K5 vs K30?

awesome! thanks for the updated list. The fps burst, weather resistant body, faster shutter speed, can have a battery grip, big iso range, hdmi out, and longer battery life are enough to keep me convinced.

I updated the battery life advantage a bit, just in case others read this and became confused as to why the advantage of having the k5 listed at 450 shots vs the k30 @ 1000 shots.

Updated list of K-5 advantages vs. K-30
1) faster FPS burst
2) metal body
3) top lcd
4) a few more dedicated buttons (eg separate AF and AE-L, AF number of points selection switch)
5) faster shutter speed 1/8000
6) provision for battery grip
7) 14 bit RAW
8) 80 - 51200 ISO
9) expanded bracketing choices
10) expanded user modes (5 vs 2)
11) much longer battery life (k30~450 shots vs k5:1,000+)
12) HDMI out
13) microphone jack
14) DOF on the on/off switch
15) much deeper RAW buffer
16) More effective self sensor cleaning (K30 just shakes sensor, K-5 includes some ultra sonic magic that is very effective). Credit to Class A for noticing this. As someone with a K-x and K-5 I can attest to the excellent sensor self cleaning of the K-5 vs the K-x.
17) If the K30 sensor performs as the K-01 (seems likely, both 12 bit RAW and ISO100 floor) then the K-5 has slightly better IQ at all ISO's, see DXO graphs

I think by playback on an external monitro/tv they mean after the recording you go home and then hook up the camera to review images/videos. Or you could bring a laptop or tablet(if compatible).

I think at this point Im still sticking with the k5 since prices are good now. But we will see what people say regarding the k30 but unlikely anything that could sway me...

video format, weight and colors are double edge swords...

if you dont do much video then just having 1080p recording is fine, regardless of format (this applies to me)

weight can be good to make it feel solid and helps balance out a heavy/long lens (i like this)

color is cool to some degree but after having a whte kx with white kit lens, its annoying that all other lenses are black (least the one I use)

Sorry but that reply/quote is very unclear. I read that if you use the K5 battery grip with the lithium ion battery in the grip there is a space to slide the pentax f remote inside of it. however, i know there is no room for the remote when using the aa option in the k5 grip.

ok thanks for the confirmation. Now, I just wonder if it is the same size or smaller than the pentax f remote so that i can slide it into the battery grip.

good comprehensive list of advantages, hopefully it has/will help others in the same position as me. thanks.

quick question will a 3rd party IR remote that works with the kx work with either the K5 and/or the K30?

now to sell my kx and tablet for funds to buy the k5...

well if you buy the k5 battery grip then you have the option to put in either 6AA batteries or another rechargeable k5 battery. I think I would go for the extra k5 battery since it has a slot to slide in the pentax f remote...least from what I read (if i read it correctly).

funny, I couldve sworn I read somewhere the k30 had the faster fps burst rate...im not too concerned about the AF of the k5 as long as it equals or is better than the kx...i dont really care about video either, 1080p @ 25fps (k5) is better than what the kx has.

Oh yeah you brought up something I completely forgot to post about haha (regarding the K5 replacement), being that I have limited funds and will likely not be able to afford the new K5 replacement, I have limited this selection to just the K30 and K5.

Thanks all for the input.

Hi,
Looking to upgrade from the Kx to the K5 for a while now but now the K30 is quite similar to the K5 and cheaper...So basically should I stick with the K5 (please list why) or (list why) I should get the K30 over the K5. No, I do not want to go the mirrorless route (K01 or the Q).

If there is a thread like this somewhere already, please just link me to that so I can just close this thread unless of course there are people who would care to just share their thoughts here.

Thanks.
