How much are willing to shell out for Knew?

I am glad the Pentax APS-C family continues to move forward. Being part of the fixed budget (retired) crowd I hope they don't price me out of the market. It is comforting to know that Pentax is moving their vision of photography forward at a measured pace. I am tired of most camera marketing trying to convince me that my current camera is no good, even though it was the greatest thing just two years ago. I would rather use my current camera and enjoy it until it ceases to function, and then jump back into the market for a replacement I need, not one that some marketing firm is trying to convince me to buy.

Two years apart and very similar lighting. Makes a lovely set. I especially like the energy in the first one. Feels like the water is ready to break over my shoes. Thanks for sharing.

K-3 Mark III Flagship -- Advantages over the K-3 II

I hope that whatever innovations we get will be evolutionary. I like my K5IIs' design approach to photography. I would be happy if the K3III will continue the current direction with improvements.

Highlights Blowing Out?

I usually have my K5IIs set for bracketing with matrix exposure. This allows me to be covered for blown highlights. Digital sensors are like slide film in that it is too easy to blow the highlights. I find my camera wants to overexpose, so I keep it set for -1ev which works well with bracketing.

This is a new security feature. Thieves will not want to steal a camera with an unknown Logo on it. Let them steal the Nikons, Canons, and Sonys. We will be safe with the Ricoh anti-theft Logo.

I processed the RAW file with Oloneo HDRengine to recover the lost highlights and shadows. I used Corel Paintshop Pro X4 to adjust tones and to align and crop the picture. I tried to keep some of the sundown tones in the sky and shadows because I liked the feeling of getting in the last minutes of flight time.

I have been using HDRengine version with great results handheld. The automatic alignment feature works great with my K7 RAW files. :)

Ricoh buying Pentax?

As the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy intoned, "Don't Panic." When Hoya bought Pentax, Chicken Littles were running everywhere on the forums. Even with Hoya really only interested in the medical side of the house, they kept the Pentax brand alive with the likes of the K7 and K5. I suspect, Ricoh is actually looking to get into the DSLR consumer market and the Pentax legacy is a good place to start.

The problem is not the HDR imaging, the problem is tone mapping operators. Tone mapping algorithms could be developed to be both realistic and a return to the earlier Pentax look.

When I outgrow the feature set of my K7 (or my K10D for that matter), I might consider another system. At my current (slow) pace of improving as a photographer, that may not happen in the next 20 years.

With Ricoh in control, maybe we will see a radical new approach in Pentax DSLRs, like this prototype process from AMP:

DxO Optics Pro 6.5 (one shot HDR) has turned my K10D and K-7 into the camera I always wanted. It is almost magical. It is truly amazing what it does with the RAW files.

I often wonder at the "trash talking" that snapshot photography gets. In my mind, snapshots are akin to journalistic photography in that they capture a moment without artificial staging.

Here is a link to an interesting short story on snapshot photography"
