K10D, manual lenses, and metering

So if the DS screen fits and meters properly, why not just buy a Katz Eye DS screen and put it into your K10D?

Personally, I find that a Sekonic meter takes care of the whole issue for me.

What is Happening to Pentax?

Pentax was around in the middle of the last century, a big player. Way more history than Canon or Nikon camera divisions. They have always produced top quality gear.

Their pro gear was always the 6x7 and 645 cameras. Now they can take that expertise and use it for the DSLR market.

They're not going anywhere. I use lenses from the 1970's on my sooper-dooper electro whiz bang K10D, and they work just as well as they ever did.

K10D, manual lenses, and metering

Lenses from the A series onward work fine in manual. It's the old M and K lenses that seem to have trouble with the K10D.

If you use these lenses a lot, getting a hand-held light meter is not a bad idea.

Pentax flash studio setup

I bought two Pocket Wizards from ebay, and I use them in a studio. My flash meter happens to have the trigger for the Pocket Wizards, so now I'm only dealig with the cables from the power packs to the heads.

Calumet, Photogenic, and other companies make kits with power packs, stands, heads, umbrellas, and such for starting out. If you're going to set up a permanent studio, they are worth looking into.

Da* Primes: 200mm + 300mm

The only dumb question is the one you don't ask. If you want to know, ask.

Prime lenses are not zooms. They don't zoom at all, that's why they're primes. So the answer is NOT APPLICABLE, power zoom is for zoom lenses.

Crop Factor question... 35mm, DA and dslr

There are no "numbers based on a small sensor". What's your frame of reference? 35mm? 645? 6x7? 4x5 sheet film?

The 150mm lens is a wide normal on my 4x5 view camera, a short telephoto on my RB67, and a long telephoto on the 35mm and APS-C cameras. But it's still a 150mm lens, no matter what you mount it one.

The image circle of the lens determines what format it's usable on. A 6x7 lens can be mounted on a 35mm or APS-C camera and work fine, a lens made for a 35mm camera will work fine on APS-C but will not cover the whole frame on a 6x7 camera.

Taking color out of a photograph

To get back to the original topic, desaturating all but one color only works if the thing you desire is the ONLY item of that color.

I once mistakenly wore a light blue shirt in front of a television bluescreen. This is how the weather broadcasters show up in front of their maps - only when I walked past the scene my shirt showed up as a pale ghost!! It was pretty funny, actually.

There are also green screens. The main point is not to wear or use anything in the color of your screen or it'll be transparent and the background will show through.

I make this point because desatrurating all but one color will only work in very limited, controlled circumstances. Most of the ads and such you see were done with layer masks, the fastest and easiest way to create the effect.

"Headline" My Meeting at Pentax News...

This is getting silly!

I used a couple of MX bodes for 35mm work for many years, since they did the job intended. I still have my old Mamaiya RB67 Pro-S, a very old camera. I know people who have been using them in their studios for twenty years. If it works it works.

By the time you get to the K10D, you have the features and pixels to do any commercial job that could reasonable be expected.

Here's an example of rampant pixellitis in the industry:

My old childhood friend, John Manno, has a studio one block off Madison Avenue. He was using the Kodak DCS-14 back for the agencies, and they were happy. He paid a lot of money for it.

A year and a half later, they demanded the Leaf 22 megapixel back. The DCS-14 was just not good enough.

Not good enough to print on glossy stock on an offset press through maybe a 200 line screen? C'mon, who are they kidding?

It seems that the agencies have been hoist on their own petard. They are so intent on selling consumers More Pixels, they sort of swallowed their own propaganda.

Pixellitis is a disease that effects people who value equipment more than the end result. Think about it: how much more resolution will you get from 12 megapixels than from 10? You have to quadruple the number of pixels to double the resolution. The difference between 10 and 12? Don't even bother to mention it!

.DNG compatibility problem?
Posted By Dana G

The point of the DNG specification is that any application that reads DNG can open your files even if it's new and the application authors have not yet tested the K10D.

