So, the K1 has clean HDMI out... but does the K3iii, that's the question.

I know the history of the file size limit (I believe the relevant tax regulation is no longer in place) and I understand the limits are probably still in place for in camera recording.
Clean HDMI out means being able to remove all overlays (battery indicator, numerals, digits, levels, etc) from the hdmi output when the camera is NOT recording, so one can record on an external device (like an Atomos recorder). It would not necessarily be at the full resolution & framerate the camera is capable of recording internally.

I'm primarily a photo shooter, but I occasionally record concerts where I need over an hour recording time without breaks.
Does anyone know if the K3III has clean HDMI out for external recording? I assume the time limits for in camera recording are still 25 or 30 minutes...

If the lens was already available in that mount, the R&D budget is irrelevant. For new products, you're completely right, but not existing ones.

When I bought my K-7 new almost ten years ago, its video capability was on par, or ahead of other brands, and one of the reasons why I chose that camera.
It's also one of the reasons I haven't upgraded. I STILL use my K-7 for all the serious photography that I do... and I use it for more video shooting than when I first bought it.
I would actually like to upgrade at this point (for a variety of reasons), but none of the newer models have offered me a compelling enough improvement in video features (they took away real video SR! AARGH) to make the leap. I can't afford to switch systems... so I'm still waiting.
Obligatory recent photo with the K-7. :) |

Looks like they are trying to cash in on the extra sales colorful camera bodies produced without getting criticized for making "toy cameras".
...I always liked their colourful cameras. Thought the criticisms were silly and it would have been fun to have one. My K7 won for features though. :)

Macro photography was why I wanted an ILC. I bought the non-WR version at the same time as my first SLR. I started filling out my bag when I went digital. Every lens has its place, but the 100/2.8 is my favorite, and the one I always come back to.

If you upgrade, you will be able to keep your KDE desktop (at least, if Mint handles upgrades the way Ubuntu does). It is only an issue if you do a fresh installation, and even then, there is nothing stopping you from setting up your desktop environment of choice (that's the beauty of using Linux, right?).
I went from KDE to XFCE on Ubuntu this year. It is lighter to run than KDE and less flashy looking, but has similar functionality. "Application Finder" placed in the task bar is a reasonable replacement for launch menu searching, which was the only thing you miss immediately upon switching.

Doesn't have TILT, only SHIFT... just like my Laowa.
As I mentioned in my reply to @zjacreman there is also the Schneider 28/4.5 T/S
Here was the listing for it on B&H: Schneider PC-TS Super-Angulon 28mm f/4.5 HM Aspheric 06-1075956
Nearly impossible to find, but they DO exist. I remember someone posted a picture of one in a thrift shop here on the forums a while back.

A tilt shift lens is on my never-going-to-actually-buy-it wish list of specialty lenses I can't justify (along with an anamorphic lens)...
I actually OWN a shift lens though, as I bought the Laowa 15/4 for its macro capabilities earlier this year, so I've been having fun playing with my half-a-tilt-shift since then.
I know Schneider optics made a (disgustingly expensive) T/S in K-mount that was listed on B&H for a while, but the one that would actually be a possibility for me if I ever decided I really needed one is the Rokinon 24/3.5.
I assume you are aware of the Rokinon and want something different though? I am curious what you'd like to see made available. (I'd like a macro T/S most definitely) ---------- Post added 10-20-18 at 12:11 PM ----------
This simply isn't true. I shoot Pentax, and there are LOTS of things I appreciate about it, but the "things they don't do" absolutely affect me. I haven't upgraded from my K-7 because I am only going to able to afford ONE upgrade over the next 15 years or so (and I definitely can't afford to replace all my lenses by switching systems), so I am waiting for one that will cover my video needs. I shoot dogs and children and nature (flora, fauna, landscape, etc), and I am looking forward to better AF when I someday replace my camera. I will get a boost regardless, but I would absolutely benefit from it if they "catch up" to the other brands by the time I'm ready to buy.
...and the lack of marketing also affects me. Not because I need to see ads to know they exist, but because I used to able to go into my local Henry's any try lenses and bodies, and now I can't. I'd never even be using Pentax if it hadn't been there in the brick and mortar store when I was looking for my first SLR.

