Aperture Raw and Jpeg, confused please help

Thank you so much you guys, I really am understanding jpg vs raw better. Normhead, I especially appreciated that excerpt, thank you. While I am understanding the files, I'm still confused a bit on how I should be processing my raw images.

So when I'm uploading my pictures...I and first see the image real flat and lifeless, then after it's done uploading all the way it has a lot of pop to it. I'm guessing from what you said that it is translating the in camera settings for jpeg and using them in the raw picture, but with the ability to edit it more fully than a jpeg. (Aperture 3 is a RAW editor and PP editor, right?) If this is accurate then I really don't see why shooting jpeg would be too much of an advantage besides the space on the card or being able to shoot in burst faster. So, even though it does save this data and applies it to the raw file as I upload it into aperture 3, I still need to sharpen it as well, right?

I'm SO sorry if I'm asking the same question again after you have answered, I'm wanting to make sure I didn't misunderstand.

Edited to add: just tried RAW+ and the jpegs look like the "flat lifeless" image I had described that it looks like before loading. The RAW images after loaded are much more colorful and with more contrast. This is not what I expected. The black point, histogram, and white balance are different in the adjustments panel and I didn't even know about "raw fine tuning" before. Didn't really every know until just now about the "custom image" setting in my k-x which was set to "muted" I'm sure this is why it looked so flat and blah.

Which leads me to another question: if the raw file that I'm editing already has adjustments on it and they are different than the jpeg ones, what is telling it to have those specific adjustments?

So I'm hoping you guys can help me understand. I've read that RAW images are not compressed and need sharpening with every photo. I think I read something about someone preferring to shoot in jpeg, because they said something like why spend all that time setting my in camera settings to get the image exactly the way I want it in camera, only to have that not preserved because I shot Raw. K, so that's where I'm confused majorly. I've been shooting in Raw and then as I upload to Apple's Aperture 3 I see a very flat image at first, it says "processing" then I see a very nice image that isn't so flat and has nice color to it after it has completely loaded. What is happening? Can someone explain the process? Isn't this the camera information/settings loading onto my raw image? And why would it look better on a jpeg? Maybe I need to shoot in combo mode and compare to really understand.

I would really like to be a birth photographer. The lighting in these situations is really dark. I also like doing in home portrait sessions with natural light. Also, I heard the 5dmkII has focusing issues....hmmm

I really don't need one now...I'm just wondering if some day I will really want one and have to sell all my pentax gear to switch brands. That would be expensive and more difficult than building up a lens kit now that would be compatible with the future camera "of my dreams". But I may never want one, who knows.

Kids, birth, homes, natural light....fast moving and low light, so maybe that's why all the photogs I follow use them. What do you mean a K-5 can't do anything a FF can't do? Doesn't "easier on you" mean more better pictures because you aren't struggling to see what is being captured through the view finder? (not arguing, just learning and curious, FYI) I know the thing I need the MOST right now is practice, I'm just wanting to plan most efficiently for the future. I probly should rent one some time.

PS thanks for helping me understand the advantages etc.

I use single point focus and choose the point since I often use very shallow DOF. Recomposing doesn't work so well with most of my subjects (kids!).

So about FF. I have never handled a FF. I am recently getting really obsessed with photography and want to become a professional portrait photographer (doing environmental portraits), but it seems all the photographers whose work I admire use a Nikon D700 or a Canon DmkII (usually the later) I honestly can't tell a dif in IQ of a mk II compared to a D7, but I don't have a trained eye and I'm not blowing it up just viewing on screen. I figure it's the DOF capabilities that they would want a FF for, right? I really am not sure WHY, just that I want to be like them and that's what they use, hahaha. I wouldn't buy one right away obviously with such little knowledge and experience, but I wondered if switching to Cannon or Nikon would be better for me if that's what I would eventually want (and I dont know if it is?) Do you get my train of thought?

If i buy a tamron lens from prodigital it comes with a canadian warranty. Does that mean that living in the US it would not work for me?

Honestly I am just starting to think about this and haven't done my research, but I have the k-x right now. It's hard to see through the view finder, and the focus points take to long to toggle through. It would be nice to be able to see the focus points show in screen so that I can quickly change them without having to look down at my screen. Also so that I can be sure of my focus since it is so hard for me to see through the tiny viewfinder and be able to tell for sure if it got exactly the right spot focused.

This is probly a hashed question, but when I searched the question only seemed to be asked years ago....Does Pentax plan to make a full frame camera? (please don't start a debate on FF or bash me for even considering wanting one.... I just want to know if there is speculation that they would be making one?)

Macro lens for other uses?

I've had people suggest to me the tamron 28-75 lens for portraits. while looking for one it sometimes has macro listed in the title and sometimes it doesn't. I'm assuming it's the same lens, do any of you know? There is only one of that focal length listed in the reviews, that's why I'm assuming it is the same lens. ???

lifestyle portraits: what gear should I get?

