I think there is a "warm" CF but for the last 10 years or more of CF use in Australia I can't recall using one. When CF's started to come in it took ages to get used to the cooler colour but now it's just "normal".
The US might have a preference for those warmer CF's given Tungsten is sill in widespread use - I have no idea what you have available.

FF under Tungsten light is the issue with some k-r's. Being in Sydney you are highly unlikely to come across Tungsten lighting with general use. If you do then LiveView is ok and some get better results setting white balaqnce to Tungsten. Your initial unit obviously had a bigger issue.

Great shots. They are all really phallic. Was it a phallic challenge or did they just turn out that way?

Definitely! Some advice on Drop Bears from Frequently asked questions about Australia, and not so frequently asked questions

"Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Australia, but I forget its name. It's a kind of bear and lives in trees. (USA)
A: It's called a Drop Bear. They are so called because they drop out of gum trees and eat the brains of anyone walking underneath them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking."

Oh, and just in case you are thinking of seeing the Hippo races or the Vienna Boys Choir while you are here (from the same FAQ):
"Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Australia? (USA)
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Aus-tra-lia is that big island in the middle of the pacific which does not... oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Kings Cross. Come naked."
"Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Kings Cross, straight after the hippo races. Come naked."

I don't think you can lift now can you? I think you can just support a player at the top of a jump but might be wrong.

I've never been there but since you will be in Cairns Hartley's Crocodile Adventures looks good Hartleys Crocodile Adventures - Cairns crocodile and wildlife park, crocodile cruises, animal displays and wildlife shows About 45 min north of Cairns.
Fort Denison (Pinchgut) in Sydney is ok and might get you a different perspective on Sydney harbour Fort Denison on Sydney Harbour & near Sydney Opera House - sydney.com.au . Of course, you need to just jump on a Manly Ferry and take a trip across the harbour or consider a Harbour Cruise (Ferry is cheaper).
Take a wander around The Rocks or maybe do a walking tour and grab some info The Rocks Walking Tours: Historic Sydney Walking Tours
Blue Mountains is something to consider if you want to get out of Sydney a bit Blue Mountains : Jenolan Caves : Blackheath : Three Sisters : Zig Zag Railway : Mount Tomah : NSW : sydney.com.au
Both Cairns and Sydney have Hot Air Ballon trips.
I'd also consider a day trip up to the Hunter Valley Vineyards. There should be a number of tours but if you hire a car remember to keep on the right (left) side of the road.

Those are excellent shots. Was any post colour correction done? The light seems fairly cool so I'd definitely send the k-r in with the lens you usually use. Put it this way, there's nothing to lose by sending it in except some time.

I don't deny that the problem does exist for some users but I also think there are units that simply require calibration. For that reason I think it is best to determine if the problem is specific to Tungsten light or not. For me it is not an issue because I don't come across Tungsten light and have no FF that I have experienced yet.

If you don't have that red tinge in the photos with auto white balance but have the FF issue I'd suggest it might be more than the acknowledged Tungsten FF issue and the camera might need calibrating. The auto white balance defaults to "subtle" correction under Tungsten and still leaves a slight red tinge. In Canada you possibly have Tungsten indoors but I don't know about the street lamps. Controlled testing with lamps might clarify it.

Great photos keep on coming.
The only criticism I have is photos posted straight after each other without a gap. It makes them look like they are joined in a single photo and is a little distracting.
EXIF info would be great too. Resize before you post and the EXIF should appear as long as the software you use to resize doesn't mess with it. PDCU4 will resize and retain the EXIF.

Formula 1 to return to the US in 2012... in TEXAS!?

"old hat"? What a strange term to use. Is supporting the future of motorsport in general "old hat"? I've been on enough comitees and boards trying to get categories moving forward with new ideas and have never been referred to as "old hat"
What specifically is irrelevant and old hat?

