-How would you rate the look overall? I like the look. It's definitely different! It's a 4 for me. -Does the 40mm fit the camera well?
Nosir, I don't like it. It looks cheap. If someone is looking for pocketable, I'll bet they don't get the K-01 with the new 40mm. And if it only works on the K-01, I don't want it. -Are you planning on buying one based on what you've read about it in the official announcement?
A little background info: I'm currently sporting a (used) K-x as my first DSLR. I've acquired a few K-mount lenses (I've only just begun!) My previous camera was a Sony superzoom; it had a wee-tiny EVF, so I shot from the LCD most of the time. The Sony HX1 took better video than the K-x, BTW, and more easily too, which I appreciated.
So all signs point to me being a perfect prospect for the K-01.
...however $750 isn't in the budget at this time, so I'll stick it out and see if the K-r gets a successor. -In buying a camera, how important is the look compared to the features? Very important, somewhat important, or unimportant?
I'll say 'somewhat' here. If it has the features I want, then the look is a nice plus. -How do you think people who've never heard of Pentax would react to this camera?
If they've never heard of Pentax, then they're not camera snobs (who would frown disapprovingly at the K-01). For the uninitiated though, different is good. There are a lot of average-Joe DSLR owners who assume that my K-x is fancier / more expensive than their shiny Cannikon (it must be my lens hood!)

It's not the best pic of the week, but it is iconic and is visually different from the rest of the project (that I fear will grow stale). |

Here's another manual focus shot, this time with the SMC Pentax M 50 f2.0, also probably wide open.

Here's a fun one. Do you think it'd benefit from cropping / straightening?
P.S. That's the "Toy Camera" effect.

This was shot indoors, thus the 1600. I didn't write down the aperture, but it's probably wide open. This shot is SOOC as I'm not currently set up to do post-processing. BTW, this is Catch-in-Focus and metering with the green button. I'm new to dSLR, and I gotta say shooting with old manual glass is really fun on a Pentax! |

Speaking as a beginner myself (less than three weeks behind a dSLR):
1) Because controlling DoF is hard on a P&S and easy on my K-x, EVERY PICTURE MUST HAVE A BLURRED BACKGROUND. I have my excuses (my normal settings are cluttered, I mostly shoot portraits, etc), and I hope to grow as a photographer. Nonetheless, see exhibit A.
2) I had (still have!) elevated expectations of my equipment. I overestimated the capability/ease of dSLR's sharpness, sensitivity, and AF. I wanted perfect AF in low light with no flash! I wanted pixel-peeping sharpness from my kit lens! (I still want these things, BTW.) As it turns out, my "entry level" camera requires lots of practice (which I am enjoying greatly!), and now LBA may be setting in...

Thanks for the link, Marc.
I'm not pixel-peeping; these are look-at-the-LCD-and-hit-delete soft. My success rate is 20% or so.
At 55mm f/5.6 with the subject at 6ft, the DoF is 9.6in. That means if the AF locks onto the eyes or the nose or the mouth or the ear or the hairline etc, the kid's face should be acceptably sharp, no? Additionally, my test subject is often restrained by his highchair.
Upon reflection, the sharp outdoor pics may not have been with the kit lens. I'll have to test more this weekend. Is it possible for the DA L 18-55 to be the source of such inconsistancy?
EDIT:
Just found this on dpreview forums RE: DA L kit 18-55 being soft wide-open on the tele end: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1036&thread=38415631 |

I'm new to dSLR in general and the K-x in specific. I've had terrible luck (softness) shooting my kids with AF using the 18-55 kit lens wide open indoors without a flash under 5-point, central point, or point select. I've tested quite a bit the last two weeks (I'm new; did I mention that?) I don't think it's camera shake as I use SR and shutter 1/30 or faster.
How deep should I expect DoF at 55mm f/5.6? Wider than a kid's head?
P.S. I've had good luck (sharpness) shooting the kids outdoors with AF.C using 5-point, central, and point select.

That is tidy and very informative. As a dSLR noob with two young kids, this is good to know. Thanks!
