How does the Samsung NX1000 compare to the Q7?

I went to a bar last night with my Samsung, and took photos of the band, no flash used. I used my prime lens, no OIS, f/1.8-45mm, got good clear photos at 1/20 shutter speed and ISO 800 with no perceptible noise. These results are going to make it easier to wait until the Q7 gets reviewed and a comparison is possible.

Well, that makes me feel better about my choice. I've been out with it, using all the lenses, and been pleased with the results. However, my loyalty to Pentax (first one bought about 15 years ago) makes me feel a little guilty about using a Samsung...

I love my Pentax K-5 and K-01, but both are larger than I sometimes want to carry. I recently bought a Samsung NX1000 (got a good deal on it) and two OIS lenses (18-55mm, 55-200mm) and a 45mm prime lens, but am now wondering if I should have waited for the Q7. Does anyone have an idea of how these two cameras compare in the real world? I know about the sensor size differences and the lack of in-camera shake reduction in the Samsung. I guess what I'm asking is how do photos taken with each compare, what is the quality of the photographs, ease of use.

Two days for World Pentax Day was perfect - rain and fog on Saturday, bright sun on Sunday - went out both days, and now I have two contrasting sets of images to choose from (I think the foggy day was more fun-thanks be to Pentax and its weather sealed cameras).

I bet it'd look as good on an all black body, will see if I can find one to try. btw-I got a lot of attention for the K-01 last night, other photographers wanted to know what the heck that brick was. They all had huge Nikons with even larger lenses (maybe that's why they all had tripods, hum? :) )

And the photos are impressive. This makes my decision easier, although I do yearn for the 77mm, budget constraints will probably rule it out for a while.

And now that I've finished laughing, a report on my messing around with lenses. The Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 Limited is so much better than the 50/1.4 for sharpness that I think that is the walking around lens for me - it matches or is slightly better than the Tammy Beast (had to do that comparison on the K-5, Tammy Beast is too heavy for the K-01). AND I have found I own another prime that works very well on the K-01 (balance and weight are acceptable), a wide angle Pentax DA 14mm F2.8 ED(IF), so all I need for now is a small 70 mm prime - suggestions anyone?

After messing around with both lenses this morning, I discovered that the Tamron SP 24-135MM F3.5-5.6 is sharper than the Pentax FA 50mm F1.4 at the same settings. I didn't expect that. So I'll work with my Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 Limited on both cameras and compare against the Tamron (the beast - but a nice one). I really want to stay with the primes for the K-01. I have some investigation to do.

It was a very interesting evening. The sunset was a bust - cloudy enough so that there wasn't much color, but the city is dramatic after dark. Interestingly, I found myself using live view with the K-5 more than I have, instead of looking through the view finder, K-01 habits seem to be carrying over. All of the attached photos were taken hand held, sometimes leaning against a sturdy object. A kind soul lent me a tripod, but it drove me nuts, I move around too much, haven't learned how to use one properly, I guess. The first two photos were taken with the K-01 and the third with the K-5. I didn't use the same lens (I probably should have-my bad). I had my Pentax FA 50mm F1.4 on the K-01 (it balances well) and my Tamron SP 24-135MM F3.5-5.6 on the K-5 (my currentl walking around lens for the K-5-heavy but versatile, unbalances the K-01). The two photos of the bridge were taken 4 minutes apart (the K-5's clock was on Paris time) and the differences in sharpness may be due to operator error, different lenses (I really should have used the same one on both, but the air was damp and I didn't want to open the cameras) and traffic vibration on the bridge I was standing on. The only problem I had with the K-01 was the red button which is programmed to take movies if you bump it, which I found easy to do. I will need to program it to something else. I still love the K-01-it's light, flexible and is teaching me to see differently. It has become the camera in my purse so I'm not without one.

Going to Philly tonight with some members of the Delaware Photographic society to photograph the sunset, dusk, and dark from various vantage points. I'll be taking my K-01 and my K-5 with a couple of lenses. I'll get back here with some results tomorrow.

