Did you hear sound from K5 in video mode?

It's the drawback of having the stabilisation in the box rather than in the lenses.
if you think of adding an external sound recorder with mic mounted on a the hotshoe, you'll also need a supension system to prevent the noise to propagate to your recorder mic ()
I have a zoom H1 and i've had to make one cause without, the noise was much louder that with internal mic.
Even with suspension, on very quiet places, you'll always get the noise, cause there is a noise you can hear...

I've written my wishlist to pentax, the support seemed interested in such requests...

About k-5 vs Red, i believe you'll feel the real difference when you'll be at the color grading step, cause you'll get much more dynamics in the red Raw footage ( if you used raw)

I would be interested in a footage comparison anyway (k-5 vs red)

I've had the chance to play with some red epic (5k) footage...the quality looks to me like k-5 raw pictures (in terms of adjustments possibilities), but with 24 pictures/second :p

dead pixels:I've just tested the Gimbal' trick about hot/dead pixels this afternoon, in low light conditions and...it works ! ( it proves a firmware could make it systematic and reliable)
for those who did'nt read the whole thread: to benefit from pixel remapping in video, just set the k-5 in picture mode, activate the Live view, then switch to video mode, that's it !
Anyway thanks to kenyee for the links, i'll check boris on my old footage with dead/hot pixels, i know how to make it in AE, but i like make everything in premiere rather that switching from a software to another (even if interaction beetween both is very flexible, thanks to adobe)

stuttering:I think Lauren stated it's in the footage, but it could also look like a bad 25->24 conversion, Dave you are right
For those who use premiere, it's pretty simple to make 24 cleanly:

Create a sequence with correct resolution and target framerate ( ie 1920x1080 24 fps progressive-no field )
import you 25 fps footage , right click on it and "interprete footage" , conform to 24, that's all

Like that, all your footage will run 24fps in a 24 fps timeline.Time will be slowed down from about 4% which shouldn't be an issue except if you have to sync live sound from external recorder (you also have to slow down sound and harmonize to keep the tune).
As an info, here in France, and probably same in UK: master Tapes for TV broadcasting or commercial DVDs run at 25, when we do some masters from film material (24 fps in feature films) the conversion is made by running the 24 film footage at 25 ( so movies are broadcasted on tv 4% faster than in theaters).
You US guys have a 24->23.97->(30)29.97 , called a 3:2 pulldown, it's speed conservatie (0.1% difference) but creates additionnal fields.
Blurays and new tvs should harmonize all that stuff with a unique standard at 24 for movies, regular TV programs will keep the localized frequency.

PENTAX: I would like to write an email to pentax/ricoh to sum up all that stuff they could easily fix in video mode so they could compete with Canon on that field.
Are there some ppl interested to join me on that ?
It sounds like Ricoh are better in marketting than pentax was, it would be such cheap developments to bring k-5 to another level of competition (video prosumers)

Will try, sounds like the shutter speed trick with A mode.
typically the kind of stuff that (if it works) proves a firmware could solve the issue.
Theroretically, i believe the pixel remapping is done in post-processing for still pictures, don't know if the exmor can handle it realtime 25/s for videos.
Anyway, dead pixels are the kind of issue that is easy to solve in still pics (ligtroom autocorrects it), but a pain in video (if someone knows a premiere plugin that lets you correct dead pixel videos, i would like it, it's just a question of recreating a pixel by averaging 8 pixels around).

First, congrats LaurenOE for the great vids, sure the slider helps a lot for cinematographic-like sequences, it perfectly fits the subject you are filming, and gives life to those old buildings. (tehre seem to have small stutterings in some movements, are the movements like that or it's youtube encoding? do you use SR ( stab) when recording? )

About the original threafs question about K-5 vs 5D/7D, I have the chance to own a k-5 and have a 5D at work + lots of collegues using 7D for video purpose.

