Hi Allan !... How are you, Mr Cobbu2 ? ;)
2021, Nov 29 : a day to forget... the day when I lost my Home... I'm seriously missing Astro-Photography...

.
Good news for us and Pentax too... It's better late than never !

---
I'm now trying to gather all the useful informations about this Pentax " King-Five " that I kept all along these years...
of shooting, discarding the worst shots, stacking the keepers and then post-processing the final images...

you who want to know why this K-5 APSc DSLR has stil such an Excellent Image Quality...
especially in High Contrast and (Very) Low Light conditions, please go there :

Nice Sky photographs, gifthorse :)

That's 2 very interesting ideas !

Especially if Pentax drops its " accelerator unit " ; please, no more NR baked in Raw files !

I was posting about Monochrome Sensors on that thread :
From RGB to Mono, by how much is the IQ improved ? I-R Test Simulation

with 2 Simulations of what could be the Image Quality of a Mono-APSC :
From RGB to Mono, by how much is the IQ improved ? DPR Test Simulation

Both Tests Simulations are Full-Sized.

Let's hope they will achieve at least 1 of these 2 ideas ?

wait & see... ;)

A few satellites Astrophotography Talk Forum Digital Photography Review

I can compare dozens of measurements... the Pentax K-5 is still...
... the Absolute Master of Astro-Photography and Long Exposures in very Low Light :
Best Cameras for Astro Photography, Long Exposures in Low light

I'll try a used Nikon D7500 one day, but it's more a High-ISO & Short-Exposure camera than the K-5
- and Shorter Exposures at Higher-ISO mean much more Noise in each sub-frame...
... so you'll need Stacking much more subs with Dark-Frames !

The Pentax K-5 also benefits from an exceptionnally low Dark-Current level :
Best Cams 4 Long Exposures in Low light, Astro Photography#K5=LowestDarkCurrentLevel
I never hesitated to go until 16 minutes Long Expos. to get Clean PEFs

Remember it was the first camera (+ the Nikon D7k) with the new Sony Exmor Sensor inside :
Best Cams 4 Astro Photography, Long Exposures in Low light#ConversionNoise
and thus, the Lowest Conversion Noise level of that time !

Even compared to the High-End most expensive FF cameras around years 2008-2012 :
Best Cams 4 Long Exposures in Low light, Astro Photography#K5=DR-Master
2010 Pentax K-5 is still the Champion of the Dynamic Range !

/!\ you have to compare in Screen Mode : your Favorite Telescope will Not...
give you a wider on-sensor image of the DSO you're shooting !

And now that one can find used Pentax K-5 for $250€ or less
... everybody could shoot Astrophotography ;)

The ASI071 imx071 camera is still priced at $1500€...
with a not useless... but Not Mandatory Cooling !

Enjoy that Pentax K-5 ! :)

I like the Red too ! Especially with its highlighted stars that I didn't get on the Pink one...
but, the only way to improve the Perceived Contrast is to add more Blue & Green to the Red, hence the Pink !
Many Thanks for appreciating !

A successful first attempt, Bravo !

Love the inimitable rendering of the sky with the Pentax 6x7 and the Fujichrome film :
- Angel Terrace, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone & Grand Teton 4/21, yer Album.
.

Hi all ! ;)

More Easy & Efficient than editing autosave.tif in L*a*b mode ?

I am now testing a new way to boost Pentax K5's performance at base ISO-80 :
- 8 RGB .PEF files stacked through DSS to a Color picture as usual
- 1/ these Raw files are exported one color plane at a time, each to a B&W .fits or .tiff file -or-
.. 2/ these Raw files are converted to B&W .fits / .tiff files (1/ to Super-Pixel 2/ to match Bilinear Color stack)
- the best B&W results from these are stacked
- result's levels are pushed to make a High Contrast B&W mask
- the Color picture and the High Contrast B&W mask are blended together in Elements, Gimp, Photoshop, etc.
- you can even try several ways to blend them together thus getting the best result to your taste...

Here is my 1st " Pink prototype picture " using this process :
it is the Rosette Nebula from 8 .PEF files, each is a ~15 minutes long exposure...
... resulting in a Second place in DPR's Challenge named "Edited.." :
Rosette, Ngc-2237 nebula, 2nd place in "Edited" Challenge of DPReview

RosetteMCCou60.jpg - Right Click, View image :
.

.

Now let's Compare this to the original picture, a simple stack from 6 .PEF files in 2015 :
https://g3.img-dpreview.com/2364ADE4B8904B8197CD1BD7DAB375DE.jpg
... the 2 Raw files added to get the picture above are not the best !

