best portrait lens pentax ever made

I guess as kaiser mentioned it also depends if you are using a medium format, 35mm full frame (film/non-pentax) or cropped (digital) bodies :D
Curious why u never mentioned any Taks in the usual suspects :D I personally love the takumars, but maybe due to their razor sharp characteristics they aren't that suitable for portraits, only ones I can think of are the SMC Takumar 85mm 1.9's
50-55mm's work well on the cropped bodies too :o and they are capable of up to f1.2 :)

Lenses suggestions for K-5???

If u can, get the K5 with the 18-55 kit lens. It's a really good performer for the price that fits all your needs.
If you are having only $800 for lens budgeting, you are better off getting the kit + a longer tele lens that can help with the reach you may want.
If you are a Zoom person you can go 50-200mm but the IQ at the far reaches are not something to brag about.
I'd personally suggest the DA70mm for the second lens.

As far as urban photography is concerned, you wanna grab architecture and sometimes stuff across the street. a 35 can barely hit both spectrums of that requirement. And if you're not a pixel peeper or anal about IQ the 18-55 should grab most of your details nicely. And if you are looking at urban artistic shots, the DA70 should suffice (unless you expect to be shooting 3-5 meters off subject, else anything further wont give u any bokeh worth mentioning)

But take my recommendation with a pinch of salt as I dont own a DA70 but would love to ;x Still contemplating on DA70, FA77 and some MF 85's myself ...

I hardly believe it helps to counter the mentality of it all :) Forum-fed mass hysteria, definitely ;) While it may ultimately affect your choice to purchase it, I can't imagine anyone not wanting a lens with a reputed pixie dust 3d effect on their camera.

Thats some nice colors going on in that picture :) love that pink hair!

But in all honesty, despite reviews, rants and pricing issues.
Every pentax fan boy will want/aim to own/use the FA31 once in their life, even if its just for a day.
If they don't they are either in denial, and this urge even exists in Canon Nikon and Leica shooters.

If u can even consider a refurbished k7 you should consider a second hand k-5. getting a body off a impulse buyer can be liberating for both parties :) who knows u can get some of the lenses together from people who are dumping the whole system altogether.

Do you have any other camera bodies to test it on?
Have u swapped lenses and checked to verify if its a lens specific issue or body issue? :x

Just a suggestion for troubleshooting :)

Haha sorry I didn't mean to call it a landscape lens per se, but yeah I get what u mean :) I mean architecture because in singapore, most of our more accesible landscape IS architecture :P

Ron: Yup I actually considered the 15mm but as I dont do as much landscape as I would want to and its more walk about and casual events im torn between the 70/77 or the 31 as mentioned, to add the 100mm WR has sparked interest due to its macro capability as well as its long reach :D

John: Yeah I know IQ as a secondary concern is eye twitching but considering I don't do prints, or shoot for portfolios, Im resolving my Raws into JPG's at 720px sharpened for Facebook, but mainly also because the IQ on the current DA line lenses are really good already (70mm matches the 77 really well) and the FA's are gonna be legendary anyway (since the few lenses i wanna get are either DA or FA they seem to be all well taken care of by Pentax's in-house QC)

Far: I agree man, that 100mm Macro is just pulling me to the dark side, my mum has been bugging me to shoot some photos of her garden and flowers. Thats probably the next lens after I decide on this one :P

abacus: yeah haha I just coincidentally realised that there was such a incremental difference and played along :P I guess I just need to cover the most lacking perspective :P

paperbag: Oh yeah 77's have that nice render of portraits, though budget skews to the 70 haha ... Looks like i'll have to fight this in my head.

legacy: hehe nice I like your 70mm shots :P your kids are beautiful too haha!

For now its going tough between the 70 and 77mm but that can probably be read in another article, but as paperbag mentioned, the 85mm's are strong contenders and I've been shooting on my manual 50mm/135 and 200mm's so I'm actually also comfortable with that option ... I just wonder, is 85 too much reach? then again what IS too much reach :P guess ill have to factor the use cases of the lenses and make fair judgment :D

Thanks everyone :))

Hi guys I have a question I wanna ask, for a walkabout setup to shoot both casual portraits and artistic inanimate objects what lens should I add to my current collection?

I carry my DA21 and FA43 more often than not, given that these 2 sit nicely in my bag I have space for another and though I had fun with my 50/1.4 i'm not inclined to take it out due to the aperture ring becoming loose (though a 43 and a 50 in the same bag is overkill to me). I have a couple of tele primes but i'd rather not take them out unless needed (135/200mm) if space is a principle consideration with IQ coming up next.

What is a recommended focal length/lens to attribute the current 2? (Im thinking a 70mm/77mm and to pick outta these 2 is a whole new thread :P)

And by now you should have picked up that I don't use zooms :)
On a side note an dream perfect 7 collection to have would be a 10mm UWA, DA21mm, FA31mm, FA43mm, 55mm, Hartlei 65mm TS, FA77mm haha (super OCD must be at least 10-12mm apart)

Deib: You might also wanna take note that monochrome photos like what boone did are generally more pleasing to the eye because there aren't color reproduction issues to worry about. And its easier to bring out certain details using colored filters :) If a generic colored photo isn't required, some photos look awesome in B&W/monochrome ;)

Deib:

I popped the image to CS5, started to remove the lines at the back first, tried using content aware fill (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt). If auto fill doesnt work, ill usually grab a brush and dab the nearest color drop the opacity to 10-20% and start drawing over with a decent brush size that can cover the line at least, then ill work to blend both colors together with a layered gradient over the more obvious portions, then use a eraser brush at 10% opacity and slowly remove the more obviously unfitting colors. u gotta mix and match adding and removing til u get the right shades.

For facial clean up, the Healing Brush tool works fine. Hold ALT down and select a region you want to copy, and then when u let go you can attempt to replace the spot you are clicking with the copied portion, do note that colors that are too far apart dont work too well as they smudge big time and are often unusable when that happens.

Next to brighten up areas like the bottom left and right areas (esp left) i generally try to lasso tool the areas that are severely underexposed and do a contrast/brightness tweak to match the surrounding alittle more. I drop a radial white gradient on the darker areas in a new layer and then set the blending option to soft light (adjust the opacity to your liking)

I lasso'ed the teeth and dropped the saturation so that they dont show the yellowish color, then i change the tint alittle to it remains naturally white (make sure that they still look alright beside the gums.

As for overall color of the subject, I lasso the portions i want to edit, usually the whole person, and i play with levels/curves often ending up with darker blacks and brighter whites on levels (pull the left arrow and right arrows inwards alittle, u gauge) and then the curves would resemble a S tilted to the right alittle (though no so round, more gradual)

Lastly I crop the photo because its generally better to work with more colors and natural photo pixels/objects as they contain the natural colors of the scene.

My PP is still way behind the pro's but it gets me by most of the time :)

I used photoshop to tweak the photo alittle and recropped the dark areas of the first photo, did some work to the blemishes but at this resolution it actually doesnt make that much of a difference :) Lemme know what u think :D

Nah sam the hood is just the part that looks wider than the whole barrel. that extra protrusion that looks like part of a hood is in fact part of the the lens body. the ring just denotes where the focusing barrel can contract until. when fully extended through focus it can go a tad longer :)

Or if you are generally getting shots that are too bright for your taste, you can press the +/- button and underexpose your shots by an EV or so to compensate. This is more of tricking the metering system to your liking.

But as the above posters mentioned, its better to shoot knowing what settings gets you best. Most of the time I prefer Manual Settings when it comes to night, especially when scenes differ in lighting and you probably have a better gauge than your sensor :)
