A NEW M42 LENS! TTArtisan 100mm f2.8!

I was super excited to finally mount one of these new Chinese lenses on my K-1. Any new options for K mount are a good thing, even if it's not a lens for everyone.

It's quite soft wide open, though on full-frame isn't as noticeable. When I was on my other DSLRs with crops it was more noticeable. But, it has that soft vintage touch that people like in certain situations. That's par for the course with what this lens is trying to achieve. You can read blog articles about lenses like the Meyer-Optik Trioplan 100mm F2.8 which I was told this lens is inspired by to learn what's going on optically here. I am not good with those technical terms.

I forgot to mention in the video, but contrast is also low at F2.8 (and overall for that matter), and bumping it up just a tad in post production makes a big difference. By F4 the lens sharpens up enough in my opinion, though it won't blow you away in resolution. Stopping further seems help, though I can't imagine too many people seeking this lens out for top resolution and to use stopped down all the time.

Some sample shots on K-1:

A fun modern take on a vintage lens, the price is right I think. Not a lens for everyone, and if you already have some vintage lens favorites it's probably unnecessary. But I'm just excited about this idea of "remakes" of vintage lenses that are getting harder and more expensive to dig up. And especially if I can mount them on my K-1 :)

Hope that's helpful to someone.

I was also on Instagram right when this was posted. It was already taken down by the time I tried to leave a comment. I didn't even think to screenshot it, but came here to see if someone else caught it.

There was some cool pics in there. A little place on the rear of the camera that said "monochrome" but besides that it looks pretty much the same as I can remember.

Very cool to see this project is actually coming to life.

Is the video quality on Pentax really that bad on 1080p 30fps?

Hello,

I have had a lot of experience shooting video on Pentax bodies in the exact use case you are questioning - sit down interview style. I did it as a way to save money. Since I already had a Pentax body, I did not want to buy another camera just for video. In this way the cameras do as they advertise. I am not actually very good at video so don't trust me that way but I can show you some practical results as someone who shot video on Pentax for over a year consistently.

The shots of myself in this video are recorded on the K-1 with an external mic feeding into the camera:

Different mic setup but still K-1

Pentax K-3 III recording 4k with external mic myself on camera:

Youtu.be

Pentax K-3 III recording 4k for broll of camera shots

Youtu.be

So can the Pentax cameras record usable video? I think so, especially for sit down shots and product shots and you can control the lighting as someone else said. I've struggled with lighting a lot but it makes a world of a difference.

That said, I would not buy a Pentax camera knowing I was going to shoot a lot of video. But if you want only one camera, and you want a Pentax for stills (I love Pentax so I get that ;) ), then you can make it work.

I have finally upgraded to a dedicated video camera setup, a $300 used Panasonic g85, and it's much better for a few reasons:
- Video quality is better at same resolutions
- easier to get colors looking right, no shadow mush, can color grade in post easier
- More video features, more frame rates, on screen histogram etc
- Video stabilization is much more natural looking
- Video autofocus is usable! (not so with the Pentax's)

Here's a video on the Panasonic g85 setup:

Youtu.be

Even a modern iPhone/Samsung will produce crisper video from my experience and should be considered if you already own one, but for sit down shots I still preferred the Pentax's large sensor and fast lenses I could put on it for the natural bokeh look. That depth of field in the end made the image look more professional than cleaner video without a blurred background. The smartphone's have a way to go in that regard.

Sorry that was long. Hopefully it was helpful. I think you already got some very good pointers from others here but wanted to chime in anyway.

Thanks,
-james

I really liked a number of these. You all have inspired me of new ways to shoot things. Even many of the ones that didn't make it on the list but were entered in the contest.

#9 has my vote for what I think they said in the original post was a in-camera double exposure, and a zoom in between shots! Never done that before. I think it meets the theme nicely. A normal walk down the street shot in a creative way :)

K5iis Tribute / My Experience Migrating from FF to APS-C & Back to FF

Great write up. Since I never owned the camera before it has been less of revisiting a camera and more of experiencing the camera I had always wanted but never had the chance to get. I jumped from the K200D to the K-3. I think the K-3 probably is still the better camera, but the k-5iis is no slouch and I think would've performed just as admirably for me. But everyone knows my OG K-3 is my favorite camera of all time :)

This has been my experience with the viewfinders as well. I bought the K-3 III back in January and have been rocking it ever since, but I just haven't found the viewfinder upgrade to be that big of a deal. This is going to be highly personal, so I appreciate that others will have different opinions. But like you, I have never felt like the older APS-C bodies had small viewfinders. 100% coverage, decent magnification. If I hold my K-3iii to my eye and then the k-5 and then back there's a clear difference - don't get me wrong. But when I pick up the camera out in the field it's never once felt like it's enhanced anything.

