My K3 is in the mail. My K5iis is also in the mail, and that one will have to be returned. I had set my heart on the K5iis, thinking I could not afford the K3. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I was going to continue to want that K3 and probably spend more money in the long run if I didn't just go ahead and get it now. Can't wait to get it. I'm expecting quite a learning curve from my little K-x.

Another mark in favor of staying with Pentax. I hate digging in menus....

Hi all. I used several manual lens on my k-x for a couple of years, learning how to use the camera. I learned to use the Exposure Compensation button to let it set an appropriate shutter speed in place of using the light meter. Last spring I bought a SMC F 50 1.7 from KEH, and I continued to use the button to check for correct exposure. Now I'm wondering -- should this lens be able to work with the light meter, or am I doing it the right way for this lens? Would appreciate any help...

K-x focusing screen is also replaceable, just so you know. I have a Katzeye on my K-x. Helps a lot with the manual focusing.
I have been considering the same question about lens versus a new camera lately, so nice to see all the thoughtful replies.

Should receive the Amazon Basics camera backpack tomorrow. For $35 it appears to be an awesome bag. Looking forward to using it on vacation. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002VPE1WK
Also just bought a Sears 75-260 today. Hope it gets here in time, too.
My son is bringing me a film camera with a Cosina 50 mm on it. Judging from reviews, this doesn't appear to be anything special, but I'll enjoy trying it out anyway. It would be great if it's a mistake and it's really a 55mm.

I agree, it's a wonderful site. It has been a great help to me over the past year, being new to Pentax and new to DSLRs as well.

This is just a snapshot taken with my nothing-special 50 mm. Working on manual focusing and I think it finally came together with this shot and several others! :D |

That is really encouraging to hear! I would love it if I never felt the need to switch to AF lenses.

I've been reading this forum for a year, so I don't know how I had never heard of catch-in-focus, but I had not. I went back and read everything I could dig up on this forum on the subject. Great information!
I've been able to get CIF to work with my 50mm and 28mm lenses, but not my 135mm. Not sure what's up with that, but at least I know it works on my camera. I played with it a lot yesterday. Seems like as long as I pay attention to my depth of field, it's as good as AF - or perhaps better, since AF is hit and miss sometimes. Between this and the Katzeye that came yesterday, I should be in much better shape than before regarding manual focus.
I HAVE to have the patience for manual focus, because I can't afford AF lenses right now (and probably not for a very long time.) The more I get into things, the more I think this is better anyway. Photography, to me, is worth studying, practicing, and doing well. If I ever move to AF, at least it won't be because I think I can't learn to focus manually.

Kenafein: I've been having the same types of problems. My Katzeye has finally been shipped, and I'm anxious to see if that helps me focus faster and more accurately. My interest is primarily in using manual lenses, but so far it has not been especially easy to master focus.
JeffJS and joe.penn, thanks very much for the information about the CIF! I have it marked in my K-x manual to read after work today. I can see how that could be very, very helpful in this situation.

UnknownVT brought up an interesting alternative. When I was researching for a flash, I read on this forum that you can use an opaque film canister as a diffuser to cover the onboard flash. I now carry one in my bag, whereas I don't carry the Bower unless I know I am going to use it.

I bought a Bower SFD926P for my K-x last year and it seems to work fine. I do not know a lot about flash and just wanted something to use during those times when I had to have something without spending a lot of money. It is TTL and cost around $105 last December.