I was opening DNG in ACR well before there was specific support. After Adobe tested the camera, some of the tone curves had been changed from the generic DNG. But if I had a job, and needed images for it, I could use the K10D and make my own tone curves.

Adobe created and owns TIFF, and doesn't charge for it. There seem to be few problems with TIFF, and it's been around for years. I suspect eventually DNG will become a de facto standard just like TIFF did, because it's all documented and available for anyone to read.

New K10D firmware 1.20 completely ignores almost everything

So now there's an update for the K10D. Many people had specific wishes, some rational and some just silly. But there are users who shoot tethered, and if you aren't one of those, perhaps you could refrain from commenting at all.

You seem to be one of those people who loves to gripe about how the world is not living up to your expectations. Well, get used to it. The world is what it is and you deal with what you have.

Just because you don't shoot in a studio and use cameras tethered, doesn't mean that Pentax shouldn't accommodate those who do.

Go shoot some photos and post them. Make yourself useful for once.

Ben, I suppose you have to post this because people don't know how to differentiate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, but know that those of us who actually understand and use these forums are aware of professionals being sponsored by manufacturers.

Canon and Hassleblad are perhaps the most prominent, but all manufacturers so so. You are doing nothing out of the ordinary in the professional world, and as a working photographer myself, I only wish I were on your level.

Most here respect you as a valid contributer to these forums. Don't let some idiot get you down!

And keep putting out those great fashion photos! You're willing to go farther out than I am and your clients actually seem to love it!

CameraAddicts.com: K10D's for $750 US

I agree that the only two stores to order from in New York that I know are trustworthy - I've dealt with both of them since before digital was even on the horizon - are B&H and Adorama.

Calumet is also a reputable dealer, as is Zeff Photo n Arlington and L B Wheaton in Worcester, but those are stores I can actually walk into and pick up the equipment myself.

I haven't lived in NYC for years, so there may or may not be other good dealers. These are just the ones I deal with personally.

Shutter lag debate K10D
Posted By Dana G
Replies: 49

How we didn't worry about shutter lag in the film days? You practiced with your camera, and a roll of cheap film, and used a pendulum. Trying to get the pendulum in the exact center would use up a few rolls of film. Then your instincts took over.

I think that because digital P&S cameras have a long delay between shutter press and actual exposure, we suddenly invented a whole new problem.

DSLR'S are like film SLR's. Not zippy like rangefinders but pretty much on a par with film cameras.

If you really want to see shutter lag on a pro film camera, get a medium format like the RB67, with its massive mirror that has to swing up before the shutter (in the lens) can fire!

Pentax Wish List

The older manual lenses had a pin that told the camera what aperture was set. The cameras had a cam that detected the position of the pin, or lever, and allowed manual metering with the original cameras even though the lens stayed opened.

That cam is missing from the digital cameras, so all lenses before the A series cannot be used in auto mode without stop-down metering. It also precludes any use of automatic metering, as the lens is not telling the camera what aperture is set.

Even though the camera cannot set the lens in any way, there were cameras that worked in auto exposure with aperture priority. If the camera knows what the lens is set to, it can compensate even though the lens is wide open.

It's a great lens, it is the normal lens for the digitals and a moderate wide on the film cameras.

It's probably one of the best of the lenses that I own. It has a real "3-D feel, I can't really describe why, but you'll love it!

The "normal" lens for the digitals is really the 31mm Limited. Hopefully there will be some less expensive designs in the future.

But the good news is that the hyper-expensive 85mm f/1.4 lenses can be substituted by the excellent but very numerous 50/1.4 lenses, as long as you can live without autofocus!

Sounds interesting. I still use Genuine Fractals if I need to upsize and image by a large amount.

Another little trick is to create a duplicate layer, apply a High Pass filter so you see some detail but not much, and make the blending mode Soft Light. Done properly it can sharpen an image non-destructively and allow a larger print.
