Landscape Bodiam Castle B&W

Picture of Bodiam Castle, near the in-laws in Kent. Photoshop used to straighten the verticals (although the left hand one needs a touch more) and handle the B&W conversion. Any thoughts?

Taken with my kx, which is clearly so old, Adorama only do it second hand: http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20570499.html

Still a great camera though!

Turn your 'auto' mode off. Start with Av mode and take lots and lots. This helped me move on to Manual mode without too much fuss. Oh, and another call for "Understanding Exposure". It's really excellent.

I've put a skinomi skin on my phone and it's excellent. They do protectors for most of high end electrical stuff. You could try them.

"what will you do with your pictures?"

Its a great question! For me, photography is a hobby and as others have said, it gets me out of the house. I'm getting to the stage where I'm starting to want to print more - I gave away some as birthday presents this year and (most!) were well received. Not interested in competitions really, unless its a 'just your camera, no post' type one. It kind of bugs me that when you see 'photograph of the year', you know that they didn't take that shot - a lot is done afterwards. I just want the best picture from my camera, time is too precious to spend it in front of a computer screen! That said, I have just cleaned up a shot of mine using PS and am happy with the results, so I can see why people like it. It's just not for me, most of the time. So to answer the question, I take photos for me primarily.

So I've cleaned up the shot in PS and sharpened it, etc, so now it looks like the attached. I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on how to improve this sort of shot (for the record I'm pretty happy with it, but always keen to know more!).

Thanks all.

I have a KX. It does 'dust removal' every time I switch it on. I've now tried a couple of shots with different lenses, and the dust spots are there which confirms they are on the sensor, not the lens. I've looked on Amazon and found this:

Digital SLR Camera Sensor Cleaning Pads with Fluid: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo

Anyone used it? Any idea how much it would cost me to get it professionally done? I live in the sticks in Devon, so popping to my local store involves nearly a two hour trip...!

Thanks to all for your responses.

Can anyone recommend a sensor cleaning kit? I've had a look at amazon and the reviews are sketchy to say the least - lots of arguing about whether the reviewer works for the company etc!

I have a photoshop copy, so can clean up the dust, presumably with clone tool? Will spread some likes round when I'm on a PC, not this tapatalk nonsense!

Everything I've read to date says to use f13-16 ish for landscape shots. Is that not true? I've only had a dslr for a year, so reading a lot, shooting a lot and deleting a lot!!

As the lens is brand new (I've only had it a few weeks) I'm guessing its the sensor that is causing those marks?? Can I clean that myself or do I need to get a pro to do it?

Pretty clueless on the cleaning side of things so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dear all

I have just upgraded my kit lens to a Tamron 17-50mm and took this photo of castle Drogo in Devon, UK:

When I zoom in it looks blurry to me, so will this show up on A2? Is this what you guys call 'pixel peeking'?

How can I make the shot sharper? I thought I'd focused roughly a third of the way into the shot (so probably haven't) and the camera (a kx) was resting on a rock with a 2 second delay on the shutter.

I've just bought the one for the k-x and I think it's far better than the manual. I've put it on my phone (HTC Desire HD) and can open it with no problems there too, using Adobe Reader for android.

Thanks. I was more interested in the macro function though, and that's A LOT more usually, although the SIGMA has it from 200-300 (I think).

Zoom lens and converters

Hello all

I've looked in the forum and can't find an answer to this, so apologies if this has been covered. I have the Pentax 55-200 DA lens that came as a pair with my K-x and 18-55. I like it a lot, but want more reach, for wildlife and close up work. Would a converter work for this? Would I still have autofocus? I have my eye on the Sigma 70-300 APO as it has decent reviews and won't make my wife divorce me but would my money be better spent on a converter (ie its cheaper, see earlier comment about divorce!).

Thanks for any help/advice.

Question about my 55-200 zoom lens

Thanks everyone for your responses. I've had a camera expert mate look at it, and check the focussing and it is all correct, so I'm worrying about nothing.

It is good for us newbies to know we can post here without being ridiculed for our ignorance!

Many thanks.

That's the bit it doesn't do! When I twist the 'zoom' bit, I get a little bit left hanging out. When I switch to MF, I can fully retract it. Does that mean its broken somehow?

Thanks for the very prompt response!

I'm pretty sure that a few weeks ago I would twist the large ring (not the focussing one, the zoom bit) and the lens would compact down for storage. Now it seems to leave a little bit sticking out, unless you manually twist the focussing ring. Am I misremembering? Do I not need to worry about the lens? I know its not supposed to act like a P&S camera.

Hello all

Frequent reader/(very!) infrequent poster here, I have a question about my lens. Once it has been used, it no longer retracts fully. A small bit (about a cm) sticks out, unless you switch on manual focussing in which case you can twist the lens fully back into its body. Does that make sense?

Is the lens broken? Seems to take decent pictures still, but this just annoys me. Is it worth taking back? My camera shop is a 70 mile round trip so any advice from on here would be gratefully received.

Also is the 55-300 mm a decent upgrade? Will I notice an improvement in IQ?

Many thanks to you both. Looking speculatively really. I was given a 50mm prime manual lens which is awesome but my focussing eye is not quite there yet. The price of this kens attracted me! Will look in the marketplace.
