My buddy Mike and I rode through West End, NC last week and it seemed like an interesting old town so I went back at dawn this morning to walk around and take some pictures. Its a modern day ghost town. The first place is the old West End Millwright and Crane Inspection School, followed by some old misc buildings, one may have been a bank, an abandoned home and a auto parts/cycle repair shop joined to a theater. Very cool. I had my new 50mm and the 12-20mm with me this morning.

Switched between Av (aperture priority) and manual this morning but spent most of the time on manual. However, having an AF 50mm now is pretty nice!

This is the start of the Millwright and Crane Inspection School.

Walking around the back side of the plant

Some things just ask for black and white.

Love the weathering.

Playing with the 12-20mm.

No one likes truckers.

Love it when the light does its thing.

I almost climbed up to the roof, but since I was already trespassing, I decided not to push my luck. A pig gets fat, a hog gets slaughtered.

This kind of captures the feel of the whole town.

New place. A collection of three old buildings. I think this is an old kerosene pump.

Love the sun in the morning.

Nice and frosty this morning.

This old house was nearby.

And now to the cool place that had the back door open.

This was open, but not for business.

All moldy and decrepit.

Awesome.

No one reads anymore.

I pushed open a door in the auto parts store and found the theater and this old piano.

I think its a little out of tune.

If I was going to take more than photographs, the legs of that piano would have been gone!

New AF 50mm for Christmas!!! Hooray!! I thought about getting the 1.4 but wanted to try the 1.8 first as I've had the 1.4 and took it back to get the 12-20mm instead. I'm happy so far even though 1.4 had a more quality feel. The 1.8 is a bit light and fragile feeling.

Woof!

Just playing.

Some bracelets I made my wife out of UK currency. Well, the top one is my practice one out of US nickels.

My photographin' wife!

Then we hit an indoor rock climbing place yesterday.

Kit 18-55mm on these.

My daughter in action. Couldn't get any other shots since I was her belay person the rest of the day!

Me doing a little 'bouldering'!

Beaner.

What we need is some rope. Is that right Rambo?

Why yes Daddy, I am comfortable.

Went out a little these past couple days. Still manual 50mm.

My wife dialing in the settings of her new Canon T3i, which we later returned and got a Canon 60D for her instead. Its a replacement for the K7 she broke because neither one of us really liked it. Required too much fussing to get some good off the frame.

Stuff was still in bloom.

Really wanted to take him home.

A little sunlight painting.

Woof.

Making a mulling spice tincture out of mulling spices (duh) and a German Apfel Liquer. This will go into the cider I've got sitting in primary!

Manual 50mm and a little post-processing. Momma says I will get an AF 50mm for Christmas - hooray!

While not one of mine, nor a Malteser Weissbier (it's a New Holland Black Hatter Black IPA), it still looks like perfection in a glass.

Went to my daughter's orchestra concert tonight, she plays cello and was awesome!

And I took a picture of the wall at her school because I liked it.

I appreciate the suggestion!

Yeah, its a bit overwhelming but it works for me. I've recently stumbled on to smugmug and keep things a bit more organized in albums there, this is just a catchall of everything I've done that I like. Thanks for looking though!

And so I replied, "Listen. I came into this world screaming and covered in someone else's blood and I have no problem going out the same way,"

Went to the Charlotte Ren Faire today, good times even if I had to share my camera and couldn't leave my 50mm on (my wife hates using it).

Didn't try the beer but the poster was cool!

Gee, what lens did I use on these two?

Peekin.

Whoops...that one was from my barn. Moving on...

Baby shoes!

Thank you , thank you everyone! You're right, using the midget was a great idea.....

Last pics from AZ as I am home now. A couple old cacti that I would see on the way Sahuarita to visit my cousin.

Driving back I saw a really nice Volvo Amazon 123GT Coupe. I have a soft spot in my heart for these old cars considering a '66 122 just about ruined my bank account and marriage when I went to put a 383 into one!

Here's what the full car would look like if I could have gotten a good shot of the whole thing.

And a very funny sign on base.

Okee doke, last set for a while.

Went back to the old Fairbanks ghost town (where I found the food pack a few weeks ago) and walked up to the old silver mill site and poked around a bit with my 50mm.

I think this sign is trying to tell me something, can't quite figure it out.

Caught my eye as I walked past.

Backstop to the old mill.

Bugs?

Something at the top of the mill.

There were several old homesites around as well. Nothing really left, but still interesting to walk around them.

Somebody came unhinged.

If I can just find all of the pieces...

I can put Humpty back together again.

I think this was the hood but I'm not sure.

Holding tank?

A collection of stuff folks found.

Some old foundations to something.

Danger is just another word for fun!

