I recently picked up a second copy of this lens while purchasing a bag of stuff containing a target item.

It has been a little cool around here but clear which is great as it has been probably one of the longest wet and grey period of weather in quite a long time.

I shot these with the K5 I picked up last summer. Between the camera and the lens very nice colours and exposure.

I suppose most of us have a copy of this lens. I have accumulated quite a number of them sufficient to do a type study. Unfortunately, I don't use them often enough so they remain on shelves, in bags, and on desk top.

This particular copy I picked up yesterday at a thrift store. It was marked down because it was broken. Just needed the little pin on the rear surface to be depressed to switch to manual. All was good.

Ran around the backyard sampling with it just before the rain started today. Shot wide open. Still good colours, decent out of focus areas, and good isolation.

I was able to take this lens into the backyard this afternoon and enjoy using it with the PKA adapter. The lens and the K-5 behave very nicely together.

This is a horizontal crop of a vertical image:

It is the 7 element Super-Multi-Coated version. The extension tube really shortens the depth of field and the wonderful way these 50's handle the out of focus areas really shines on the full frame.

I rooted through the cabinet looking for an Adaptall lens sporting the PKA mount adapter to use on this lens with the K-5. Previously I had used the basic M42 adapter which allowed for only wide open exposures shooting manually in Av mode.

With the PKA adapter things are a bit easier but subject to what the camera determines are optimal settings for conditions while in P mode. I must admit to being very pleased with what the software decided in most instances.

Not controlling the depth of field was the most entertaining due to allowing myself to be surprised by the camera. On the whole a lot fewer underexposures compared to my last outing which shared the same bright early afternoon conditions.

I had let this lens linger in the cupboard too long.

After taking a session with a Vivitar 85-205 zoom using the close focusing feature I was reminded of how much I enjoyed the rendering of this classic Tamron macro.

The K-5 tends to under-expose and super-saturate when shooting wide open so some taming was required in LR.

I used the Tamron screw mount adapter so closing down the aperture wasn't an option. Can't say that I complained too much as many of the resulting images appealed to me.

I shot these wide open which isn't the real strength of this lens. Probably better at 5.6 or 8 but I was impressed nonetheless.

I had been shooting the Takumars I own mounted to a Sony A7ii or a Sony NEX5n and had been reluctant to post here as it was non Pentax gear.

The K20D i loved to use developed an incredibly annoying artifact on all the images consisting of a straight line from one edge to about 45% into the fame in the lower left of the frame.

I suppose I could have left it alone and superimposed a signature line just above it but I couldn't stop being annoyed.

Recently I moved the camera along to someone I hope can appreciate using it for a while and bought a gently used K5. Pretty pleased with the "new" camera and the old lenses.

So with increased confidence in belonging on this forum I post the following images I took using the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50 1.4 (can you legitimately contract this to SMC or S-M-C?)

I have several versions of the Takumar 50 1.4 and prefer the first two issues. This one is no slouch and I thought great fun to use. While underexposing on the K5 at the wider apertures there is a charm to the images and a little post processing goes a long way.

Been quite a while since posting here. Rough wet winter is a partial excuse.

Regardless, I enjoyed using this old favourite while on an outing at a Railroad Museum in Squamish.

I brought this lens along with me today. I stumbled across it while trying to track down my Super-Takumar 35 3.5. Realized I had not used this 4.0 version in quite some time.

The out of focus areas are quite busy and slightly harsh unless there is a good distance separating subject and background. There is vignetting, the colours are a bit muted, but I still like what I got.

The lens deserves some more time getting to know how to use it.

Super-Takumar 150 4.0

This is the lens I was planning to use this afternoon. I regularly shoot 135mm so I found this lens reasonably easy to adapt to.

Minimum focus is around 6 feet so it too will be a candidate for extension tubes when flower time comes around again. Colours and contrast need a bit of a boost but I like the out of focus rendering very much.

The lens uses 49mm filters so even with the dedicated hood it remains quite light considering it's reach.

Like the Takumar 200 3.5 you can isolate your subject quite nicely or stop it down and get a very detailed image. I think that this "in between" focal length will probably stay in the bag most of the time.

Thanks for your thoughts on my problem. The lens' camera end is a female unthreaded bore with three set screws. I imagine the lens adapter has a groove that the three sets screws use to lock the lens longtitdunally while a larger single screw with a knurled knob is used to prevent rotation or allow spinning the camera between portrait and landscape modes.
I can probably guesstimate and prototype but was hoping there was someone with a copy of this lens to hand.

Does anyone have or know where one is of this lens.
I have one but the part that couples to the camera appears to be missing.
There is a recess with three set screwsthat I believe receives something like a T-mount adapter. My understanding is that Sigma had a lens adapter system which was proprietary.
I would be looking for a photo or two of the adapter and a few measurements. Not necessarily Pentax as I will be using the lens with a Sony E mount that I have adapters for several systems.
If this Sigma mount is familiar to you and you have another lens that uses it the info would be just as welcome.
Thanks in advance

A little on the mundane side but the area I had intended to use this lens at was far too cold for my taste. Roughly 20 deg F with the biting wind chill factor. So these were taken more as test shots around the medical clinic I took a family member to.

Interesting out of focus areas and a colour rendition I like very much. Will use it more when either it warms up outside or I become less of a whoos(SP).

K10D prism housing interferes. You can use an extension tube at the price of infinity. Mirror less the way to go. Love to see some sample photos. Maybe I will get my copy up and running

If you read the reviews, the second version is superior. However, I have both and would be happy with either as far as performance is concerned. Find a decent copy at a price you can live with then enjoy.

Takumar, you bet. Super Takumar, not necessarily.

The very first Takumar I used was an SMC 55 2.0. Inexpensive, beautiful colours and contrast, and wonderfully soft out of focus areas when wide open. I was using it adapted to a SONY A100. After finding this forum and following the examples posted by such folks as Utak, Mike Cash, and others I started my thrift store searches.

Like Dartmoor Dave, I found that the early un- or low- coated models, particularly the presets yielded some of the more intriguing results.

Perhaps the best argument promoting the Takumar is fun you can have using old technology on modern cameras reasonably inexpensively.

I find this lens to be almost as interesting as the 35 2.3.

You can achieve almost buttery out of focus if there is sufficient distance between the subject and the background. Closing the lens down and you get sharp images with great colour that needs some contrast enhancement in PP.

Open it up, get close, and almost anything can and does happen.

I almost passed this lens up. There was a time around six or seven years ago that I was hunting down Takumars in local thrift stores. This one was on a camera that had a tan ever-ready case and the lens cap was an embossed KODAK aluminum thing. Turned out to be a fairly decent AP that with lens cost something like $40. I burned my fingers buying at that time but not on this one. I have a smile on my face whenever I use it.
