My K30 hit the floor today

There was an incident...involving a table top and a dog...

It had an external flash attached. The flash snapped off taking part of the hot shoe and the underlying circuit board. Ironically the lens, external flash and camera all still work but the onboard flash doesn't.

Has anyone ever had such a serious amount of damage? Was it repairable? For a decent price?

I was sick to my stomach this afternoon just thinking about it but that is getting me nowhere. Will call Pentax/Ricoh tomorrow.

Thanks Jim - we tried both ideas and although we did blow out a pile of gunk (dead skin cells/hand cream/dust mixture I'm sure!) it is still not working.

Will try these steps again tomorrow.

K10D 4 way arrow pad not working

I have a K 30 coming my way but have always planned to keep my K10D. Today, while out shooting my daughter's Cadet Parade I went to review some photos going "backwards" with the left pointing arrow key...no go! I then tried to use the other arrows (to choose ISO, WB, flash modes, etc.) and all but the left pointing arrow key continue to function properly. Had I been on auto WB I could still manage but being a gloriously sunny day today I set my WB accordingly...and now it is STUCK!

Anyone have experience or knowledge of this issue - either to fix the arrow key or a work around the issue so that I may continue to use the camera?

Thanks!

Getting ready to press the "buy" button

I am your basic hobbyist and have been using a K-10D since Christmas 2007 - shutter count of over 32,000.

I am pretty sure I am going to press the buy button on a K-30 with 18-135 WR for about $1000 Canadian. The upgraded ISO capabilities, ability to shoot video and the pixel peaking for focusing are reasons for upgrading as my current camera still performs well.

Anyone know of a better deal? Or a better lens choice in the same price range? I already have the kit 18-55, a manual 50 1.7, 55-300 (and a couple of 25+ year old lenses from pentax film days - 28-70 and a 70-210 but these are mediocre at best.)

Thanks for any input.

Stratario - I actually found it at prodigital for $399 US so I called them and guess what?...they offered it at $360 Canadian so i jumped on it! Hope I don't regret it. I'm sure my DH has purchased from them in the past with no problems so hopefully it will be the same for me.

OK I solved my own problem. Did a lot of searching and found the 55-300 for $360 so I clicked the buy button really quickly. I'm sure from the reviews I've read here that it is a good lens for me and now that I got it at what I think is a good price I feel better about it. Should be in my hands by Friday.

Thanks to everyone who offers their personal reviews. I am not technically knowledgeable about all the fine details but I can read the score numbers quite well and those and your commnets really helped me a lot!

Of course $$ is the deciding factor - if it wasn't I wouldn't need your help:lol:

Im a MWAC - taking shots of kids sports, landscapes, etc. I have am old Magnicon 70-210 that I am not happy with the IQ so I really need a decent, inexpensive zoom.

In my market (Canada) I can get the DA 50-200 for approximately $150, The FA 75-300 for $200, or jump up to the DA 55-300 for $500.

I am hopelessly lost in all the reviews and images I have looked at. Is the $300 more for the DA 55-300 going to make me happier? Can anyone link me to a cheaper price for it?

I am going to take my body in today to try the 2 DA lenses out but would love to hear you thoughts.

Thanks!

I am looking at a couple of lenses for my K10D:

FA 75-300 and the DA 50-200

What do the FA, DA (and all the other letters) mean? I know they are for different mounts but what other things are they distinguished by/for?

Thanks!

A friend's 4 year old son and less than 1 year old dog...I know...I'm nuts to do it!

If you were the mom would it bother you that only 1 eye is showing? I think it captures both boy and dog well.

Just a beginner "studio setup" of a black polar fleece blanket strung up between the 4-wheeler and the snowblower;) This is my 9 year old DD with no posing from me - she sometimes like to cooperate!

50 mm 1.7 at 2.8. This is a manual focus lens so I was testing my focusing skills.
Appreciate any CC. I know I cut off her chin in #1, #2 isn't as sharp as the rest and #3 has a PP mistake regarding her eye colour that I need to fix. Also #1 is way too cool looking to me...any suggestions on how to warm the skin tone?

I'm also a newbie to PSE6, did a bit of a colour pop saturation and a pioneer woman eye pop. Would love to know what you think. Thanks so much!

K10D and sharpness ??

Thanks for all the replies. I am taking all your info under consideration;)

I tend to do a lot of MWAC (mom with a camera) shooting of candids (our local fair was this weekend so I took 400+ photos, most just trying to capture one of my spinning, rotating or free falling kids:p) so i'm not expecting greatness from these and I think I'm getting decent results. I changed a couple of my in camera settings for the weekend and shot jpeg only. I think there is a slight difference in the SOOC image so i will continue playing. I do have PSE6 so can convert the RAW photos easily but for these candid types of large quantities I am still using jpeg for simplicity.

It is mostly my artsy/portrait shots that I notice this sharpness issue. I have a manual 50mm 1.7 so I will try using that more to practice and I will do a RAW+jpeg to compare. I do pay attention to all of the things mentioned below that help in creating crisp, sharp images but also realize that practice makes perfect. I want to somewhat master the camera before investing in better glass so it is kind of a catch 22 isn't it?

Again, thanks for all the advice.

K10D and sharpness ??

I am never 100% happy with the sharpness of my images SOOC. I'm sure this is a composite of the user ;) and the lens as I only have beginner lenses and I am a beginner myself.

I am wondering if anyone uses the in camera sharpness adjustment on a regular basis? How does this compare to just sharpening in post processing with either a JPEG or RAW image? I am going to do my own testing of each sharpmness adjutment on each of my lenses but thought some of you may have some insight/experience as well.

Thanks!

1st share of PSE6 play

Branching out this past week - started shooting in raw and invested in PSE6.

I find this all so subjective. I know what looks good to me and I admire a lot of peoples' work that I see on-line but when I work on my own it is so hard to know when to stop or when to push it a bit farther.

Anyway, I tend to like the varying colour saturations (from bright to subdued, depending on the subject/mood, etc.) so here is a share...

Hi Deludel! Thanks for the comments.

I am a beginner photographer and have MUCH to learn but one thing I was tremendously pleased with was the bokeh I achieved with these shots...the background is just grass. I used two lenses, a 27-70 and a 70-210, both at about 70mm (just testing diffrences in the lenses) and my settings were ISO 200 (cuz I forgot to even check this!), SS about 1000 (may have varied a tad over the range of photos I took) and f 4.5.

I did a tiny bit of PP in Picasa (cuz all I basically know how to do is crop, sharpen and basic conversions ;))

Let me know if there is anything else I could let you know about these.

Denise

Thanks for the comments guys!

I have a desperate problem with soft focus...sometimes it kind of works with the photos but I never manage to get that elusive "tack sharpness" - got any pointers? I'm using a K10D and have a couple of 20 year old lenses, a 27-70 and a 70-210. I'm shooting in manual and using the shutter release for focusing. I'm using centre focusing. Anything else I need to tell you? I generally do all right with the exposure setting but would love to get better focus. Do you think the problem is with the photographer, the lens or the camera? I'm betting on the photographer cuz it's a lot cheaper to fix me than buy a new lens :D
