Audio Recorder?

I'm looking to get into Field Recording and taking audio of nature sounds, mostly ambient type stuff, but I'd like to get a unit that does well for that AND plugs into my K5iis so that I can use it to take audio for videos I shoot on the Pentax.

Does something exist that will do an excellent job for both tasks? I've been told to get the Sony PCM D100 for nature recordings... but will this do well with the camera?

A final, third interest, is podcasting and interviews with people. If I can find one device that does all these well, I'd be VERY pleased!

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks so much guys!

This is such a great lens and an incredible price. I bought one in BGN condition from KEH about 2 months ago for the same price or I'd be all over this. Switching from DA* 16-50mm to this lens after nearly 10 years of shooting has radically improved my results. Anyone on the fence should buy this now. If you care about IQ, I promise you will NEVER go back to zooms after trying a limited prime. Sorry to interrupt EricBrown, but wanted to chime in and lend some support for my new favorite lens!

We've got a family of hawks nesting in our tallest palm tree and i need a setup that will let me show the momma hawk and her babies to a group of little kids, live.

I want to use a spotting scope or long lens attached to my K5IIs, then show the image on the camera screen, or even better, on an ipad or tablet???

Is it possible to do something like this? If so, what do i need?

I was considering purchasing an old A 400mm lens, but i dont thino that will allow me to do livescreen, right? Will an FA lens, or so i need a DA?

Please help! 12 little kids REALLY want to see this hawk family, and I'm willing to spend to make that happen.

Thank you all for the advice. Much appreciated!!!

Poll: Who's sticking with APSc?

I'm just wondering what will happen to prices on used DA and DA* lenses. Will they go down as the Pentaxian Pros move into FF and start selling off their old gear?

Or will they only increase now that Pros from Cannikon can jump into the Pentax line and start playing around with our beloved toys?

Will the lenses that cover both APS-C and FF increase in value, but the APS-C lenses decline?

Exciting times to be a Pentaxian!

Replicate Light Leaks on Medium Format Film?

Anyone know how I can replicate this look with future rolls of film? The first roll I shot through my Pentax 645n exhibited a lot of shots like this, but the second one looked perfectly normal.

I like the light leak look much more, and am hoping that I can do it at will moving forward, but am not sure how to make it happen. Could I just not spool the film as tightly on the roll and let a little light hit the edges of it before I turn it in for processing?

Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Best Audio Recording Device for Nature Sounds?

Thanks everyone for the awesome input!

I'll keep looking and researching and thinking about this. I'm trying to figure out now how important it will be to be able to change the field of view. I am new to the audio stuff, but that seemed like a great feature on the Zoom when I was first thinking about it.

I'll let you guys know what I end up going with, and if anyone else has any other advice please feel free to chime in! The assistance is MOST appreciated!

Best Audio Recording Device for Nature Sounds?

Hi All!

I'm going to upgrade my trusty old K10D to one of the newer camera bodies so that I can finally shoot some video, but what I'm trying to sort out is which audio recording device I should be using for my specific purpose.

I know I need to get something an external audio recording device, but I'd love to get some advice from the forum.

I want to record nature sounds, while backpacking/camping/fishing/hiking. I'll be setting up the camera and audio recording device to shoot interesting scenes (sunrises and sunsets, waterfalls, clouds rolling in, thunderstorms, etc.).

I've been reading up about the Zoom H4 and Tascam DR-100mkII, and these seem to be two of the better options out there? What I'm wondering is... are there any devices that are smaller? Weatherproof? How could I weatherproof one of these if I were to get one?

Anyone have direct advice with this stuff and able to offer some assistance? Thank you so much in advance!

(BTW, I'm not doing this commercially, so quality doesn't have to be PERFECT, but I would like to use the audio recordings for meditation purposes, so quality, non-hissy audio is certainly needed).

Digiscoping?

Hi All,

I just picked up rifle shooting again and I'm looking to grab a spotting scope, but thinking of making it do double duty with my Pentax DSLR. As I was Googling around for information yesterday and this morning, I ran across the term "Digiscoping", and that sounds like just what I'd like to do.

Has anyone here got experience with this? I'm looking for recommendations on what scopes to consider, as well as a budget I should expect to spend. I want a high-quality scope and am thinking of spending $500 - $1000 range, but wondering if that's even worth it considering that I could pick something like the DA* 300mm lens up for not that much more.

What's the advantage of the digiscope compared to using a longer telephoto lens? What are the disadvantages? Any recommendations on a scope, eyepiece, adapter, etc.?

Any advice is MUCH appreciated!

Should I Get the K5 IIs or Switch Systems?

Thanks for all the helpful feedback everyone. Sounds like the K5 clicking issue isn't really an issue as long as I'm willing to take some steps between the process of capture and upload, and that it's not the video files themselves, but the communications/translations between YouTube and the video (if that makes sense). I don't care all that much about sharing what I'm doing with the world so it's less of a problem than I originally thought.

I'm looking very hard now at the K-5 IIs and think I'll be picking it up shortly. I don't want to give up access to the lenses I've put together, as they're fantastic, and I don't want to have to re-learn a system, especially since my Pentax cameras have been so tough and durable.

