You under-estimate the Pentax 1000mm f/8. Unlike the 500mm f/4.5 & 300mm f/4 (both soft at widest apertures), the 1000mm f/8 gives excellent results at all f/stops.
The Pentax 1000mm is more a telescope than a lens & 1000mm is only the beginning. Acceptable pictures are had with the lens at wide-open apertures AND a tele-converter! Stop it down just a bit & fine pictures are obtained. I've even stacked tele-converters! Again, stopped down somewhat, & spectacularly magnified fine photos will be yours.
Never used the APO tele-converters, but used on the Pentax 1000mm f/8, they would have to be a superb combination.
Yes, the Pentax 1000mm f/8, used to take pictures at 4000mm would be an excellent poor-man's super-telephoto..... but should not be as cheap to obtain as you think.
