I used thousand oaks solar filter material. I made a filter for my camera and a 4inch offset filter for my telescope.
Nearly all the images I took were with the camera. My old 10 inch reflector was a bit much to deal with.
I did decide I am going to make a full aperture filter for the scope using Baader solar film as it will give true color rather than the yellow to orangy color the thousand oaks does and the sun will be much easier to stay on. If I want color I will add it with Photoshop.

Yep, I was going to use with laptop which does not have A/V connections. Although I did find male A/V to HDMI but I would need female/female adapters.
Thanks for the correction.

I have a K30 from just after they were released if it makes a difference.
I have been told on the forum about the cables they use.
I went to WalMart and with my cable because I know asking for help without a visual aid would have been useless.
I looked at both micro hdmi and mini hdmi cables. Both are bigger than the connector on my Pentax cable, so what is this connector? I ordered a cable from Amazon which was suggested to me but I am pretty sure it is not going to work, not unless WalMart and Best Buy just have it all wrong.

Thanks man! I was in Daphne a couple weeks ago at Eastern Shore Bike shop. I snapped over 200 pics yesterday. Some thru my 10 inch reflector but most were shot sitting on my deck in a chair. Every couple of minutes I would point the camera skyward and take 2 or 3 pics. Here is one of my mamma dog Wolfus. She was wondering why I was sitting in the sun.

Thank You for your answer. I kinda feared as much. I was hoping there was some mysterious battery I was unaware of. LOL

Whenever my battery dies I have to set the date and time. Is this normal? It does not seem like it would loose date and time when I first got the camera, but I may have forgotten.

Thank You all for your help. The eclipse will start here in Mobile at 12 central. I am going for a bike ride for a couple hours first. Then I'll carry that 10 inch reflector out and set up everything and hopefully clouds and rain will stay away.

I went ahead and ordered an AC power adapter and the micro hdmi to hdmi cable Adam suggested to me. If I'm out taking pics of the sun and night sky the power adapter will be better than the constant changing of batteries.

Yep, my K30 is from not long after they came out. I have used Wasabi batteries before with other gadgets. The The ones for the K30 are Powerextra batteries. It could be an age thing. I have noticed with the lithium batteries of inferior manufacturing that they tend to leak internally and either give up the ghost or loose capacity like these are doing. Time for new batteries. LOL
Talking about batteries reminded me to upgrade firmware on the camera. I went from 1.00 to 1.06 in a single leap. I don't notice or see a difference. LOL

Yes, I have a solar filter for the camera and my 10 inch reflector. Not only would there be a fire on the sensor my retina would be fried/boiled, sizzled. LOL I have been taking a number of photos using the camera and camera/scope combination. The only real issue I am having is focusing for a good crisp pic. They are close but when the astronomy forum people look at them they say they are slightly out of focus. I readjusted the diopter today so maybe that will help.

I'll check out the other program. PKTether was working fine just no live view.
I went to Best Buy to see if I could find a cable to go from the K30 to HDMI but this store has become useless. I have not been to one in several years.

No live view with pktriggercord either. The program works but I think I like pktether better and it seemed to work for me. Oh I just realized what was meant by your quote. LOL I'm thinking about tomorrow and taking pics of the sun. I suppose being able to view the pics instantly will work. I can adjust focus if needed by viewing the pics. I hope anyway. Now I'm having an issue with my batteries. My Pentax battery is fine but the NOS batteries aren't lasting long. Junk batteries.

I am using pk tether for my K30. My eyes are old and thought it might give me a live view so I could focus on a bigger image but it does not. I am using the mini usb to regular usb to connect. Do I need mini to HDMI? I don't know what I need. I have not used the camera and a laptop together before.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have been imaging sunspots and can't quite get them in focus. I can't use my glasses while shooting.

Still waiting for my sd cards to come in the mail.
I have not had time to mess with the camera. I have a carpet layer here and he is on his third day. Hopefully he will be done today so I can get back to normality. I bought a foreclosure house and it needs work. The paint is don't somewhat and carpet will be. Then I can move some furniture in, relax a little and read .
I received my tripod yesterday. It is heavy, it's a Silk 700 something. It's well built and rugged looking though., then they give you cheap little nylon bag for it. Maybe I will my K30 dslr photography skills on the house.
Thanks for everyone's help.

What I like to shoot? Everything! I was in the military for awhile and was stationed overseas where I deployed regularly. In England I photographed the landscape, castles, airplanes, friends getting wasted, girlfriends. In the Azores it was the landscape and airplanes, and the people. In Norway it landscape, military ships and submarines. In Iceland planes and ice. In Saudis Arabia landscape and airplanes, and the people. In America our country, everything. I especially liked the Grand Canyon, and mountains of the North. When flying on military aircraft I liked taking pics of aircraft refueling and fighters flying a few feet from our wingtips.
When underwater diving, most anything is interesting to capture except for dead reefs covered in silt.
I guess I like capturing most anything. Oh, did I mention my dogs and my bikes, and communications equipment, and firearms? :)

The problem with powering on is solved. I had the battery in correctly and the little latch down far enough to lock battery in, but I did not have it pushed far enough down to depress the switch that is there somewhere, I pushed a little harder and heard a click and now it powers on.

I looked at the manual for the camera and assumed it so thick because of other languages. I was wrong, it's all English and I have some reading to do.
I also found out I guess that you can not turn power on without a memory card installed. My sd cards won't be here till tomorrow. Oh well it will give me time to read.
All comments, tips, suggestions welcome.

I''ve been wanting to replace my old 35's for awhile now. My K1000 and A3000 have served me well but the allure of a dslr was to much. I have bought digital cameras and they were okay for general stuff. I bought this camera by GE and when I opened up the box for the K30 today it's button layout was a lot like the cheaper GE camera. Of course the K30 has a few more buttons and rotary switches and will likely out perform the GE a hundredfold or more.

I am happy with the camera so so far. I went ahead and bought a Pentax zoom lenses to go with the 18-50 that came with it. The zoom lenses is 55-300 so I should be happy for awhile.
My only moan is the Pentax bag, they could have put a pocket on the side or somewhere to hold the different accessory manuals and disc. So overall no complaints at all.

I am sure since I am new to the dslr world I will have a few questions soon. I also got a Pentax flash unit for the camera. I have a lot of reading to do so I will end this now.

If anyone has any accessory suggestions or other tips they will be much appreciated.

I just had a thought, will the old Cokin filter system work with this camera if you can find the correct adapter ring?