Here are the pro and cons:

pro:
-Mjpeg compression for pentax vs H264 for canon: the files are definitively bigger, but the quality is here, especially if you want to make post-production on your footage ( color correction, you can get stuff in the low level without too much compression artifacts), you could even try some green screen keying, should work better that h264.
honestly, for the pro, that's all , but so important. (no temporal compression in mjpeg also makes it less cpu consuming in editing softwares like premiere, all you need is a good mjpeg decompression codec, and good hard drives to keep the bandwidth, your cpu won't be hurt)
-k-5 doesn't seem to have problems with lights frequency ( which is the result of a con, shutter speed is auto)
-k-5 has built-in stabilization, functionnal in video, but some times movements are to hard to stabilize, and the result becomes crap, the counterpart of stab is what you see in the live view is a bit delayed, your actions sound to you like if you are drunk ( :) )
-the rolling shutter effects seem less visible on k-5

cons:
-on k-5 you can't adjust shutter speed (there is a trick to make it , but it sounds to me more of a legend that a real way of working, as it's not operable and reliable on real live recording context)
-on k-5 you can't adjust iso (same shit as shutter speed)
-you can only adjust aperture before you record, or let it auto (worst of all, cause it would change your DOF during the shot),
------>anyway you can lock the exposure to prevent the k-5 to try and autoadjust shutter/iso/aperture, globally the operating mode is to setup your shot, your aperture, light mesure mode (spot/global etc..), let the k-5 adjust iso and shutter, then lock exposure and start recording ( if you don't do that, exposure may change during recording, resulting to a camcorder-like looking footage)
If you have lenses with an aperure ring, you can use it when recording , k-5 will compensate exposure if you don't lock exposure, it's really fine with old prime lenses that all carry an aperture ring, a cheap 50M F2 becomes a killer lens for video, smooth focus ring, aperture ring, you'are set up.
-no 60fps mode, even in 720p
-1080p is only 25, not 24 or 30 for now ( i don't care, i'm in France, here it's 25 :) )
-no way of injecting custom color curves for video, but you can adjust the built-in ones ( on canon, you could build the color curve that applies to the sensor signal before it gets encoded, lots of people use some "log-like curves to prevent blacks and whites to be clipped, and compensate it in post-prod)
-file size is limited to 4GB, which makes short movies in fullHD mjpeg ( about 4/5 mins if i remember well), on canon there is not such limits and h264 offers a better size/duration rato
-SR ( stab), and the way sensor is carried n the box (center by electro magnetical system) is noisy, if you want to attach an external mic to the hotshoe (flash) mount, you'll have to buy a suspension system

same on both:
-no AF when recording (you can choose beetwen built in AF or contrast detection with zone setting on the live view, both work correctly , but real AF is better in low light, it just makes the mirror go down and up the time to focus)
->no one cares about that, real focusing on video is manual, and if you want smooth focusing, buy a follow focus gear :)
-no focus indication (some other brands -nikon?- have implemented a zebra functions that shows high details/contrast to help focusing) , it is sometimes hard to check fine focus on the built in screen , especially outside with small apertures
-no pixel remapping in video mode : you'll probably have hot/dead pixels and will have to live with it, 5D/7D also do, i don't think the remapping is possible real time in video( as they don't use all the sensor lines/rows in pentax, they could let us select which set of lines we use and see which has the least number of hot pixels, if i remember weel, in canon the image is the result of a mix of rows, so hot pixels are merged with correct one, nothing to do for them)
EDIT:Gimbal's trick works, remapping is possible in video, but it's a trick, a firmware could make it persistent
-sensor becomes very hot on both canon and pentax in video mode, and you will sometimes have to stop recording cause the heat sensor will stop it to protect it's sensor.
-32Khz mono audio recording ( mic input is stereo but still 32K) an external recorder is a good investment if you wan't real sound

As you can see, a lot of differences, but nothing that could'n be solved with new firmwares, i just wish pentax will understand how video mode is making the difference today for a lot of prosumers (you just have to see how much 5D/7D are used for indie/music videos /documentarys today)
In my opinion, the k-5 has better sensor with better dynamics ( even vs 5D really), better encoding for quality, it just lacks the basics features (iso/shutter setting) + 60fps 720p and 1080p 24fps + curve customization + a workaround to 4GB limitation ( back to back file recording), and it would jump a big big step vs canon.

