Recently got the K-3 Prestige. This was from the first outing with it, still learning it and the new 18-135mm. The focus challenge for this shot was getting through the fence...

I started taking photos with much ...shall we say, less exotic...equipment. The K-r is my first SLR and has so many more fun controls and tweaks.
I became decent at fighting for some effects on a prosumer point-and-shoot. I haven't mastered the balancing act that the DSLR gives me. I didn't even think about bumping up the shutter speed, I've just gotten used to holding still!

Thanks all.
To answer another question (posted in the gallery with the photo, but still) the shot was handheld. ISO was 3200, F5.6, shutter was 1/40. Very slight crop on the photo.
The depth of field was a bit tough to get just right. I seem to struggle a bit with the K-r saying it's focused (nice little red beeping box) but the focus is _just_ off a bit like on this photo.

It's a manual focus lens, so it was my "best tweak" on the ring as I was handholding. ;)

Having worked with different cameras, both film and digital, for over 20 years, I personally really liked the K-r - comes with the lithium battery and can use AA's.
I've been places and had the photo batteries in the film camera die - and the town was too small to have any in stock anywhere.
Or, I have taken the camera camping and can't recharge batteries easily, but the "trading post" has AA's.
I've had situations where it would just have been nice to have that contingency plan to fall back on.
Right now, I love the fact that I have the proprietary lithium and the adapter for AA's - which gives me all kinds of flexibility to keep my camera powered now and in the future.

I posted 4 pictures of my early experimenting in my welcome thread post.

Hello,
I've been lurking around this site for a couple of weeks, about time to do the introduction...
I recently acquired my first dSLR, the Pentax K-r with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses.
I've been shooting for a lot of years, starting with 35mm film in high school (late 80's); migrated to digital as the quality improved, and just made the leap to the more 'pro' circuit.
The first day I took the dSLR out for a field trip, I had several moments of great frustration and desire to send the camera back - until I got some good shots. I realized later what some of my issues were (AF doesn't work through glass well, even says so in the book...:o)
I really appreciate this forum, it's been helping me with the newbie to dSLR learning curves!
