K-30 attached to a 170-500 DG (First field test of the lens since I got it):

Still busy working through the images from the field test, but am impressed with the sharpness of the lens, and IQ even at 500.

Lol, how on earth is using a standard lens mount a bad thing, for ANY manufacturer?

Having spoken to various Canon & Nikon users about why I prefer Pentax, most have agreed that a standard lens mount "that goes goes back to the days of your grandmother's first menstrual cycle", is a good thing. Guess that is one of the reasons why you tend to see more used Nikon & Canon gear out there, than Pentax. As Pentaxians we generally keep our gear, as it still has its' uses even if you upgrade bodies.

Who are you calling that... oh, wait!

Was at an airshow once, with a bunch of Canikons around, and was quite surprised to see a Pentax shooter in the crowd. Singled him out, and we had a long discussion about why we shoot Pentax. In South Africa there is NO shortage of Canon/Nikon gear, but mention Pentax and people often have no idea what you are talking about. My latest acquistion, a Sigma 170-500 APO DG, was purely by accident when I was browsing a local online auction site, I was the only bidder and the auction even closed early. I spoke to the seller about the lens, and he was shooting with it on Canon with an adaptor. Pity, as I thought I might have been speaking to another Pentaxian.

This is on it's way to me:

Checked the reviews on PF and others, before pulling the trigger. I don't often see Pentax-mount lenses in South Africa, and was the only bidder, heh.

I love my 18-135, it's currently what I use most often. Attached to the front of my K-30, it's survived some hectic weather, as well as produced nice results, here is one of my most recent (they were tame enough, so could get nice and close):

Before I got the K-30, I considered all the options, as Pentax is virtually non-existent in South Africa, and I could've picked up a Canon/NIkon bundle almost anywhere (unlike my K-30 which I eventually imported). I spoke to a number of local pros, that either shoot Canon or Nikon, and discussed the Pros and Cons of their respectives brand with them. What eventually convinced me to stick with Pentax, were various comparative reviews with the K-30 and Canon/Nikon equivalents, and except for one that was blatantly biased towards the Nikon, the K-30 come out on top.

Ofc, the backward compatibility of lenses is also a major plus for me.

Nooooooo, no K-3 just yet, as I would be forced to purchase it, or any other significant upgrade to the K-30 (or even K5) range....

As it is, am going to have to get one of the WR flashes! :D

In a situation like the OP's, I would back out as quickly as possible, as it is indeed a "no win" situation, as has already been stated in this thread.

If someone shows genuine interest in my equipment, and is not derogatory about it, then I will happily explain my reasons for shooting Pentax, and would also be interested in their reasons for shooting with what they do (more often than has been due to the marketing of Canon or Nikon, and lack thereof by Pentax).

However, I will be derogatory of someone who claims to be a Pro, but shoots on Full Auto with the kit lens and popup flash, regardless of the brand.

Was the only Pentax I saw at a road race this weekend, just saw Canikons. Some guy came over to me and asked me what camera I had, I told him a Pentax K-30, he looked confused, said he had a Nikon, had never heard of Pentax, and walked away.... never got to find out which Nikon, and where it was.

I am very interested in Pentax's FF ideas, however, reading this thread got me thinking, would it not be better if Pentax focused on their current MF offerings and improved it from there?. They have got themselves firmly established in the MF market, and I can only guess that there is more money to be made there, than bringing out a whole new range with FF.

Just my idea.

Hi,

I am helping out a friend that is looking for the photographer of this image:

They want to take it to a related conference, and would also like a high-resolution version to enlarge. Remuneration can be discussed with them, I am merely assisting in tracking down him or her.

How many K-30 owners do we have?

Either choice is good re. the lenses, I thin kit really comes down to what you want to photograph, and the reach you need. My next lens is going to be the 50-200 WR (although I do need something to replace my old 100-300), after that I only want to get DA*s, if possible. Also want to get some decent in the +300 range... ugh, think I need to win a lottery or two! :D

From my experience, you never stop learning in photography, I find there is always some new idea, process or technique that comes along, that teaches me something new.

Anyone use the K30 in the rain?

Yeah, I did indeed read it, so far my K-30 seems happy. While I was out in the rain, the aperture didn't want to change in Av mode (but could've been due to the battery being in the yellow already), so just switched it on and off, and all was fine again!

I also considered that kit, but went for the 18-135, now I want the 50-200 WR, oh, and all the DA*'s! For some reason, my bank manager quivers in his boot at the thought!

Yes, most of the people that know me, will not say "it's the camera" or something similar. Usually when in mixed company (as in those that know my feeling on it, and those that don't), my first indication at an "it's the camera"-type comment is a raised eyebrow, and yes, obviously a topic change is a good idea. What I also usually will bring up, is a story I heard once where they took a bunch of pros and gave them cellphone cameras, and they still produced stunning images.

Took my K-30 (& 18-135 WR)out in a fairly heavy rain yesterday (couldn't resist the light and natural "softbox"-effect that was going on), and it seems to have survived ok. Needless to say, first made sure all ports/doors were closed properly, and dried it off a bit when I came back in, and also made sure not to open it while there was evidence of damp on it. Will only download and PP the photos in the next few days, so should be dry enough by then (and if any make the cut, will post them on PF! :D )

Really considering another WR lens as well.

Ugh, one thing that really irks me is when people think it's the camera, of any brand, that takes good photos!. Even on P or A, it has it's limitations. What I see often is more composition-type errors (like mentioned above) than exposure, because, for the most part, the modern camera can get it right.