And I love it. I have a K-5 and was debating whether or not I should upgrade to one of the K-5 II. But when the price came down on the K-01 I jumped at it. It's light, responsive, impressively artifact free in low light and fits my small hand perfectly. I've been shooting with my two primes, SMC Pentax FA 50mm F1.4 and SMC Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 Limited (I know they are not that far apart - one was a present), haven't tried any of my zooms yet as the prime images are so sharp. The fog, me with new camera and cadillac hood ornament (cropped the last to improve composition) were taken with the 50mm. The 40mm lens was used for Alice and the Jabberwock as was the photo of the dancing figures on my Menora. Both were taken in my living room with ambient light (only one light on, on the other side of the room). There's no noise on Alice, and an acceptable (for me) amount in the background on the Menora photo.

Focus is easy fast and accurate, anti-shake works beautifully (I tend not to use flash), size and weight are just right for me. This Pentax is solid. I'd gotten a point and shoot Leica V-Lux 3 (with a 24X zoom) for a smaller camera-it feels plastic compared to the Pentax K-01 and doesn't focus as fast or as accurately. I also like that the Pentax K-01 is making me take different photos, since I must move to where the picture is instead of just zooming in. And, since I'm not tied to holding it to my face, the angles are now different. I'll be considering other primes to buy for this camera, there's a "suggested" list around here somewhere.

So if there's a cult, I'm in (chanting division...)

I have a K-5, and have been looking at the K-5 IIs, but when the K-01 dropped so much in price, I bought it as my Xmas-birthday present to myself. Have been playing with it a couple of days. Love it! Have used it with my two primes, Pentax DA 40mm F2.8 limited, and Pentax FA 50mm F1.4, haven't used either of my two zooms yet as I'm having too much fun with it as is. Will be going on a night shoot on Tuesday and will report back. The bottom line is I love it. It's the perfect size for my small hands, not heavy, and it's making me look at the world differently, not just from eye level. It was easy to set up thanks to Adam's very good suggestions. Thank you, Adam,

I straightened this with Photoshop Elements 10 filter "correct camera distortion", then used Nik Software Color Efex Pro 4 filters, extract detail and polaroid, to give this image the feel of just having been peeled back on a piece of Polaroid film.

Been waiting to upgrade from a K20D to a K-5 when my price point was reached, which happened 29 Dec 2011 - I've owned a *ist, a K10D, the earlier mentioned K20D, and have given away or sold, or traded in all the previous cameras. It was worth the wait. The K-5 can do photos that were previously impossible, I love it. I was considering getting the Leica V-Lux 3 as the K20D did not do as well as the Leica point and shoot camera I have (lots of noise at ISO above 800), but that problem has been addressed in the K-5. I'm one happy camper!

What lenses can be used with K-5?

I currently am being tempted to upgrade from my K20D to K-5. I need to know what lenses (accumulated over the past 15 years) will give me good images (given the vagarities of the photographer;)). This question arises due to the "full frame" sensor on the K-5, vs the smaller sensor on the K20D. The lenses are:

SMC Pentax FA 1:3.5-5.6 28-80mm,
SMC Pentax F 1:4.7-5.6 80-200mm,
SMC Pentax FA 1:1.4 50mm,
SMC Pentax DA 1:4.5-5.6 50-200,
SMC Pentax DA 1:2.8 40mm,
SMC Pentax DA 1:3.5-5.6 18-55mm AL,
SMC Pentax DA 1:2.8(22) 14mm ED(IF),
SMC Pentax DA 1:3.5-6.3 18-250mmED AL (IF),
Tamron AF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 LO TELE-MACRO[1:2],
SIGMA DG MACRO 1:2.8 150mm

Will I need to invest in (or beg as gifts) new lenses? Which of those that I have will do the trick? (And, no, I don't use all of them at once...)

Thanks for your advice

I'm a daughter and niece of photographers and went from in front of the camera to behind it fairly early, but didn't get my first Pentax until 1996, have been buying and being gifted with Pentax cameras and lenses ever since. :)

I currently have a Pentax K20D, and am considering upgrading to the K-5, but wondering how my current lenses will work with it.

So what do I do with all the equipment I've accumulated? Try to take the best photos possible, of course. I'm primarily a photo journalist in style, consider myself to be an advanced amateur with things to learn, which is why I'm here.
