You added a cap to the shutter-release thread? What would be the name for one of those? Looks useful to push the button.

Edit: Found it. Soft release buttons.

Thanks anyways!

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to go with the X100. I'll get a new DSLR sometime way down the road, possibly the second successor to the K-5, or if I ever find myself in the bushes ;).

Hey there.

I've had my Pentax K-r for a year now, and was going to get the 15mm F/4 lens, then eventually get the K-5 replacement as a second camera so my girlfriend and I could share the cameras and lenses. I'll be traveling a lot over the next 2-3 years, and want to take some good pictures.

Then I started thinking about what I really need. I mainly do street photography with my 35mm f/2.4. It's great, but the large camera and gunshot-like shutter sound can scare people, especially in my paranoid city. I'd have the same problem with a 15mm and K-5 v2.0. The K-5 replacement is completely out of the question now.

So I started looking at smaller, quieter cameras. I came upon the Fujifilm X100. This thing looks great. It seems to be tailor made to take the kind of shots I take most of the time, except with a bit wider angle, which is what I want anyways. It's small, light, quiet, and still takes awesome pictures. And I really like the optical viewfinder over an electronic one. The pro camcorder I use has an EVF, and it always annoys me.

But then I found the Olympus OM-D EM-5. It comes to the same price, even though it's weather sealed, which would be ideal for when I want to go backpacking in two years. It also has interchangeable lenses, so I could switch up the primes. And it sounds like it might take a bit better quality pictures than the X100.

Now, this is where I'm conflicted. It looks like the Olympus would be a better all around camera. But I already have my K-r for that. If I get the EM-5, I would see no point in staying with Pentax and DSLRs, and I might have to sell the K-r. I would rather not do this. I want a sidekick, not a complete change of what I have. But I also don't want to regret paying $1200 for something when I could have bought a better camera at that price...

Thus, I have come to the internet for help. What do you think? X100 or EM-5?

Saw three wild Pentaxians today

What I always find weird is that whenever I go to a camera store, the salesmen are Pentaxians. They're usually from the older generation, so they love that you can use old film lenses on the new DSLRs. One even mentioned that he has a 645D.

But I have yet to see a Pentaxian out in the wild!

Edit: Even when I went on vacation to Anaheim, where I went to Disneyland for 7 days, Universal Studios for 1, and Newport Beach for 1. No Pentax! But then again, I left mine at home for the convenience of a Canon S95.

So just like any electronics really ;) Thanks for the replies. I won't have to worry about zoom lenses, either, because I will mostly be using the 35mm prime.

I want to enter a photo contest for a local event, but the only day I can go has rain in the forecast... Can I kill my K-r and/or the kit lenses with light rain or dampness? Anyone have some solutions?

Is any update worth updating the K-r? I'm still on 1.00 right now.

Does anyone have experiences with Polaroid batteries? I found this one and it's pretty cheap... Or what about this GTMax?

I'm definitely also looking at hoods to reduce glare, but I came across them when I was looking at ways to protect the lens.

Thanks a lot for the help, everyone!

Thanks, I'll check them out. So would I be able to use these hoods with the lenses? Should I choose a wider one for the 18-55mm lens?

Edit: What I mean by the first question is, I've heard of hoods specifically for Pentax lenses. Would these third party lenses fit?

K-r 18-55mm + 55-300mm Lens Hoods

Hello,

I am about to order a Pentax K-r DSLR package from B&H that includes an 18-55mm lens and a 55-300mm lens. The kit can be seen here.

I would really like to protect my lenses from scratches, since I'll mostly be using the camera on the go, for travel and such. I was looking at UV filters, but there's the problem with image quality. So I was looking at hoods instead.

I think the 18-55 mm lens has a 52 mm diameter. So would this wide hood be a good choice, or would this one work, too?

For the 55-300 mm lens, I believe it has a 58 mm diameter. So how does this one look?

I've heard B+W products are good. But at the same time, I've heard not all hoods fit on all cameras. So I'm not really sure on how to pick two out.

Thanks a lot!
