How flexible can the DA*300 be? How about going beyond its inherent macroish abilities with the addition of extension tubes? Assuming that the user is completely comfortable with manual focusing at telephoto lengths, what about forgetting the SDM issue with an added TC which is no longer produced, then presumably any TC can be employed. If this is indeed the case then what, in your opinion would be the best optically? including 3rd party.
Is there a way to overcome the SDM issue when using a TC in order to engage screw-drive? Perhaps by disabling certain contacts?

I have been researching the Pentax SMC DA* 300mm f/4 ED [IF] SDM as a possible wildlife lens to use with a K-5. There are only a limited number of reviews of the lens from reputable sources and even fewer with MTF data.
What Im looking for is a reliable comparison of image quality between the DA* 300mm and its Canikon 300/4 peers. I have searched and searched. You can find no end of Canikon comparisons, but nothing Pentax wise. Your help and experiences are greatly appreciated

Hi everyone
I have been absent for a while after been made redundant by the city council. So I went into emergency mode trying to find work. Well, Im still looking, but thought I would try a new direction.
I built my first website, dedicated to photo restoration and retouching. I also added a blog to help those just starting out in that direction. The sites have been up and running for about a week now.
Is it a pipe dream to think I can make some form of steady income from this? I have spent thousands of hours in Photoshop pursuing my passion for photography. I thought, why not use your knowledge of Photoshop to try and make a few dollars.
I would appreciate honest feedback and suggestions from a community I have grown to trust.

Hi everyone, i have just returned from my trip to Samos to find that my AF360 waiting for me and my K10D As soon as i get to the PP of the images i made on my trip ill post some samples, only 4000 to deal with, will i ever see daylight again?
Well i have read the manual and played with the AF360 today. My primary interest is with the wireless P-ttl and have to say, i think everything functions as it should My questions.
Whilst in wireless P-ttl mode is the A zoom setting an option or must i stick with the M zoom setting?
Will the camera or flash in some way indicate that enough light will/will not be available for the shot?
I cannot seem to get the HS mode to work in wireless P-ttl, I cant pass 1/180 with M mode set on the K10D. Even if i set the Shutter speed beyond 1/180 when the shutter is pressed the lcd indicates the shot was taken at 1/180.
Hope you can clear these points up for me.

your advice and suggestions. Sorry this reply is so late, preparation for the trip and the lack of net access has slowed me down a bit. Which isnt such a bad thing in this hectic world.
I picked up a CP yesterday from a dealer in Samos and i have to say WOW Peter, thanks for the pointer. Im shooting RAW exclusivly and tripod every image. I had some very interesting results using the little mentioned multiexposure feature on the K10. There is a windfarm high on a mountain and the feature captures the motion in the blades very effectivly. Its also very useful for moving water in daylight.
Well ill post a few results on my return next week

Returning to my original post i wonder if anyone sees the wisdom in using bracketing in M mode? I mean, with the variation in DOF, and blending in CS3, isnt this the same idea as focus stacking? I cannot verify myself as i dont have access to a PC or Mac on the island.

Net here on samos island, hence the delay with replies. Sorry guys. thanks for your informative replies. However the questiom of whether this is normal behavior in m mode still stands? If so then what is the possible scenario for its use. Sorry for errors, this is first time using net on my phone. Its tiresome. Thanks for the help everyone. Peter

Still, the mystery remains. Why bracket apeture in M mode? Could this be helpfull when it comes to blending images? Perhaps giving excellent DOF for landscapes.
Has anyone tried this? What were your results?

Hi everyone
I have been trying to use the bracketing feature on the K10 in manual mode, however, not only is it changing shutter speed but F. stop as well, messing up DOF. Is this correct?
Should i change something in settings or how should i overcome this issue.

However, im looking for a more practical approach. I am leaving for the island of Samos in Greece on Sunday where I plan to undertake a three week project based on the theme of disapearing world. This will be my first attempt at trying to capture images of a high standard. I have spent years capturing without a particualr goal in mind, for my own viewing pleasure if you kike.
The days are usually clear skys, full on sun. Excluding sunrise, sunset what will be the optimum temperature for that particuar set of circumstances?