Sorry the post is a bit long, but there is so much to tell about that beloved k-5 :)

also sorry for my bad english, I'm French

Actually I'm also head of techs of a big vfx, anim and post facilty :)
I'm a premiere users since Vpro 1 and I agree mjpeg support has been better in the past, even if it's hard to compare stuff, 10 years ago we were not trying to playback realtime full HD or 2K footage from a basic premiere on a PC, but it was working quite decently for sd dv and eventually sd mjpeg.

Currently, premiere pro cs5 and 5.5 do handle mjpeg avi k-5 footage natively on my PC home and work machines, but performances are not great.
I've found a mjpeg codec (not morgan, the one from accusoft) which gives impressive performances vs premiere embedded one (I can read full hd25 whith no rendering on my 4 year old single core2 quad machine) .
This lets me think that the way codec handles the avi can dramatically change the cpu usage, and the ability to playback real time on a given hardware.

I do all my personnal editing on cs5.5 on PC (win 7) and have never encountered any corruption with media encoder also :S strange
When I need editing on vacation, I do the same stuff on my macbook pro, and it works fine natively ( it's probably based on quicktime engine directly under mac), i'm only in trouble when i need to be in fullhd 25, cause the macbook old hardware struggles to play realtime.

Mjpeg is definitely the best for image quality (vs canon h264), but filesize and codec/software compatility ruins a part of it.

Just as an info, in production context, we do generate hundreds of quicktime .mov for internal dailies of visual effetcs or animation shots, and the optimal codec so artists can play frame by frame with no pain, directly from the network is....mjpeg :)
Believe it or not, but AVID, can't playback those mjpeg quicktime files....

OK, then it's codec related or your computer has limited cpu power to read such files ( full HD files are preatty heavy to read).
It could also be a bitpack problem as the software you use to repackage the file doesn't reencode but jst rearranges the way file is written.

I believe you guys have different issues.
Both of them imho are related to sound level peaks.
when it clics directly on the k-5, I would think of automatic gain control too slow to prevent unwanted noise (like wind) to be limited (my advise would be a simple test of blowing in front of the mic hole and see what happens).

When it makes noises once encoded, depending on the encoding software, I would tend to think it's also due to high levels that aren't handled correctly, a normalize on sound should solve this issue ( lower level also, but would loose dynamics).

Anyway, the internal mic sound is not intended to be used for accurate sound recording, like any DSLR , image is pretty good but sound is crap.

Look at all the guys who make indie movies, or documentary with 5Ds or 7Ds, they never use internal mic, they have at least an external mic plugged in, but most of the time they use external recorders then sync back image and video, using the intenal mic sound as a sync reference.

you've just spawned a 4 monthes old thread..

I your read my last post, about peak levels, and consider limiting the sound level in software that generates clics, it would help you to know if it's a codec issue or just a sampling issue ( when you convert to another codec, sound is eventually resampled , fos ome reasons it is posible yor source sound peaks just to 0db, and some audio codec couldn't handle it).
Maybe Windows movie maker has an automated feature of sound limiting/compression tht avoids the problem, don't know.
There may also be something related to the resampling caused by 32Khz sources->44/48 encoding ( K-5 embedded audio is 32khz mono).

On another point of view, I ve bought a zoom h1 external recorder with mics to record quality sound.I've a flash hot shoe mount, if i put the h1 directly on the shoe mount, I hear a lot of noise coming from the SR (and I confrm it's not static pops, it's a low frequency sound).I've had to make an adapter with suspension mount so SR noise is not transmitted to the recorder.

I just have a small canon selphy 10x15 (cm) for family purpose.
As I' work for cinema post production, I have access to a range of color probes so my screens are calibrated.
Last time I also tried to create a profile for my printer, believe it or not, the result was closer to my screen ...without the profile :) so I gave up.
For profesionnal stuff i would consider selecting a pro lab, and have them print a set of charts , then measure it to create a profile, and finally us the profile for soft proofing.