Now when you pick a paw paw
Or a prickly pear
And you prick a raw paw
Next time beware
Don't pick the prickly pear by the paw
When you pick a pear
Try to use the claw
But you don't need to use the claw
When you pick a pear of the big paw paw

And a final hike up Chiricahua Canyon. We did a steep 7-mile hike up Garden Canyon the day prior, so this 10-mile up Chiricahua nearly broke me off.

Random tarantula ripping across the road on our drive in.

No comments on most of these, I think they speak for themselves. Oh this is all with my clunky 18-55mm. Aperture kept getting stuck so a little kinetic coaxing on my part would get it to snap.

Arizona redwood.

Rarer than an albino Chupacabra.....me!

Edited, but it was what I saw.

And to embrace the strangeness of the Arizona Hilljack in his natural habitat, this was parked at the head of a driveway next to Old Glory.

Nothing in Tombstone, but I did spy a couple nice t-buckets on my way out.

As usual, only pieces of them caught my eye.

I've been a little busy the past couple days, so forgive me while I flood a few pics to the thread, not that folks will comment if they do mind. All 50mm on this and the next post.

Went back to Tombstone - final time - to pick up a couple t-shirts at the MoCo Accesory store. Ouch what a premium price, but a Tombstone Harley t-shirt is kind of unique.

Stopped at a footbridge on the way there that I've been meaning to hit.

And there was some cool graffiti underneath.

Of all people, I ran into a guy I was in Africa with about four years ago so we hung out in Bisbee drank way too much beer today. Good times!

Knuck knuck knuck!

Just what baby Jesus needs, a headband with a violin.

That's right 'Merica. Grab yo ankles and hide yo' wives.

Yeah. I've got nothin.

Dave, 12 years from now when your daughter is 13, she's going to be pissed you tried to feed her stuffed animal to a random dog.

A guy walked by us and said, "Yeah man, I'm just having a good time walkin' my dog ". Too funny.

Once more, I've got nothin.

"My Volkswagen Beetle", in the vernacular.

Bug bug bug.

Late 60s pick-em-up truck in the parking lot.

Bummed around today to a couple different spots. Mixed the lenses again.

On the way to Parker Canyon this morning.

12-20mm

An old holding tank and windmill next to the road. 18-55mm

This is bat country. Still 18-55mm.

Critter. 100s of these plastered on my bumper. 50mm.

Then I stopped at the Fort Huachuca Post Cemetery to pay my respects and remember why I serve. I didn't know anyone who was buried here, but that doesn't matter.

And a couple from a car show I hit on my way back.

Gnarly old 70s camaro.

Don't squash this bug.

Drool.

And my favorite, but not in the show. A dirty, leaky, old nasty looking panhead.

And to add to my thread. Some pics from today.

Here are a few from my trip to Bisbee today. Man, that is one cool town with a lot of interesting people in it.

Mostly done with my 50mm, but a couple with the 18-55mm (because I do get tired of MF on occasion especially when shooting for a few hours) and a couple with the 12-20mm.

50mm (until further notice).

12-20mm

Back to the 50mm

They let him out a little later.

18-55mm.

50mm

One of the stranger things I saw today.

Thanks fellas! I really do like the character my istDL gives. I've played with my wife's K7 and while I like all the whizbang features of it, and just doesn't sing like my little DL.

Wow. 173 views and not a single comment. Well, that tells a guy something. Admittedly the Photobucket compression kills the clarity something awful, but I didn't think I was doing that poorly.

Hit up some stuff today. Went to the Fairbank ghost town (found a drug runner food backpack and turned it in to the Border Patrol guys), then went to Lowell and met and had a conversation with a Mayan from a Californian branch, then went to the Chiricahua National Monument where my old arse hiked 10 miles in the canyon.

Some with the 50 and some with the 12-20mm:

The Mayan's bike.

Took a little walk around Tombstone today after class since I'm TDY down here now. Place is about to dry up and blow away. Recession hitting the tourism industry has taken its toll on this place.

Some with the 50mmm

Only place that looks like its doing well....

And then drove up to Schieffelin's monument because that place is kind of cool. It also begged me to break out the 12-20mm.

Bugs.

And fauna.

Went to Raven Rock state park today with my girls. My daughter is starting to get the hang of photography!

By her - with my manual 50mm.

Of course, she took a lot of duds too (don't we all), but she's learning and has an eye for it!

Here are a few more when I could get the camera back from her.

Took some random ones at work today since I had to be out and about. All camera phone, some post processing with the phone and the rest with LR.

I'm so hot.

As usual, its all about perspective.

MooooooCoooooooo

Winter shield on, and I moved from front indicators down to the forks.

More on this place tomorrow as we're going back (and I'm taking my SLR). Would you believe its one of our training areas?
