I do not have the K100D Super.

So the lenses are compatible, but just will not have the HSM/SDM feature?

I have a K100D and have been noticing that many of the newer lenses coming out have HSM / SDM for faster & quieter autofocus. My question is whether these lenses are compatible with my K100D?

I just purchased a Sigma 18-50 F2.8 EX DC. I found the non-macro version on Amazon for $270. It is a nice focal range with a constant 2.8 aperture and takes great pictures.

Well…

I had been leaning towards a constant aperture, and after talking with a few friends, went for the 18-50 F2.8 EX DC. I purchased a new, non-macro version found on Amazon for $270 from Cameta Camera. After receiving the lens yesterday and taking a few shots… Wow! What an improvement over the kit lens. I read some reviews of this lens complaining of a yellow cast to the images, but my copy seems to be perfect.

Here is the link if anyone else is looking for this lens:

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Thank you for all the replies. One last question: How does the 17-70 perform in low light?

I like to shoot later in the evening and very early. I know it has 2.8 at the 17 end, but what is it like handheld at the other focal lengths?

Thanks

I would like that.... but it costs at least $750 (quick google product search). A bit out of my price range. I want to stay under $500.

I am going to upgrade from the kit lens and have run into a quandary as to which of these lenses I want.

Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO

I like to shoot outdoor landscapes and close-ups of nature so the wide angle & macro features of both appeal. But also want a lens for some indoor/museum/evening shots.

The prices are similar to each other so that does not seem to be a factor

The 50mm to 70mm zoom difference does pose questions as to how much is the extra 20mm useful. Also how well do they compare for indoor/low light shooting past the widest end?

I guess it boils down to the extra reach of the 17-70mm vs. the constant 2.8 of the 18-50mm. Are there other differences I need to consider for these two lenses?

Thanks

Best 50mm Lens for a Newbie

I am a bit new to the SLR world having had my K100D for about 6 months now. I am starting to move beyond the 18-55mm kit lens and looking at getting my first prime. The 50mm lens is a relatively inexpensive and plentiful lens and I think a good place for me to start. My question is which one? I have briefly used a Pentax-M 50mm F2 lens but am still going through the P&S to SLR learning curve so I think a full manual lens is beyond me at this point.

I was wondering which I should be looking at? The Pentax-A 50mm f2 or f1.7 or f1.4 or an autofocus lens? I wish cost was not an issue, but it is for me.

What real world difference does the aperture size matter from f2 – f1.4? I will be taking a trip to Italy next May and will be shooting indoors (museums and such) and also want to shoot some at night.

Thanks

Hello all,

I have had my K100D for about 6 months which marks my debut into SLR photography. So far a challenging, but fun learning curve. I am quickly learning about lenses and the costs therein. Wow! I will be traveling to Italy & Spain next May so I want to learning as much as possible until then to make the most of the trip.

I am glad to have found this forum for the advice and friendly banter and no, it does not rain here all the time. ;)
