Just spent a couple of weeks in Turkey, two Pentax spotted: one in Pamukkale (young Caucasian lady), one in Ephesus (young Japanese lady).

I think you're only modifying the pointers from the FAT. As opposed to clearing all the FAT when formatting.

Formatting will do (probably) one of the two: setting up a filesystem (from scratch) on the card or clearing the root directory and FAT on the card while keeping the format type and cluster size.
There is always a chance Windows (or whatever OS) will format the card according to its own preset preference. It's also possible the camera would like slightly different settings (such as a smaller/bigger cluster size).

My two cents? Most of the time it will not matter, but if one wants to be on the safe side -> he will format with the camera.

Some technical reading.

P mode; what's the difference between E-Dial set to P Shift or to Av?

I'll have to perform the test suggested by Anders over the weekend, there's no substitute for proper experimentation.

However, I find the P mode as very convenient for me, the issue discussed here being only of academic interest (as long as I can tell the camera to do what I want it to do).

Thank you,
Sunday

Yes, that's a comprehensive explanation.

QuoteQuote:

The difference between this [Av or Tv] and Program Shift mode is that the Aperture or Shutter speed are explicitly fixed to your set value, rather than simply biasing the metering system while the camera still selects the actual values of both variables.

My conclusion? There is not any (sensible) difference between the 3 selectable modes. Not for me, anyway.

Thanks again,
Sunday

P mode; what's the difference between E-Dial set to P Shift or to Av?

Thanks guys.

My mistake: I'm talking about a K-r.
The settings available for the E-dial in P mode are:
P Shift
Tv
Av
OFF
I'll try to give an example so it'll be more clear.
If I set the E-dial to P Shift and press halfway the shutter release I may get the following settings (I will consider a fixed ISO to eliminate one variable):
f5/200
If I move the E-dial one notch to the right I will get f5.6/160
The camera closes the aperture to decrease the exposure with 1/3 EV and slows the shutter down to compensate and regain the third of a stop.
Press the GB - all back to the initial settings.

If I set the E-dial to Av and make the same steps, the same thing will happen.
I will have first f5/200, move the E-dial to the right and get f5.6/160.
GB will reset the values.

In other words, for any setting of the E-dial in P mode, the camera will adjust the aperture/shutter speed pair in order to keep the measured exposure.
And I'm ready to bet the same will happen if I will set it to Tv.

So why 3 settings available?
What other things are changing that I'm not observing when using Av instead of P Shift?

I guess I am being thick and there's an obvious answer to this, but please help me.
What is the functional difference between the following two settings when shooting in Program mode?
E-dial set to P Shift
E-dial set to Av
To me it looks both settings allow the user to bias the camera towards a faster shutter/wider aperture or a slower shutter/narrower aperture. For both settings the Green Button resets the settings to the ones initially computed by the camera.
The only difference I could find is when the E-dial is set to Av the aperture value is underlined (and same goes for E-dial on Tv, I presume).

Are there any subtleties eluding me?

I suspect the question is in some way stupid, but seeing the patience and the kindness of the users of this forum I got the courage to ask it.

Thanks,
Sunday

What else do I need?

I'm in a similar position (well, except the baby, congratulations) and on my list there is a tripod, a second card, a second battery, the dust blower. Also the fine printing at the bottom of the list says hoods for lenses and a CPL. A small bag also (I already have a bigger one).

What I already have and perhaps would be useful to you is a photography book. If you're a beginner (like myself) move it to the top of the list.

And of course there's always a second list filled with lenses. My camera is on its way, didn't shoot a picture so far, but I'm salivating at lenses.

Disable SR when using a tripod. Why?

If is true the reason SR hinders the image quality is the sensor vibration caused by electromagnetic(?) noise.
My concern is strictly theoretical, mind you, I'm not planning to fix the issue :)

Thank you all for your help with my inquiry, I'll try to get it back on track.

I am not questioning whether it's better or not w/o SR on tripod, I take it as a given (I suppose Pentax would not have bothered to come with it out of the blue and put it in the manual if it were not real).
My curiosity was on the technical specifics of the issue, and post #4 (gp1806) gave me a good starting point so far. I'll try and look for additional info on this matter.

Regarding the desirability of using or not using SR w/ a tripod - I guess one should follow the book. Or not, if he doesn't want to and his results are fine :)

Thanks again, people.

I am reading one must disable the shake reduction system when using a tripod. I understand it may not be necessary using the SR together with a tripod, but cannot understand why it should be disabled.
Does it affect the image? Can somebody explain in technical terms, other than "it's written in the manual"?

Thank you.

Beginners Article 1: Nomenclature

As a beginner I am interested in stuff like this and appreciate your effort. However, I would like to point you some small errors (so small they're probably difficult to notice).

I would say you need less than1/60th of a second.

@Barrel/pincushion chapters: maybe you should drop the convex/concave terms (I would say barrel is convex and pincushion is concave) and attach some images. These 2 from wikipedia (barrel, pincushion) would clarify the issue.

When time will allow you, I would like to read in more detail about ISO and f-stops (relation between aperture, shutter speed and ISO).

I hope I don't seem to be condescending, I assure you I am not (being a beginner), just trying to point out some fuzzy stuff.
Thanks again for you effort.

The 50mm f/1.4 lens: Photography's Magic Bullet

I noticed the conversations revolves around the FA 50mm f/1.4.
What about other 50mm f/1.4 lenses? I plan to buy one of them in the next months, is out there one to rule them all, or any of them would do?
I'm talking about Auto Chinon 50mm f/1.4, Pentax-A 50mm f/1.4, Pentax-M 50mm f/1.4, Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4, Vivitar 50mm f/1.4 and (presumably) so on.

Hi all,

you have a newbie amongst you (that would be me). My K-r, two kit zooms and a cheap prime are on their way and while waiting for them I spend most of my free time reading about Pentax, lenses, photography and whatnot.

I'm 37, working in IT and planning to learn how to take decent family and holiday photos. So far I did not have great success with my former point and shoots.

Your community looks great, I'm really glad I can join (and take advantage of your knowledge).

Regards,
Sunday