Hey Pentaxians. I hope I can get a little advice. I posted this in another forum where I got lots of advice on my original question but it died after I wrote my thoughts on options for me. Background: I'm wanting to start a portrait business (ideally by next spring) and need to practice/build portfolio with subjects. I'd like to specialize in kids and babies...lifestyle photography...no in studio type stuff. I love a shallow DOF, and bright airy photos. I intend to be shooting in families homes and outside. I know I'm going to need A LOT OF THINGS, but right now I have around 300 dollars to spend for this month. I have: FA50mm f1.4, DA18-55mm f3.5-5.6, K-x, tripod, fast 8g card. What do you suggest I should get right away?

Here's my thoughts on options: (mind you I really need to do some major research on lighting)

-sell my FA50 1.4, get a tamron 28-75 f2.8, spend about $200-300 on lighting
-sell my FA50 1.4, get the tamron and an old A 50mm to mostly use on babies indoors, and spend about 100-200 on lighting
-keep my FA 50 1.4, also get the Tamron, spend around 50-75 on lighting
-don't get the tamron, stick with my 50 and 18-55 kit lens for all work, and spend about $300 on lighting
-keep my 50, get a longer telephoto prime (maybe the FA100 2.8? or 135 2.8) , and a reflector
-don't buy anything (except maybe a reflector)...save up and get a DA* 50-235 2.8

pentax lenses on other cameras?

Can pentax lenses be used on other cameras? My sister in law has a cannon and was going to sell it really cheaply to my husband. It would be nice if he could use my lenses. Is there an adaptor or something that one could use? does it lower IQ to use an adapter?
Mine is a K-x and this other cannon is a rebel.

I guess I'm wondering now with my inended style of portraits if a studio light pack would do me well? Do many of you use them outdoors, or do you usually use your reflectors and flash outdoors?

Thank you guys SO SO so much for your advice. Just a few replies to clear up my intentions and situation:

Yes I know. That's just how much I've been given right now, and wondered what I should be looking into getting very first while I build a portfolio.

I'm a "she" hehe....and I also have the kit lens DA 18-55.

Not only becuase it's cheap but because I love the look of outdoor portrait I did intend to start this way, doing outdoor photos. Of course baby pictures would needs be indoors a lot though, and I prefer to use wide apertures and shallow DOF having a more "natural" background. And I also think more natural looking "lifesyle" or "environmental" photo's are a bit my style (like kids playing in their bedroom...family in front of their house...see Amy Wenzel's portfolio for examples) Although I do realize I don't have enough experience to know my for sure "style" this is my intention.

I'm in North Salt Lake! My grandparnet's-in-law live down in St George, it's lovely. Hope I get a chance to visit there soon, I'm sure it's getting pretty HOT.

Thank you guys so much for your advice. I think I definately need to get one of those DVD's and learn more about lighting.

My goal is to try to open a small portrait business in about a year. I would like to do family, kid and senior portraits. (No studio) I need to practice a ton and build a portfolio still. I have a LOT to learn about the business side too. I'm just wondering what to spend my money on at this point. I have a Kx and plan to use that for the first while of my business until I make enough profit to get a better camera (probly a k-5) I have the kit lens and the FA50 f1.4. I've been given some money (300) from my parents to help me in my goal. Do you think I should spend it on a new lens, or would spending it on other things be more beneficial right now? I don't have any lights or reflectors or really anything but my tripod, 2 lenses, fast 8g card, camera bag, and camera. Suggestions?

Also, any suggestions on books or websites dedicated to starting this kind of business?

I cannot see the same effect through my viewfinder as I do on my lcd screen or computer screen. If I have a shallow DOF it doesn't seem even close to as shallow as it is when looking through the viewfinder. This is one of the reasons I find it hard to focus when using shallow DOF. Is it just me???

how far would you have to stand from someone with that 135mm to get a head and shoulder shot like that? What about full body? (I'm on a K-x I don't know how much different the sensor is from your K-7)

alan those are amazing photos! I am so bad at manual focus and didn't plan on getting one since I take a lot of pics of kids.....But your pics make me think I could be doing a LOT with my FA 50mm1.4 anyway. I just need WAY more practice....at focusing with a wide aperture especially. Even with AF I have a hard time in my viewfinder seeing if the spot I need in focus is actually in focus.

This is interesting to know. The main reason I want a longer lens than the 50 I already have is for more compression. But if you think it doesn't make too much difference.....I can't seem to get a decent full body shot of someone with a ton of bokeh....even stopped down to 1.4 I don't get it as blurred as the ones I'm trying to do. are you saying a 77 wouldn't give me that either? That it's basically the same except my distance from my subject?