Weight (and size):
FF - Sony 12-24mm f/4 - 565 g
FF - Sigma 12-24mm f/4 - 1.15 kg
Crop - Pentax 12-24mm f/4 - 431 g
Crop - Nikon 12-24mm f/4 - 465 g
The same reason why, when I held a friend's FF camera in my hands, I knew it was not for me.
Sharing the same mount doesn't mean that they shouldn't build lenses that take advantage of the benefits of one system... it just makes moving around within the Pentax ecosystem easier - no adapters, no rebuilding your lens collection if you go from APSC to FF... upgrades, down grades, dual systems - everything works.

The only reason they designated some FF lenses as DA (rather than DFA) is because they didn't offer a FF digital camera until the K1, so ALL their new lenses were meant for APS-C, whether they covered a larger circle or not.
I would not expect any new DA lenses to properly cover FF - they will be DFA if they do.

The back LCD will go black if it is showing you a picture preview (live view or video mode) and there is not enough light. You won't see stars in the preview, because the exposure times required are multiple seconds, even with a fast, wide-open lens and high ISO.
Set your shutter speed to 30 seconds, focus on infinity and take a test shot, and you'll start to get an idea of what you're working with.
One other tip... run pixel mapping before you start. This will clean up most of the hot pixels, which can otherwise ruin your shot.

You're trying to pick between a faster lens, and the focal length you actually NEED (35mm) but there is an option that actually does both that you're not considering.... the FA 35mm f2
I was fortunate enough to pick up mine before the K-1 was announced and demand went up...
It is more expensive than the DA, but still a lower cost lens, and the difference between f1.8 and f2 isn't much.

I'm still shooting with my nearly 10-year-old K-7... I imagine I have some patience left.
I'm primarily a stills shooter, but video was a selling point when I bought the K-7. I use it at a lot of music events. The time limits mean watching the camera like a hawk to start and stop recordings at just the right moment to catch the whole piece (and often failing). Clip length and overheating is as much of a problem as the recording limits themselves, I have it set to standard def rather than HD to get an extra 2 minutes out of it. I don't think any of the Pentax cameras start new clips at the 4 GB mark like the competition, at least not that I've heard... that would need to change too for usability.

I would look at it from a long-term perspective.
Unless Pentax goes under, they are going to keep bringing out improved cameras. The next APSC camera they make will always be a step up... it will definitely focus faster and have a bigger buffer than your K3ii.
You like the Pentax system... and you will pay more by switching, but you'll get focus improvements several years earlier every time you upgrade. Pentax will get you there too, but you'll always be behind where you could be. So it comes down to how much you care about being on the leading edge.

I also use my top LCD extensively, and would be loathe to give it up. That said, the crippled one on the K-1 does not appeal to me - I need the EV compensation scale for it to be really useful.
As I side note, the top LCD on my K7 gave me a new reason to be impressed this year... I set up a camera trap with it outside for a couple days in the winter. The camera got litterally iced over, and the back LCD stopped working (until I brought it in to warm up), but the camera was still functional, and the top LCD kept going so I could dial in settings and keep using it.

This is some promising news. I doubt there will be anything stemming from it at photokina though - it is too soon, and they've obviously been building up hype for a new GR. I would be very surprised if it was something else.

Which is why I said I don't mind having to buy an external recorder. You can circumvent this limit in other devices as long as they have clean video out. Removing the overlays is a software change, requiring no new technology.
I know Pentax isn't focusing on video, but even then they are offering little upgrades to video capabilities with each new release. I even recall promises from when the KP came out that they were going to do a firmware update in the KP & K1 to bring back real SR in video mode. It got forgotten about, but it shows what they were thinking about at least.
All that said, I really wouldn't be that surprised if clean video out appears in their next release.
