It is a common problem. The thickness of the screen is not always quite right, which means that you will need a shim to correct it. Search this forum for the word 'shim'. The can be ordered from Pentax. I myself made my own from a plastic folder. Ugly but cheap. And it works.

I have the 18-50 macro but not the 16-45, so I cant say much about how they compare. But regarding the Sigma it is a pretty good lens. To my taste the sharpness isn't quite there at 2.8, at least at the long end, unless you want a softer image, for instance when shooting portraits. At f4 it is fine though and from 5.6 it is quite exceptional. But even if i tend to use it as an f4 lens much like the 16-45, it still gives you the benefit of a brighter viewfinder. This helps manual focus when that is more convenient and, which is also quite good, makes it a little easier to see what is going on in the picture, like subtle facial expressions and such. The bokeh is quite nice. The "macro" function is also really helpful sometimes, and it can make for very nice close-ups of flowers and stuff. Contrast and colour are not quite on par with my old pentax primes but not bad either. regarding actual focal lenght it is shorter than my M50 1.7, at least at medium focal distances. It would be interesting to know how it compares with the 16-45 in that regard.
Hope that helps,
Erik

Thanks for all the info. There seems to be a lot of alternatives, I guess the best way is to pick one and figure out how to best use it.
All the best

I don't really need sofistication, I actually prefer simplicity. Good, on the other hand, would be nice.
Rense: I didn't know there is a difference in reliability between cds and dvds. I have been using dvds since I prefer to keep my original folders together for easier retrieval and cd's are often to small for my shoots. This could prove to be important info, thanks.

I've downloaded Picasa, but it seems like it can't handle photos on external drives and dvds while they are not connected. Am I right? Can Expression Media do that? My idea is to be able to browse through thumbnails without having to insert the disc, since that will take ages.

Thanks, maybe I'll check out Picasa.
Gooshin: thanks, building my own cheapo system is probably not a bad idea. But for now I will keep using Old Smelly here. There are so many things i need. Like a 50-135. And a 12-24. And maybe some food...

I should upgrade the entire computer, it will probably die on me soon, it smells like burnt plastic when I use it for heavy stuff. Worrying...

I have tried lightroom 1.04 but it was very slow on my computer. Are there other alternatives?

Hi!
I need a good system for cataloguing images stored on dvds. Is there a quick way to automaticly generate thumbnails that i can keep on my hard drive, with a reference to the disc where they are stored?
cheers

I do it with my sigma 18-50 macro. The focus plane does shift but not enough to push it out of the depht of field. As long as I zoom out that is, focusing at 18 and zooming in is not a good idea.

I cant really see the glamour of pro photography, the absolute majority of pro work seems to be very mundane and uncreative. I think much of the pro equipment specs are supposed to make up for the fact that there is never any time to be inspired.

It sounds really good. I would love to be able to use my old mf glass with full confidence. Maybe I should go for it...

Hi!
I've read a few claims that the Katzeye split screen does not affect metering with lenses faster than 5.6 (except when spot metering). Is that true? I had a no-name split screen for my KonicaMinolta 5D and it threw the meter off by anything from nothing to 3 stops, and it was no telling which way it would go.
I guess the KM and my current K10D are built differently, as well as the Katz eye might be a better screen, but can the combo really be that much better? Has any of you guys tested it in different conditions?

I hate the preflash too, it makes the onboard flash more or less useless for people shots, everyone half-close their eyes and look like they are on drugs or something. It's not just pentax of course, all brands seem to be about equal. P-ttl seems to be a real step back in usability compared to proper ttl. I have a few old auto-flashes from back when I had my LX and they are still very good and surprisingly accurate. To be on the safe side I bought a Wein voltage stepper to prevent the old goldies from burning the circuits in the camera. Money well spent I think.

Thanks everybody!
Well, I do like macro... Maybe the 85 f1.8 can be an excellent macro lens. Anyhow, the mount is quite similar to the pk, and I was able to almost fit the lenses on of my macro rings, but the aperture pin seems to protrude a little to far, so I didnt try to mount it on the camera itself.

Hi!
I just took over a few nice old lenses from a friend, among them a 85 f1,8 and a 300 f4,5. Are ther adapters that would allow me to mount them on my K10D?
All the best,
Erik

Is the f-value the same in both pictures? Most lenses handle CA better stopped down a bit.

Thanks, and sorry for not replying very quickly. Work, work, work. Well, mostly closeups rather than actual macros. And for now I have no external flash I can trust. I need to get myself a voltage stabilizer. But I guess exposure might be the key. I will try overexposing a little and see what happens.

Hi!
Spring has come here in Sweden, and a lot of pretty flowers are popping up. Many of them are a very intense blue, and I'm having trouble retaining the colour without losing details. I use a k10d and shoot raw. Does anyone know any good tricks?

I too migrated from Minolta/sony to Pentax and the K10D. I also miss release priority, and find it a bit strange that a camera at this level don't have it. But overall i'm very pleased. Above all i love the "feel" of the camera. And while many complain about its low light af performance and tracking (dis)ability, it is way, way better than the A100 and the KM 5D i had. I was also very happy to rediscover my old m-lenses. Now i understand why i never worried about wide open sharpness etc back then. They are just so damn good. I also like the K10D jpgs (surprised?) . Both from the sony and the minolta the jpgs were often too oversaturated, with clipped reds as a result. And way oversharpened with lots of sharpening artifacts. I thought i'd be shooting Raw all the time, but if the subjects aren't too complicated, the jpgs are just fine, and works very good in PP.

Hi!
Just got myself a k10d, body only, and now i need a walk around lens. I have been thinking about the sigma 18-50 2.8 ex dc macro. Does it communicate focal lengtht to the camera, so that the SR works properly?
I have also been thinking about the sigma 17-70, maybe combined with a fast prime, for low light situations. Is the 17-70 a lot worse (in terms of colour and IQ) than the 18-50? Some reviews and sample images seem to indicate that they are rather comparable. Some (photozone) even seem to think that the kit lens is just as good as the 17-70, at least in terms of resolution, maybe less so in terms of contrast.
What would you suggest?

Thanks!
I guess f4 and up was about what i expected... And it will probably be enough for me most of the time.
I used a split screen with my minolta 5d, and it was helpful, but it played tricks on the exposure meter. Everything from perfect to 2 stops overexposure. Is it the same with pentax?

Sorry to hear about your backfocus problem. But it is not difficult for the repair shop to sort that out. Good luck with that.
But provided that the af sensor is properly aligned, is the focus confirmation in the camera precise enough to work at least at 2.8?