And my 2nd " Red prototype picture " using this new process :
= the Rosette Nebula from 7 .PEF files, each is a ~15 minutes long exposure...
blended in another way w/ its High Contrast mask

Which one do you prefer, the "Pink" or the "Red Rosette" ?

Accelerator unit struggling at high ISO and mid-power battery?

@bdery, apologies for this off-topic post...

.
Hi MJKoski ! ;)

Accelerator Unit Active w/ Long Exposures at ISO100 : are you absolutely certain of that ?
... Could you Clearly proove that ?... From your own Raw files ?
That would be a Very Usefull Knowledge...

It's important because it would mean there is No Solution for Astrophotography w/o Smoothing out faintest stars
- ISO > 639 and Short Exposures = Raw-NR / Smoothing
- but, at Base ISO-100 and Long Exposures = Pentax Raw-NR / Smoothing too !

It's not only a limitation for the K1-Mk2, native or rebuilt...
... it's a limitation for the new K3-Mk3 too !

the first Words of DPReview's Presentation were the K3-Mk3 had the imx571 BSI sensor, and...
- at the same time - the K3-Mk3 had the Accelerator Unit too !?!?

After reading this, I made the following remark to DPR's staff :
Pentax K-3 Mark III initial review: Digital Photography Review
the imx571 featuring the Dual Gain Mode doesn't need any Accelarator Unit to bump up its DR curve at ~ISO-640 !
For instance: Canon Eos R5 Stops Raw-NR at the ~ISO-setting Pentax K1 II Starts it :
Photographic Dynamic Range versus ISO Setting

As a result of which, they withdrew the - imx571 BSI Sensor - statement from their Presentation...
I strongly hope the K3-Mk3 will escape this Accelerator Unit that allows Pentax to only
imitate New BSI Sensors with old sensors : K-5, last Pentax DSLR that got the Best Sensor at its time !

I need a Pentax K-3-Mk3 as Excellent as the K-5 was 11 years ago :
5500 light years : Rosette, the Stellar Nursery ! : Digital Photography Review
shot from a Bortle-9 city at sea-level with a Stock K-5

So, is Accelerator Unit also Active during Long Exposures at ISO100 ?
- to be continued in another thread ?...
thanks to MJKoski...

Hi All ! ;)

I've tried several times to put a link in the comments of that Good Article :
The Fundamentals of Exposure - Introduction - In-Depth Articles
... Article wich contains almost Everything about Exposure...
Everything except a LV Calculator like this :
Camera Simulator, Exposure Calculator, Light Value -49 to 69 Ev.
to Calculate, Manipulate and Play with : Aperture, Shutter-Speed, ISO, Light Value...

it's still not allowed at all :
" Your comments cannot contain URLs. Please remove any links and re-submit your comment."

So now, there is at least a link here - in the LV Calculator's thread - to that Useful Article :

the latter - Exposure Settings - containing several examples to verify here :

Sorry, I just forgot 5 words here :
.

.
The Closer to Base-ISO 80, the More it's True...

.
I think I understand where the Noise comes from :

F/2 is Good, it's the aperture I would have choosen too...
ISO 400 is Good too... I think you can go until 800...
3/5 sec. is way Too Short Exposure given the 3 other Parameters

Camera Simulator, Exposure Calculator, Light Value -49 to 69 Ev.

Please go to this page... then select 1/3 Ev Steps...
then select 02 Ev Dark Streets at Night, Dark indoor...
then select F/2... then select ISO 400... then select 1/1.6 sec.~3/5
then click on CalcSLV = Compute Scene Light Value an you get 0.7 Ev !

The whole Range of my Astro-Photos is within - 3.5 Ev down to - 6 Ev !
Photos tagged with "nx-mini": Galleries: Digital Photography Review
Photos tagged with "iso-80": Galleries: Digital Photography Review

I would have choosen at least 2 to 4 sec. for the Exposure duration :
4 sec at ISO 800 at F/2 click CalcSLV that gives - 3 Ev !
given the downsizing you applied to your pic.

.
So this was shot within the Hottest and shortest Nights ?

What was the " Camera Temperature " recorded in Exif Datas ?
if ExifTool is on your PC, the Command Line is :

" Exiftool -T -FileName -T -CameraTemperature *.PEF "

Thanks DrMindbender ;)

Wow ! Congrats for that Huge Job, DrMindbender !
- At which F/ - ISO - SS were they shot ?

