O.K., I'm sure it's way simple and very evident to everyone but me, but where are the photos for contest #15 that I'm supposed to vote on?

Why purchasing a Pentax K10D makes sense.

In the days before iPods, when you built a stereo system from components, the word was to spend the biggest part of your budget on the speakers, the part of the system that you actually listen to.

I think the same could be said for photographic systems, spend the biggest part of your budget on the lenses, the part of the system that actually gathers the light. And while we're all wondering about the next body to come, we can still use all those legacy lenses from decades ago.

I bought into the Pentax system because of the two new DA* lenses. Two lenses covering a 35mm equivalent of 24 to 200mm, 2.8 fixed aperture, weatherized and image stabilized. I couldn't come up with anything close to the quality and convenience in Nikon or Canon, let alone for the price.

I suppose you could build a system around the L-series lenses from Canon, but I made that mistake with the Contax system years ago. I reasoned I could add those fab Zeiss lenses as needed, but the cost was just too great. I had to settle for Yashica and Kiron; not bad lenses, but not why I bought into the Contax system in the first place.

So for me, the K10D purchase was a means to use some beautiful Pentax glass.

Thin filters really necessary?

Looks like I better make the additional investment in the slim filter.

Thanks for your help.

Thin filters really necessary?

I need to buy a circular polarizing filter for my 16-50 DA* lens. Do I need to get the thin version of the filter, or did Pentax take this into consideration when they gave it a 77MM size? I may also add the 12-14 lens to my bag sometime, also taking the 77mm filter. Same question for the 12-24, will I get vignetting if I use the standard thickness filter?

Lens recommendations for K10D

Your lenses certainly cover a nice range from 12 through 250mm. While the 18-250 may not be a real "fast" lens, that's probably not a problem for your landscape work if you're using a tripod.

If you're looking for another lens to do something you're not getting with what you have, you could consider a macro lens. I'm not sure if there's much call for "macro landscape", but macros are great for close up photography of plants, flowers, moss, insects, etc.

You could also consider a fish-eye lens, like the Pentax 10-17. You can get some great images with a fish-eye, and the distortions are often less of a problem in landscapes than with architectural subjects.

Sometimes the best bet is just go out and take tons of pictures of what you like and start paying attention to the limitations of your equipment. Look at your images and see if there are problems you need to solve. A new lens may be the answer, or maybe a tripod, circular polarizing filter or a good alarm clock to get up before sunrise. :)

Sigma HSM lenses for Pentax?

I've been unable to find a thread covering this question. Any word out there if and/or when Sigma (or any other mfr) will offer their lenses for Pentax with the HSM motors now that the K10D supports the SDM lens?

Which flash for my K10D?

I'd like to add a flash to my kit. I would probably use a dome diffuser as I typically don't like the effect of direct flash and seem never to have a convenient light-colored ceiling to bounce off of.

I would probably use the flash for smaller groups of people, fill flash, perhaps off-camera for better portrait lighting. And, of course, from the upper deck of the stadium with the other 1000 folks and their "Auto-Flash" settings.

The 360 looks O.K., what am I missing if I don't get the 540? I've read a number of complaints about the 540 in various forums though. How about 3rd-party flashes, something else I should be looking at?

What are you using, what has your experience been?

Perhaps you would be good enough to tell me how to place the K10D logo you have in my signature.

Thanks

How do I add the "Proud owner of a K10D" logo to my signature? Can't find the answer anywhere.

Thanks

Nice to be here.

I started photography with my Petri Color 35 in the early 70's, moved on to my Contax 139 Quartz with the beautiful Zeiss 50 f1.4 (Yashica FX-3 Super 2000 2nd body) in the early 80's, then the Nikon N70 with the 24-120 in the 90's. I've had a number of 35mm point and shoots along the way as well as my Loreo Stereo and Poloroid pinhole.

Then came digital, with a bunch of point and shoots, the latest my Canon SD800 IS. I choose my cameras by lens and when I heard about the new Pentax 16-50 and 50-135 lenses earlier this year, I decided this was where I would dive into the DSLR world.

I've had my K10D for a little over a month now and am still getting to know it. I passed on the kit lens and with that savings plus the rebates, almost paid for the 50 f1.4 lens. The 50-135 f2.8 was available at the same time, so I got it too. Just received my 16-50 f2.8 a week ago and am enjoying the wider angle of view.