That wasn't supposed to come out negative  I think it's really cool that they built such a technically amazing viewfinder, and for some I've heard it's helped a lot. And if you're going to stick with DSLRs, better make the best dang OVF.

As for AF, I am pleasantly surprised with my K5iis. As long as there's sufficient light it's been snappy. I included shots of my kids on the swings to try to help illustrate that. That's one of my tests for any camera I try, and many cameras can't keep up with a kid on a swing. That was with the Pentax-F 100mm f2.8 macro too. Not exactly a fast AF lens. The big difference was when light levels drop, and then it just hunts like crazy. That's just an area that's really improved over the years I guess. Depends what you like to photograph as to whether that's a big deal or doesn't matter at all.

Really lovely pics. Shows off what the camera is capable of in the right hands ;)

I really like the camera. I wish I had a big trip coming up so I could really show off what it can do with landscapes. :) But there's plenty of old pictures taken with the camera for people to see.

Not sure if anyone cares, but figured I would report back that I got infinity focus working and published my 3D model so you can print yourself: Leica M to Pentax Auto 110 Lens Adapter For Ricoh GXR A12 M Module by snapppy - Thingiverse

It only works with the smaller 18mm and 24mm lenses because the others are too fat at the base to fit into the recess I made. At least with the GXR M mount module, there are some parts of the mount on the inside that are more narrow than the mount itself, so I couldn't make it larger.

Maybe one of you or someone browsing through the internet one day will stumble on this and find it a fun experiment like I have :D

Here is a collection of short wildlife clips I've recorded in the last few months of owning the Pentax K-3 III. All with DA* 300mm, all handheld with stabilization on (sorry, I know I know I should bring a tripod). Shot in 4k (YouTube should let you select 4k for quality, make sure you do if you're interested in that). All manual focus. At least with the DA* 300mm video autofocus was next to hopeless. For this use case manual makes more sense anyway.

Wanted to put this out for a while since people ask me about the Pentax K-3 III video capabilities. My take is that it's the best Pentax video yet :) :D

I also use it now for the broll of my other videos, which it does quite well at. Happy to not buy another camera just for that :)

I use something called a Bahtinov mask, which you can 3D print or order online for cheap in various forms. It works fantastic and has solved all my focusing issues.

Here's another shot from the same night, obviously the same subject, but stopped down to F5 instead of F4 and shot at 60 seconds instead of 40 seconds. I like it even better because I'm getting some starbursts on some of the highlights which makes for a nice look.

You've already seen some reports of astrotracer type 3, but I am here to add my witness that it works - really well! Some little finicky bits about it, but a very useful feature that is even simpler the GPS astrotracer setup (which I thought wasn't too bad either).

With DA* 300mm f4

F4, 40 seconds, 1600 ISO

I was actually getting nice looking shots around 60 seconds as well, but one of the fiddly bits is that it can fail to process if the exposure isn't just right. I was trying to balance having enough exposure to succeed in processing, but not blowout the highlights of the nebula. Tricky. If I dropped ISO too low it seemed to fail more often, so this was the sweet spot that seemed to work and wasn't too overexposed. This is just a single shot, and I imagine for some of these closer/brighter objects it might be tricky to stack shots for a longer integration without having the highlights blown out. I'm a newb at all this anyway, so those more experienced may have different ideas.

Looks awesome to me. I've had some good past attempts with the K-1, but still I don't think any that looked that good. Looking forward to see if astrotracer type 3 would work for it on the K3iii. Great work.

Here's a few more bird selections since I last posted. All with DA* 300mm.

Thanks! I would be interested to hear how it goes with the large and mighty 400. Hope you're enjoying the new camera.

Here's a Carolina Wren that just landed perfectly for me. Unfortunately, I was messing with settings and dropped the shutter too low for trying to hand hold the DA* 300mm + 1.4x. But the shake isn't too bad :)

A selection of images taken on the K-3 III with the DA* 300mm and some with 1.4x attached. I got the camera early January so I've had it just over a month now and things are going well :)

Some of y'alls shots are incredible! Something to work towards. Of course, you all have been getting good shots long before this camera too, so I know it's not just the new camera ;)

Okay, that's enough. :) Hope all is well.

This is a big plus for me when thinking about the K3III. I was pretty disappointed when it was announced without built-in GPS. I love astrotracer, and use it every chance I can get. It’s actually a pretty good workflow with the built-in GPS of the K-1 - but of course this sounds like it would be easier. I’ve also found it can be subject to not working sometimes, requiring repeated calibration. This seems even simpler and solves the K3III not having GPS for me. I don’t use it for tagging, just for astrotracer :)

I find these kinds of reviews helpful. I’m not a professional like he is, but it’s good to hear about a camera from someone who uses it as part of their job. Usually that means they are less focused on headline features and more on functionality, practical features and reliability of a camera. Which I feel like are the things Pentax generally excels at anyway. Always appreciate Albert’s contributions back to the Pentax community.
