Mirror lens vs teleconverter better?

The 28-200mm is f/5.6 at the long end. With a 2x teleconverter that's f/11 which will make it very hard for the autofocus to work.

Mirror lenses are bulky rather than heavy, and I think they're all manual focus. You're aware of the doughnut shaped out-of-focus highlights from a mirror lens?

No!

Its trigger voltage appears to be 185V, but why not measure it and make sure for yourself?

I generally use the Botzilla website for this info:
Photo Strobe Trigger Voltages

Not that the Sunblitz is listed...

Will an "M" series lens work on the K-r?

It's not the mirror which cycles when you press the green button, it's the aperture that stops down to your chosen value so that the light meter can take a reading. That's why the viewfinder goes dark. Note that's dark, not black, unless you've chosen f/32 indoors in a room with only one bulb!

If the mirror flipped up the light meter wouldn't get any light at all.

I don't see a reason to give up, there are quite a few that fit, for example (from wikipedia):

Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenogon 35mm f2 (2006-) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-FA 1:2 35mm AL, 1999-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 AF (2007- ) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL, 2004- )
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 100mm MACRO 1:2.8 (2007-) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-D FA 1:2.8 100mm MACRO, 2004-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenogon 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 ED (2007- ) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA FISH-EYE 1:3.5-4.5 10-17mm ED (IF), 2006-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 12-24mm f4 ED (2007- ) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA 1:4 12-24mm ED AL (IF), 2005-)
Schneider-Kreuznach D-Xenon 50-200mm f/4-5.6 AF (2006-) (rebadged SMC PENTAX-DA 1:4-5.6 50-200mm ED, 2005-)

There may be others.

If it has an "A" position on the aperture ring it can't be M42.

Is it the camera or the lens cuasing this?

That's a good point actually. Is the unexposed part on the left or right (shutter curtain problem) or at the bottom (sticky mirror)?

I've had that on an MX with a slightly sticky mirror.