Grainy Pix with K-5

There is still no exif in your jpegs, hard to track what is going wrong.
Is the picture directly from the K-5 with no correction (except resize in a software that doesn't preserve exif)?
the first looks indeed more grainy than what i would expect with such settings (I don't know your particular lens, but F16 is not necessary the sharpest aperture, when it's too much closed, you can have some diffraction that limits shaprness, but should'nt bring noise anyway)

here is another example, as the k-5 can accept underexposures ( at 100iso) you just have to expose the sky and clouds correctly, forget about the real scene ( here a castle) and hope there is not too much stops beetween sky and scene.
then in LR use fill light, iso, brightness , black level to setup a correct image (you can make it from nice to HDR :) )

Please no artistic consideration about this pics, it's only to show how dark the raw footage can look like and what you can finally get
( the first is the raw directly convrted to jpeg in LR, the second is corrected ( and yes i've also removed the birds=black dots in the raw).
And it's not symmetrical:means you can't overexpose sky and get it back in PP.

Movie mode and old manual lenses?

You don't need as much sharpness as photography as the maximum definition is like 1/4 of your photos (max 1920x1080 vs 4000+), and some (short) out of focus moments are acceptable in video while it's not in photo.

If you shoot wide open (F2/F2.8) you may have difficulties to stay focused cause the DOP will be very short, and the screen is not always big enough to see if your focus is perfect.
But you'll get such beautiful videos, you'll forget about it.
If you shoot at like f8 or more, focusing becomes easier, and you could just rely on the distance printed on the lens instead of watching closely the screen.

A fully manual lens is perfect as the k-5 will adjust the exposure while you open/close aperture which brings a feature you won't have with auto lenses (you can only adjust aperture before shooting, or let it auto which is bad).

Manual focus is really easier with large adjustment range vs autofocus lenses where focusing ring is not really intended to be used :).

I have a ricoh M50F2 and a smc pentax A50F2, the 2nd one is supposed to be much better than the 1st, but believe it or not, i prefer the ricoh, cause the focus ring has a different range which makes it easier/quicker to focus, and i run both in M mode so i keep a hand on the aperture while shoot. for info ricoh=20€ smc=50€ ( and they are killer primes for video)

I like the way the k-5 behaves when you turn the aperture ring while shooting, it adjusts but is overexposed during a short moment which looks like 35mm movie film camera stops (white flash), very nice...

The only lack of k-5 to me is you can't adjust iso/shutter in video for now ( and a 48/60 fps 720p for slow mo experimentations)

So it may be related to peak levels which would not trigger the internal limiter ( agc?)
when a analog to digital converter has to convert signals higher that the maximum, it is supposed to create such "pop/clic"
Could you try in your quiet room to blow on the mic hole and see if you get the wind sound associated with static noise.
If yes, it would confirm a link with high level sounds, maybe there is something inside your k-5 like a mic filter which is not correctly in front of the mic itself.
In any case the internal limiter should avoid that, I've checked some of my vids while i was running with the K-5 , I have some wind sound, but no static noise.

anytime, if you just want to check speed:
set af-c to priority fps
mode m, set shutter speed to 1/1000 or more ( we don't care about exposure)
set burst mode to quickest

Press the button , keep it pressed and listen to the clic clic clic
It should go 7 fps and stop after a while (less than 20 pics if i remember well) for raw files, and until the card is full for jpeg.
I you care about the shutter count, don't play it too much cause you could add 100 shutter clics in a few seconds.

your k-5 is probably defective
I would just advise to check it with another SD as mentioned.
Another thing you could try is avoid the wind noise with a piece of tissue or something, and see if it has any link with the static noise ( the wind noise could generate high level peaks )
do you have the static noise if you record in a silent room ?
If yes, even with another card, no additionnal grip, flash, anything, and original full battery, then ->warranty return