The light temperature scale on p128 shows Daylight at around 5200k and Clear sky at 10000k.
Maybe im stupid which is a distinct possability, but arent these two the same thing? If so, why have they been assigned differing values and under what circumstances would they be used.

You are right the 18-50 is a solid choice. As far as Pentax anything at the service center goes, its a no no. This is a seven week saga already and im sure they would have pulled out any Pentax bodies or Sigma pk AF lenses long ago. Jees, it just shows you how biased this industry is toward Canon and Nikon.

Well everyone, im a Pentax Fan!
I owned the 100d Super and was so impressed i soon moved up to the K10D. With my K10 purchase i also took a Sigma 24-70 and the 70mm macro. I kept my kit 50-200 from my K100 Super purchase.
From day one i had AF issues with both the Sigmas and no probs with the pentax on the new body. I happen to be lucky in that the Sigma service centre is in my area so very close to home.
I took in the 24-70, they adjusted and reported fixed. Get home still 12mm FF. Returned and they dicovered something the guy claims they have never seen with a Sigma lens before.
The AF changes from a FF issue at F2.8 to BF issue at F11. Both the service guys are dumbfounded. They ordered a new CPU. After adjustments the same problem continues.
I have been present during these attempts to fix the problems and have watched with keen interest. The solution now is that they have asked me if im prepared to exchange the lens for another, however there are no copies of the 24-70 in the country and they expect non for a while. So i have opted for the Sigma 18-50 2.8 ex hsm.
The service guys say that it could be that because both the Sigmas are designed for a FF sensor and the AF problem could lie there.
Thai is what worries me, i have to go again tomorrow morning to get the 18-50, and they told me to bring the 10D so they can calibrate the lens. They say they think the problems will vanish with the 18-50 because its a DC lens. BUT, what if it does not go away! Thay are going to blame the 10D for the AF issues. But i know its not the body because the Pentax 50-200 has no issues on the K10.
What do you think? Is it the K10 Or Sigma? If they decide its the K10 what can i say in its defence? Should i get hard line with the guys if they try and go that way?

Hi all
I have been using Photoshop for 5 years and feel confident in its use, however, and you may think this is a little strange, I have never understood stacking order.
I some how just fell into the habit of applyng a layer and flattening. Now i really want to get over this hurdle so that i can save important images unflattened for further re-adjustment later.
I have browsed the web for two days and found nothing that helps me. The crux of the issue is that i get to a point where i have applied maybe three adjustment layers and then aaply say a sharpening layer only to find i cannot see its effect on the image due to its order in the stack. This is what i reall need help with.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I went feet first and bought the Sigma 24-70 ex and proud of the monster, indeed i am. However imagine how whacked i was when i discovered it had a serious FF issue, 14mm to be exact according to the Sigma guy at the service centre here in Finland.
What worries me is he had a pile of high-tech gadgetry and all he did was take a few images with the lens and said that in three weeks to a month there will be a re-programmed chip in the post and he will install it same day. But how reliable is this likely to be? I mean i dont want to find the new chip has issues and wait another month.
Another thing i noticed was that whilst he had the gear mounted on a tripod he also had SR swiched on, isnt that going to have a negative affect on the images he has sent to Japan?
Anyone got experience in this area, something reasureing PLEASE.

I too was tired of getting it wrong so i went and started practicing the zone system. It takes plenty of practice but offers you total control over the outcome. You can find a primer here.
A simplified zone system for making good exposures
Forgot to add the digital mantra: Meter for the midtones and check your highlights. Have fun

Here is a capture from ACR showing a shot i took at the weekend using the gray card to gauge exposure so as to batch process in ACR. From what i can gather from the point sample readings there is a definate red cast here.
Can this be fixed in camera? If not how would i go about correcting this in ACR to complete my batch with confidence.
Your help and advice would be much appreciated
