Besides allowing you to be able to get really low down to the ground, it greatly magnifies what you see and is particularly advantageous for manual focusing.

I thought about getting that one too, until I realized using the stock screen in my lightbox that I couldn't centre it properly without the basic grid lines.

Yes you can get a M42 to M39 adapter ring. Hopefully that will go onto a genuine Pentax M42 adapter to save you any potential headaches.

I have the Komine version and it's great. Nice long throw focus ring.

I shoot pictures without my glasses or contacts. The diopter adjustment works enough. Once I added a Tenpa 1.36x viewfinder magnifier my focusing was better.
I don't like focussing using glasses for the same reason you've described. And with my contacts I have difficulty focussing.

The 40D is a very robust and solidly built camera. Has faster shutter speed using flash. Might be good to keep both.

The Tamron is an amazing lens, when it works. I sold mine after having it repaired under warranty. I had only used it a handful of times after buying it new. My Sigma 17-70 is still going strong and would be my recommendation. The extra 20mm of reach does come in handy.

It may be a number of things. Fungus comes to mind. In my case the only way to really tell is to shine a light right through the lens and you'll see it. My Vivitar 105 2.5 had a bit of haze in it, which I suspect was the blade oils evaporating in a warm environment. I had the lens professionally cleaned b/c I do not have the expertise to open it up.
For me it did affect image quality as I thought that I had a sudden case of glaucoma and couldn't focus properly.

I have the 2nd gen of the Sigma 17-70 and love it. I agree with i trax that you should get the 3rd gen or contemporary version.

OMG I hate the way Photobucket dumbs down the colors and resolution. Ugh.
