why K5

When I started looking into replacing my Canon EOS DSLR system, the K5 and the Limited lenses were my key reason to move to Pentax. Mind you, I have used Canon EOS for more than 20 years, I know all about the L lenses, they are fantastic, but they are heavy. After 20 years, I wanted less weight, compactness, and simplicity of the Limiteds. I have tested the micro 4/3 system from Panasonic for a while, but I am not much into video, and the whole thing was a bit too much on the gizmo side. Again, very nice lenses, and compact, even now, Olympus have released two new wonderful prime lenses.

Today I have settled on the DA 15, the DA 35 macro, and the DA 70. The consistency of these DA Limiteds, the fact they share many things in common, again, it all points to that ethos of keeping it simple and down to the essential. I have chosen the DA 15 for wide angle landscapes, the DA 35 macro for general walkabout and the occasional nature/macro shot, and the DA 70 for portraits and landscape abstracts.

Walk Around Prime Advice

This will depend on what focal length you will require. There are many lenses that will give you the "normal focal length", or close to it. I have used the Sigma 30 in Canon ÊOS mount, it is a good lens. But IMO it is just too big for the K5 ethos (small camera to be used with small primes).

I would go for the 35 macro limited, in fact, I am waiting for the arrival of one:)

Concerns about quality/reliability

Cameras are like any other tools, they can break. Cars break, toasters break, microwaves break, radios break, and so on and so forth.

This stuff is built in assembly lines, within a certain tolerance for "errors", say 1%. So, if Pentax builds say 100,000 K5s a year, statistically it means that 1000 cameras will be faulty. Maybe you will read 1000 posts questioning Pentax's quality control, and will never read the 99,000 owners of K5s who never had a problem.

Do I need DA15mm?

Photography is about compromising. Of course the zoom will be larger and heavier than the 15 Ltd. But it gives you flexibility that the 15 Ltd is not capable of. No body can decide but you. Say you sell the zoom and get the 15mm lens; maybe in a few weeks time you will be missing the flexibility provided by the zoom?

I think that if you need to ask, then you do not need the lens.

Are Pentax even trying?

That was a good and informative reply from the article's author. Basically, the magazine contacts the distributor, and then the distributor decies/chooses what lenses to provide for the review. This is normal practice. What would be interesting to know as well, was if the distributor actually had any Pentax prime lenses in stock?

This is just a reflection of Pentax' lack of market penetration; the same thing happens in Portugal where I live). There is hardly any Pentax kit in photo stores, besides the usual kit packages. If you want to buy something other than a Pentax kit lens, there is nothing in stock. You either order it via the shop, or order it from a foiregn shop with internet presence. I was recently in London, and lo and behold, the normal high street photo stores hardly have anything Pentax as well.

In the end, I would not fault the magazine, after all, people tend to forget about you if you do not have visibility. Actually, did the same article featured prime lenses from Zeiss, Voigtlander, Leica? From my experience, french photo magazines do tend to feature balanced articles, where Pentax kit is regularly featured and compared to others, including prime lenses.

These are very different focal lengths, and besides, these two lenses have very different characteristics. What do you plan to photograph with them?

My K5 also overexposes with my 31 Limited. At first I was a bit surprised, but then it is easy enough to adjust.