So, if the category is doing so well why can't they alone support a race in Tasmania? NASR has 3 rounds of the NSSS scheduled for Tasmania this year. They certainly don't have the same revenue as V8SC but still have contracted drivers and the problems of getting them and their cars across Bass Strait. If the category is doing so well why is the Facebook page filled with disillusioned fans? It does well from a financlial perspective but the fanbase from those who actually follow and support motorsport is diminishing in favour of fanboys and partygirls.
Texas is another example of WHY the category is losing support. I really don't care if that one single race takes off or not. I doubt it will. I'll watch it but cannot support it. To even consider supporting Texas when conventional local tracks are suffering shows absolutely no loyalty to the sport at all and no wisdom in looking forward. You clean up your own backyard first! Where do you expect our next generation of drivers to come from if they don't have tracks to compete on more than once per year or need to travel interstate to get to one?
FACT: NASCAR is huge in the US. V8SC won't come close to filling the stands for even just one race. Their only hope is as a support race which is possibly what they will do. I mean like get with it! They run a tiny little 302 cast iron block engine in a country where 360 is entry or restricted level. The racing is, at best, processional. The main interest is from tactics. You bump another car and you get a penalty where in NASCAR it is mostly sorted on the track. It's expensive because it has stayed stuck with old ways and is dominated by a few teams with the money to put the time into data aquisition and analysis and what development there is left in those old tanks. There is a vocal minority against NASCAR in the US but NASCAR(and dirt track to some extent) is where it is at.
FACT: Similar styles of racing already exist in the US. They just don't get the same support that NASCAR does.
FACT: I agree that Cocharne has done a good job of getting new faces to tracks and in regions where there are no permanent tracks. You simply don't know my personal opinion of him and that doesn't matter. Take a look at another Aussie company being sold overseas.

Knock Knock! What makes them any better or different from what they already have? Be REAL. All about Texas is an ego trip and a cash grab. It's nothing about the sport.

Cochrane is doing a great job of filling his own pockets and those of his mates then tossing the blame at the State governments. Even now I see him on BigPondTV blaming the Tasmanian Government after just signing a huge deal for TV rights along with the Texas deal. THAT money needs to be put back into the sport. If he can't get sufficient sponsorship to race there then he needs a new job. Since when did you need backing from a State Gov to run a motor race? Since Cochrane came to power!

Yeah and I can remember when you didn't even need a round of the ATCC to have totally packed crowds at Amaroo. The AMSCAR series could stand on its own and is where many of the current team owners had their start. It's that sort of basis that made the category. Something which Cochrane seems to easily forget.
Why would the US take to a category such as V8SC when they hardly get a seat at their Grand Am meetings? That's a fantastic category.
All this time I'm replying Cochrane is still babbling about his exports such as the US, India, Singapore ... Not one single mention of the local tracks. I was warned about his attitude by someone who headed his marketing years ago.

Well I've followed motorsport in Australia since before we had GTHO's at Bathurst and when F5000's were our top open wheel category and we had FJ Holdens on the Speedway tracks. But I'll follow it all and have been involved in much of it.
We have much more than just V8 Supercars. F3 is emerging and will run at Bathurst. The APCC has a new European based advertising agency. GT's are returning to Bathurst. V8 Dirt Modifieds are on the rise. Our sprintcar drivers compete well in the US and we have drivers in LM's in the US but still can't decide on what regs we'll have for our top tier speedway sedans.
Texas for the V8's is about the revenue from broadcast rights for the series and an ego trip. That will have limited but vocal support. It's ironic they will race at a newly built circuit while there are existing circuits. I'm against it unless it *really* is an expansion and we support races at Symmonds Plains and Eastern Creek and the revenue is put back into the sport. Tracks like Amaroo and Oran Park and the like are where the category had its roots and we won't have any new drivers or any grass roots racing unless we support our local tracks first.

There isn't really at all. They are, like you say, a "Formula" car and they will be even more. If you want Production Car racing then follow the APCC.

In addition to what others have suggested Portrait mode wasn't a really good idea. You are bit far away from the family for it to be a "portrait". Did you choose portrait mode or have it on auto and it was chosen by he camera? Probably didn't make too much of a difference.

This was specifically enacted around Sydney Harbour by separate legislation so I don't think any general rules could be applied.
If the OP's case was in Australia then they might have been able to disallow photography while he was on the site since the site was leased and under the control of the those that leased it. Even though it was public land it would have ceased to be public space. The direction would have had to come from those that controlled the site or their representative though. The US might be different because of constitutional rights and precedents set by those rights.

I'm wondering how this will effect the local distributors. In Australia, as an example, CR Kennedy are the distributors and control the "Pentax Australia" site while not being Pentax themselves.
Ricoh have a dedicated Ricoh Australia presence and office.

That's correct but the difference is for Public Space and not Public Property. Public Property can be Public Space or not. Private property can't be public space.
It can change too. An example is public roads closed off for a street circuit road race. As soon as they put those barricades up and restrict access to ticket holders it is no longer Public Space. In Victoria in Australia the fact that metro train stations are under private control means they aren't considered Public Space and they can ban photography and do (although permits can be obtained). In NSW in Australia even though you need to buy a ticket to access the train station platforms they are considered as semi-Public Space and non-commercial photos can be taken without a permit. So, the definition can be a little fuzzy.

In this case, the photographer was well within his rights and it amounted to bored cops who could have been out actually doing something constructive instead of going on an ego trip.