If ISO-setting was just a Preset...
... I would suggest you to re-build this stack at lower ISO-setting...
I bet you would get less noise in the final picture...

I think the K-5 is at it's best at ISO~800...
... many users say beyond that, its just Digital Gain...
so it's better applying the Digital Gain by yourself, after stacking ?

ie: when the SNR is Maximised ?
Don't you think so ?

K5s don't fear Under-Exposure at all :

-1) Clever Livings that are Not Aggressive : like peaceful whales on a planet covered with oceans...

Here is a Very Interesting Bronica Accessory for the GS-1 that could solve the dilemna...

There is also an AE Rotary Finder G to hold the GS-1 to one's chest as a TLR :

Hi Angelic ! :)

Before buying a Pentax 6x7 in '81, I bought a Mamiya C220f with 3 lenses...
... But, they were So Soft, especially the 135 mm, that I brought it Back to the shop !
I traded it for a Pentax 6x7 with a 90 and a 150mm, both F/2,8
= Fantastic Colors and Contrast and Sharpness !!!
SMC-Pentax-67-TelePhoto-Prime-Lenses
SMC-Pentax-67-Normal-Primes

The only Limiting Specification of the Pentax 6x7 was its Slow 1/30s Flash Sync...
... So I searched for a ~similar Camera~ with Very Good Lenses...
but especially a Fast Flash Sync Speed, 1/500s ?

This is how I found the Bronica GS-1 : a Modern and Versatile Camera !
- its Excellent Lenses are said to be from Nikon Designers :
google.com/search?q=Bronica+GS-1+system
you just have to Swap 2 wires in the Speed-Grip to use all Nikon SB-Flash in Computer Mode

The GS-1 is not that much bigger than the SQ-A...
... and the SQ-A is not that much cheaper than the GS-1...
Bronica GS-1 versus SQ-A - Google Search

Just an annoyance... maybe...
I won't sell mine !

Hi All at metabones ! ;)

My question is about the Q666 Adapter for Pentax Q, Q7, Q10, Qs1 :
does the Q666 have a - Leaf Shutter inside it ?

If this Q666 does have a - Leaf Shutter inside it, it's Very interesting for Astro :
my ~5600 mm F5 (~$200 1000 mm Newtonian) becomes a ~2800 mm F/2.5 !
allowing me to bypass the Sensor 30 sec. limitation by getting 4 times the light.
( I strongly hope so... )

If it doen't have a Leaf Shutter, the limitation is worse, it is down to 2 sec.,
making the Q666 of No interest at all for AstroPhoto. ! Here is why:

Camera Simulator, Exposure Calculator, Light Value -49 to 69 Ev.

Last spring...
I added three Control-Dials and one Lighting-Dimmer pictures
to say the most with the fewest words.

These days...
I added a link to the Fantastic Job done by Wayne Fulton :
- he filled the whole list from Precise Values to Nominal Values
for Shutter-Speeds, F/stops and ISO values...
= in Full, Half, Third, Third+Half, Sixth, Tenth stops...
with up to Nine Significant Digits !
Thanks to Wayne Fulton
.
On page How To :
Left / right key : Decrease / Increase Aperture, Shutter-Speed, ISO, SLV - Numbers
– / + : Decrease / Increase - amount of Light on sensor and/or image Brightness
Calc(ulate) : Aperture, ShutterSpeed, ISO, SLV from the 3 other values
3 Ev Steps: 1, 1/3, 1/6 - 12 Scenes: Light Value –6 Ev to 16 Ev
for 1/2 Ev increment, shift 3/6 Ev equivalent increment
This won't run w/o a Full JavaScript Browser
from Precise-Values to Nominal ones

Now, if you find this last 6x10 min. version a little too much...
I recently built a 3x10 min. M45 with far less noise than the older version
here is this 3 Exposures of 615 sec. each at ISO 80 with the K-5 :
.

.

A much larger M-45 picture, 2296 × 1504 is pixel-peepable here :

... or with the Datas here :

.

It just sits between the first Noisy 3x10 min. version :

... and the last Electric Blue 6x10 min. version :

Another set of 6 .PEF files I had some time to Rebuid from start...
are the 6 Exposures of 630 sec. each at ISO-80 from M-45 with the Pentax K-5
- the first version was made from 3 .PEFs only :

The fact that I erased my SD-Card between the 2 nights has resulted in Double-Crossed Stars...
I couldn't restore the Exact Camera Position on my S-W 200/1000
= No Special Effect Filters were used !

Colors, Noise wise, the last 6 .PEFs version is far better :
