Part Two of Carl Weese's review/impressions are up. In this installment he discusses the CMOS sensor with particular attention to highlight clipping and noise. Very interesting review if you enjoy a photographer's approach to things. Great to see the 20D getting some attention on one of the leading photographry blogs out there esp. since there is rarely mutch attention foucsed on equiptment on Mike's blog. ch

Sorry but I wouldn't call any of these completely natural looking. I think I actually like the overtop approach. Check out some of Ben Wilmore's stuff. ch

How do you backup your photos?

As for my age, I guess you could say I am well past the half way point. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with backing up digital files of photographs, and given the ephemeral nature of anything digital, it certainly is a good idea. I guess I live on an island, but I have always taken photographs in hopes that a might just get a few that are worth printing. And I far prefer the pleasure of examing a printed photograph in my hand or behind a frame than I do sitting behind a monitor. I certainly agree that digital files take up considerably less space than their old world counterparts. But if one's personal photography collection consists of two terra bites of digital files and four 8x10's, than I submit that there is a problem. As for one's leagacy, where talking archives here aren't we, I would rather leave behind a simple folder consisting of the pictures that meant the most to me than some ungodly number of digital files that no one will ever bother to look at, or that I would want them too. ch

Might as well, a bad picture is a bad picture no matter how long its been in that shoe box. Unless you are Gary Winograd no one is going to print them. Do your kids a favor, leave them photo albums, not a digital mess, then they might actually look and enjoy some of those pictures. ch

Does anyone print the good ones? No better archival medium. The question is, when you become old and feeeble who is going to maintain, keep current all those files? I think people are too attached to every last file, if its not a keeper its not a keeper. Save all those storage costs, get a pigment based printer and some archival paper. Instead of spending all that time burning and backing up, do some printing. ch

The Best AF Lenses Money Can Buy

The other night I was going to look into the Zeiss lenses made for Pentax mount when I came across this article written in 2002 by Mike Johnston from his series of weekly columns at the Luminous Landscape (Note, Mike currently has his own website, theonlinephotographer.com). In any case, it was greatly comforting to read his opinions of Pentax's three FA primes and I thought that some readers here might take heart as well.

As a footnote, I truly lament the APS-C format for altering the field of view offered by these three excellent lenses. If for nothing else, I would love to see a Pentax FF sensor simply to bring these three lenses back to their rightful way of looking at the world. Charlie

(ps, please don't let this turn into a FF discussion, I fully realize that with a roll of TriX, and any number of excellent Pentax cameras, I can let these lenses do their thing the way they were designed to.) Charlie

K20D Price drop

Superfuzzy makes a good point, its not just the new entrants to the dslr market that a manufacturer needs to target. The advent of ebay and to some extent craig's list and forums like this have made switching brands relatively easy and less painful than previously. Nevertheless, I think most people would just prefer to avoid the hassle. In a strange way, Pentax put itself in diffciult spot with the K10d. Compared to other brands it was simply a no brainer that it was and is (for a few weeks anyway) an outstanding value. As such, Pentax's customer base now includes a great many cost conscious users, who I hate to say are not likely to be early adopters and could easily jump ship. Of course this is all just supposition, I have no idea what percentage of new sales come from exisiting owners. I believe the growth potential for dslrs is still enormous, and to what extent you continue to attract existing cutomers may just be inconsequential. As an aside, I would love to know what percentage of revenues are accounted for by lens sales. It would seem that would be an important component to camera pricing.

For myself, my camera is almost brand new, and just how far I go with this new hobby remains to be seen. The associated costs of digital photography appear quite daunting. I can't see ever putting up the cash for CS3, even lightroom is a nail bitter. External hardrive, RAM upgrade, dual core desktop, large monitor, photocentric printer, not to mention the camera peripherals, like flash, tripod, bag, lenses. The camera itself really is just the tip of the iceburg. Unless I really take the dive on most of the foregoing, I can't see going up camerawise. But the biggest thing for me is simply time, and right now I don't have that much to spend. ch

Stewart, that is the clearest explanation of card ratings I have read. Thanks for clearing things up for me. I also wanted to add that if one is in the market for a card capable of a fast data transfer, then your reader is just as important as the card. Lexar makes a UDMA firewire reader for SD and a UDMA dual slot, SD and CF usb reader. I have know idea what UDMA is or does, but purportedly it is extremely fast. Charlie

Heat from Sony

In what is likely the only real surprise at PMA, Sony anounced two new cameras, the A300 and A350 with fully articulating fully auto focus live view in 10 and 14 megapixel variants. Also, they plan on releasing their "flagship" 5D class camera, as yet unnamed, before the end of the year with their full frame sensor. I think the DSLR game just got very competitive, hold onto your hats. ch

Edit, its just a simple flip up type lcd, not fully articulating, whew, full function auto focus is scary though. Some new lenses announced as well. ch

Probably, a dumb question, but after you have transferred your images off the card do you delete them from the card using explorer or do you insert the card in the camaera and format it? ch

That part doesn't sound good. Who knows if it means anything, but one could read that to say, don't expect our dslr's to be priced below the comeptition in the future. It is also doesn't sound like Pentax and Hoya are on the same page. "the new parent company may ask." He makes it sound like they are two separate comapnies and the Pentax side doesn't really know what to expect going forward. Charlie

Mirror-Lockup no more than 2sec ?

It seems that C & N both have something to learn in the area of mirror lock up. From Michael Reichman's write up of the D3:

I find it simply inexcusable not to implememt mirror lock up with the 12 sec. timer, or to make it available with remote release. In any case, Pentax isn't alone on this one. ch

One thing that gets overlooked is the archival quality of film. Yes with modern pigment inks, prints will last a very long time. But the digital files themselves, I am not so sure. The wonderful thing about film is peace of mind. If the negatives are stored properly you can basically forget about them barring natural dissater. What's the half life of a hard drive? Cd-rom's and dvd's have a much longer shelf life but how long. I doubt seriously that your grandchildren will be able to pop one of them into a computer manufactured 50 years from now and be able to look at the contents. All you need for film or slides is a good set of eyes. ch

Another K10D vs. K100D super, advise please

Obviously, if you are in the market for a full featured highly customizable dslr, the K10D is the way go. The lack of a full RGB histogram is just one of many features not found on the K100D. I imagine for quite sophisticated users this is an important option. Once you become very proficient at post processing, I imagine the information can be utilized to produce better images. However, I am sure there are many K10D users who never check any of the histograms. For me the biggest issue between the two camers is simply the weight. I really came to enjoy light weight slrs that appeared in the waining days of film, and for me, today's dslrs are something of step backwards. Carry a K10D on your shoulder for a day and you may think twice about bringing it out with you the next time.

For many people, the process of taking pictures is as important as the images they capture, and for them the K10D is the only way to go becuase it provides a richer more rewarding experience. Others may simply have a passion for their family or their travels and wish to create a record either for themselves or to pass on. If you fall into the later group, I would venture to say that the smaller lighter camera would serve that function well simply becuase as things go, there is better chance that you will actually have your camera with you more often.

Of course, everyone sees things differently. Its good to see that you have held each camera. For me the difference in size and weight is significant, for others its hardly noticeable. If you fall into the later group, certainly get the K10, the added features are certainly worth the price. All said, the K10 probably represents the bast value of any camera on the market today. Its not perfect, but no camera is. ch

Actually, that discussion seemed oriented mostly to neutral density filters. As for qksilver's question, I don't have an answer, but one thing o consider doing hdr is that you want he aperature to stay the same so that everything stays in the same level of focus. Just do it in manual and change the speed. ch
