Hi Lesmore49,
I realize this thread is old, and you likely already obtained your light meter. I just wanted to say that I went with a Gossen GO H264A Sixtomat F2 Light Meter over the equally fine Sekonic L-308C-U mainly because of the smaller form factor, and slightly lower cost. Gossen's reputation is, IMHO, comparable to Sekonic, and they both take a single AA battery, which is most convenient. Another cool feature of the Gossen is that it has no On/Off switch...just position the dome for incident/reflected or flash, and fire a test shot, either manually or via Sync cord. Have fun! Regards, Steve

Greetings! Well, I have the Pentax 16-45 (among other superb Pentax optics), and am frankly torn between keeping it or selling it for the Pentax 17-70, just for the longer reach. My BIG concern is Sharpness. I am pleased with the sharpness of my 16-45 on my K-5, and obviously want equal or better sharpness from the 17-70, but I've read many conflicting reports on this issue. Indeed, the Pentax forums rate the 16-45 a bit higher on sharpness than the 17-70, which I assume is related the the single ED element in the 16-45 that is not in the 17-70. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Ideally, I'm looking at selling the 16-45 and a beautiful Pentax DA*55 f/1.4 to finance a Sigma 8-16 and the Pentax 17-70 for an upcoming trip to California. (I want to travel as "light" as possible.) Thanks all, for your lens expertise!

Nice shots! I am pretty much convinced that the Pentax 17-70 is a good lens. However, I'm still not sure if it is sharper than the Pentax 16-45 at a given aperture/focal length! My copy of the 16-45 is quite sharp on my K-5 (for a zoom). I just wanted the reach of the 17-70, while not sacrificing sharpness. Thank you.

Thanks for your links and comments! That's an interesting choice of lenses, the 16-45 and the 70. Of course, I really think the Sigma 8-16 would be fantastic for such a venue! I obviously have to think on this a bit more before making a decision

Greetings! I am going to experiment with HDR with my K-5, and have a question please…
I set the Raw/FX button for Exposure Bracketing. I have Drive Mode set to "Exposure Bracketing + Remote".
With the camera on a tripod, after pressing the Raw/FX button to access Exposure Bracketing setting, how can I use the IR Remote to keep the shutter release held down until the chosen number of exposures is captured? (I would think I can just press it once, and the camera will fire the desired number of exposures (5) sequentially.) But so far, I’m only getting a single exposure with each press of the IR Release. I hope I don’t need a “wired” release to do this.
Thank you,
Steve

Greetings! I too, have a similar dilemma...I own a K-5 with some nice Pentax glass, i.e., DA*55, FA43 Ltd, DA16-45, DA50-200. I'm planning a trip to San Francisco, and want the following for specific scenes: Pentax 17-70, and Sigma 8-16. I understand that the Sigma 8-16 has stellar image quality in terms of sharpness and field of view. If you check my site (totalqualityphoto), you'll see that I'm very much into sharpness and detail. My problem is that I must sell either the DA*55 and/or the 16-45 to help finance the 8-16. (I really don't want to part with any of these lenses.) Would you recommend the Sigma 8-16. especially considering the aforementioned Quality Control issues with Sigma? I have always been an OEM guy, always using camera-brand lenses because I always thought that they offer the best in terms of build and optical quality, but I could be wrong. Thank you for any advice!

I'm planning a trip to San Francisco, and want the following for specific scenes: Pentax 17-70, and Sigma 8-16. Does anyone have experience with these 2 lenses? I'm particularly wanting to know if the 17-70 is appreciably sharper than the 16-45, in general. If you check my site (totalqualityphoto), you'll see that I'm very much into sharpness and detail. That's good to hear, Britt! I am still thinking I should sell my 16-45 and go with the Pentax 17-70. I plan to also acquire a Sigma 8-16 to cover the ultra-wide end. I figure the 8-16 and 17-70 would be a nice travel kit with my K-5.

Well, after much research, I may take my chances with the Pentax 17-70, only because of the great alleged sharpness at mid focal lengths and apertures, plus the longer reach compared to my 16-45. I may also go with a Sigma 8-16 for ultra-wide, and take a Pentax prime such as the 43 or 70 pancake. (The DA* 16-50 and 50-135 will have to wait!:-^)

Man, I have the Pentax 16-45, but after reading the photozone (and other) review of the Pentax 17-70, have decided to sell my 16-45 for the supposedly build and optically superior Pentax 17-70. However, I don't have teh time (or patience) to play "lottery" with lens Quality Control! I am seriously hoping that Pentax gets it right with me on the first try! (I do have other Pentax optics such as the FA43, and DA 70 Limited, both outstandingly sharp lenses, so I know Pentax lens quality can be up with the best!

Greetings.
THanks for all the good advice! Judging from the review of the Pentax 17-70 on Photozone ("At 17mm and 24mm the center performance is superb and the border quality is easily on a very good level. At f/4 the extreme borders are a little softer at 17mm but stopping down resolves the problem."), I think I will go with this one. I expect it will surpass my nice Pentax 16-45 in most respects.

Paul,
Yes, I'm considering selling my mint Pentax 16-45, for the Pentax 17-70, simply for the extra reach for an upcoming trip. If the 17-70 is as good as my 16-45, particularly for sharpness, I'll be a happy camper!

Greetings!
Well, I think that most folks here have a better "travel" kit than me, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway...
Pentax K-5 and
Option 1: 16-45, 50-200, 43 Ltd.
Option 2: 16-45, 70 Ltd.
Option 3: 16-45, DA* 55
My dilemma is in deciding which of the above is the best option for an upcoming trip to San Francisco. Obviously, I'll want a wide angle for Golden Gate and Redwood shots, which is why the 16-45 is pretty much a given, since it's my "widest" lens. Dilemma number 2 is whether to travel "light", i.e., a 3-lens kit, without a tripod, and my small camera bag, OR with a tripod and my larger Tamrac Evolution 6 bag.
Anyone with experience in San Francisco photography, I'd be interested in hearing your suggestions. thank you, and good luck!
