it and it works acceptably with the full imaging circle with certain lenses, such as the 35/1.8 and 11-16.

I've noticed that 4/4 Pentax users that I've talked to have been more interested in talking about Pentax gear than anything else. Understandable, as there's rarely anyone else to talk to about this stuff, but after the standard "wow another pentax shooter, nice to meet you", it gets to the gear talk really quickly and suggests that there's a lot of pent up excitement for being recognised. The same conversation plays over in my head "I don't want to hear about how amazing our K-5's are, or how our lenses have this 'special rendering' and fairy dust, or how awesome we are for buying pentax, or how it's us against the world because of this". All were male and over 40.
I don't want to talk about my gear, I already know and use it well!

edit: I mean no offense to anyone, but check yourself to see if this relates to you.

Things you want Pentax to improve on K5

Well my wish would be to improve focus speed and accuracy in low light, and versatility and clarity of the points in normal light. Shooting a dimly lit event, which nearly ALWAYS happens these days, is a horrible nightmare even with a flash's AF grid helping out. In bright light while shooting sports, it's a little too slow at updating the focus when in AF-C mode to be useful. Of course these are rather difficult environments but they are ones that I must shoot in. I can work around my gear but I feel that this camera demands too much of me. I love the K-5 for nearly everything except this.

One last thing, the lens release button seems like it'll fall off one day, and it's very small while being placed in a weird position that's also flush with the body. That makes one handed changing a pain.

For my personal, artistic usage, this camera is a joy to use, but for professional work, it makes me want to slam it into a pole some times.

Considering returning K5 - some questions

No, you are correct. The k-5's default screen has a 'dirty' rough look to it that is not present in other DSLRs. It can be annoying but doesn't really affect anything.

My horizontal level is a tiny bit off. It's a useless feature anyway unless you're hanging upside down from something.

The lens price increase affected me in the same way. Bang/buck was killed and I'm a little uncertain about the future.

I hope it was already inside the camera. Anyway, even if I can't get it fixed, it's reinforceable with a screen protector.

How unique are the Pentax Limited Lenses?

Strange and curious. I once asked an optical engineer (maybe that's why :P) why they made bodies out of Mg alloy but lenses out of polycarbonate, and he gave me a few reasons, one of them being that one.

Anyway, I personally prefer polycarbonate lenses, partly because they include my most lustworthy ones. However the 28 elmarit and 40/2 ultron are some metal lenses that I really love.

Mostly off topic, but this must go somewhere.

Metal (steel) is perhaps the worst material to make lenses out of with modern technology. It's comparatively heavy and temperature sensitive while not offering anything over polycarbonate versions, except for a perceived superiority on par with luxury cars, ie, unjustified increase in price, causing a reduction in bang/buck.
For build quality, any increase in toughness when it matters is offset by the greater force experienced throughout its life. Drop or bang a metal lens into anything and it is likely to experience double the force compared to a homologous polycarbonate one, which is likely to decentre elements and damage the housing.
The subjective 'feel' of a lens is also questionable, as metals are great heat conductors and will drain heat much faster from the user in colder weather, which is rarely desirable. Steel also expands and contracts much more significantly, possibly affecting focus accuracy and focal plane placement, as well as other optical alignments.
After using several zeiss and leica lenses in moderately adverse and demanding conditions, as well as an autofocus pancake, I find that calling 'metal construction' an asset is a terribly misguided act. In general use, it is not a significant liability unless the weight penalty gets too far out of hand (often with zeiss slr lenses compared to their equivalents). However, the issue of cost is a global one, and as long as the luxury, high quality mentality exists, it is unlikely that this issue will subside.
Steel is a physically poor material to create precision instruments that may be subjected to moderate environmental stresses in the face of polycarbonate.

I don't even NEED to pledge. If I buy two pentax lenses, it'd cost more than a d700 + 70-200. I'd switch before I bought a pentax lens.

It feels really 'cheap' to me for its reputation and price, like something poorly made in china. The rear thumb spot creaks a little under normal operation; the buttons feel poorly made/designed, not quite deep or reponsive; the button layout is slightly dumb, what's the point of the AF-On when you have to shift your grip to reach it?; there's dust behind my lcd, in a weather sealed camera; the grippy rubber has tiny gaps where it attaches to the body that could weaken over time, shown when I see water spurting out when I use a rocket blower; nearly all the connective junctions on the body have gaps like the one between the eyepiece and its surrounding plastic, which lets dust get annoyingly jammed in the middle, shutter button is very bad as the half press is not well defined, occurring very close to the actuation point, which is very shallow and doesn't allow smooth transitions. For example, I can have the D700 on CH and focus and take a single shot while not shaking the camera. With the K-5 I have to quickly take off

TL, DR: Zero attention to detail on the build quality. I say this because cheaper dslrs and micro four thirds cameras I've had before have not had these little problems. I could see these problems existing in entry level cameras like my friend's 1100D, but not a fully weathersealed 'professional' camera body. Unfortunately, I don't want to pay a whopping 60% more for a d300s or 7d that is built perfectly but performs worse and weighs a ton, or 35% more for a d7000 that is also built well but doesn't have as much flexibility as the K-5 (especially in cold and harsh weather).

I know on brand specific forums people sometimes get defensive on this stuff, so don't get me wrong. I'm really happy with the operation and performance of this camera. A testament to this is how it makes shooting with a kit lens bearable. I won't get into the system itself as I knew what I was getting into (aside from the surprise price jump). This is by far the best camera that I've OWNED, better in some areas than most that I've borrowed, but I am not as 'amazed' as others. Satisfied, in the true meaning of the word, is quite a fitting descriptor of me.

Oh that sucks. I actually 'use' the weather sealing quite often. It's under warranty in Europe so that doesn't really help.

I've noticed some dust in my screen that definitely wasn't there when I got it, and I have no idea where it could possibly enter a weather sealed camera.

Has anyone else had this issue before? I'm planning on leaving the dust that's already inside, but I don't want any more to get in as they are quite visible in certain situations.

Standards change all the time, otherwise death from sickness wouldn't be an issue at all and all fields would not have ever advanced. I know it makes people feel like more worthy and better photographers when they slag on people who talk about gear, but they manage to do nothing useful while distracting from the valid issues at hand.

Obviously everyone can take fine pictures with a kit lens, but most people find them lacking in some areas at times. This argument would be more valid if pentax had a complete selection of the most basic bread and butter lenses, such as a 50/1.8 equivalent. I know the 31/1.8 costs a lot of money (so it must be good), but all the pictures I've seen from it look no better, or even worse than the 35/1.8 from sony and nikon.

50-135 went up by $650
40/2.8 went up by $150
21/3.2 went up by $50
Even the 35/2.4 went up by $50

All just before I was going to buy them. I bought pentax for these lenses, but looks like my budget won't be able to handle it anymore. If I'd known that I'd have to pay an extra $850 for this stuff, I would have bought Nikon. Very unfortunate as I was hoping to receive the 50-135 and maybe a flash in time for an event, now it looks like I'll have to borrow a D800+85/1.4G off a friend :D:D:D