Thanks for all of your help!

Hi Adam,

So the K-30 doesn't suffer from that same issue in video mode?

I guess I need to do some more research here - I'm not really understanding the differences between the K30 and the K5 IIs. Back to the reviews!

Should I Get the K5 IIs or Switch Systems?

Hi All,

I've been a Pentaxian (and a dedicated one at that) since 2007, when I purchased my first K10D (and my first DSLR!). I've loved Pentax ever since, I picked up a few 35mm film cameras along with a medium format film along the way, then bought another gently used K10D just about 2 years ago to keep my budget allocated toward lens acquisition.

I am ready to upgrade bodies, and I have about $1,500 available due to a scholarship I won in High School, but it has to be used in 2013 (expires the day I turn 30 - about a year from now). I'd buy the K5 IIs immediately if it did everything it claims to do, plus had good video capabilities, but this stuff I read in the Pentax Forums review about a clicking sound throughout recorded videos is pretty unnerving.

Does anyone have any experience with the camera? I don't want to get it if I won't be able to take decent videos that aren't interrupted by obnoxious clicking sounds. I'd really hate to leave the Pentax line up, especially since I'm so familiar with it, really trust the direction they're going, and have so much already invested in it... but this might be a deal breaker for me if things are really bad in video mode.

Any input you all might have would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to get one body that can shoot both stills and record film in HD quality. I don't want to carry a ton of crap around, and I need to make the move soon. Any suggestions?

Thank you for all the feedback everyone!

This drive yesterday clicked, then stopped spinning.

I'm curious about this direct connection option though - I've been trying to access via USB.

I'll try removing it from the case and plugging in directly as suggested. Hopefully this will help!

Hard Drive Failure

Well, the absolute worst case scenario happened.

I've got two external hard drives I've been storing photos on, but during the process of copying the past two years of photos from one to the other, the HD containing the photos stopped working.

I brought it to work and a couple people took a look at it, we've tried to use some recovery programs, and nothing has worked at all. I wanted to make one last attempt at rescuing this afternoon, but as soon as I powered up the HD I heard the click of death.

Time to bite the bullet and pay for data recovery I guess, as I can't stand to let go of all the shots I've taken over this period of time (literally thousands and thousands of photos).

Anyone know of a good service where I can send away my HD? I'm willing to spend something like $500 or even more to pay for it. I just need to get it done and want to go with a reputable firm.

Thanks for the input!

-Tim

Best Time-Lapse Controller?

Hey All,

I'm still shooting with a K10D, but I've got some great lenses and have missed some amazing opportunities because I lack a time-lapse controller. Years back there was one that was only about $100 to do some pretty complicated stuff, though it all had to be pre-programed in your computer, but I'm wondering if there's some standard go-to products on the market now at similar prices.

Anyone doing time-lapse photography and have some suggestions? I could spend up to around $500 on the unit. I'd use it mostly for scenery (not ready for astro stuff quite yet!).

Pros Beautiful, Incredible IQ, Awesome Viewfinder, Lightweight & Compact Cons No In-Body Aperture Control, Impossible to Find Rating 9 Price (U.S. Dollars) $200 Years Owned 2

I can recommend this camera: Yes

Value, Features, Performance & Size
This is a rare camera that I've never again seen for sale since I picked it up on the forums a couple years back from a forum superstar. With the ability shoot 1/4000th, it's slim profile, and lightweight, it's my go-to film camera, and I've taken it just about everywhere.

Camera Review
I first picked up this camera just because it was beautiful. I had been testing the waters of Film Photography after I got a bit tired of shooting with my K10D, and was really enjoying myself, but couldn't stand the light leaks I experienced from a K1000 and an ME Super.

Instead of getting another cheapo without autofocus, I opted to go big and purchased the MZ-3 from another forum member, and I'm damn glad I did! This camera has gone through environments it probably should not have been exposed to, including two trips to Death Valley (and treks through sandstorms on the Mesquite Sand Dunes), as well as reaching the tip-top of Mt. Whitney (highest mountain the lower 48).

I've dragged it from temps reaching the 100s, to temps in the low 20s, and never had a single problem. Autofocus is fast, crisp, and accurate (I would say more accurate, and far faster than my K10D). The viewfinder is bright as can be (and beautiful), and the camera itself is an ease and pleasure to work with, though I do miss in-body aperture control (not that badly though- I sold an excellent condition PZ-1p after passing only two rolls of film through it because I liked the MZ-3 so much more!).

The FA 28-70 f/4 produces incredible images with this body, and I use that lens just about exclusively with it. However, I have also shot excellent photos with an M 28 f/3.5, an A 50 f/1.7, an M 135 f/3.5, and an M 200 f/4. This is a workhorse camera capable of shooting incredible images, if you have the patience to set your apertures via lens rings.

Note: Shooting in "A" mode, the camera will autoselect aperture for you, but I prefer to have control over that.

If I were to upgrade camera bodies, the only change I would even remotely consider would be a movement to the legendary MZ-S, but at $400+ per body, the MZ-3 offers enough functionality and such incredible performance that I'm not planning on purchasing another body any time soon.

If you have the opportunity to buy one, don't pass it up.
