Hello everyone,
A few months ago, I got lucky and was able to get a really great deal on a Pentax 645z camera. Little did I know the great deals would keep coming with some amazing lenses at some pretty low prices. People must have been unloading their 645z's when the new Fuji's came out and I was able to pick up my dream camera (that I honestly never thought I would be able to afford).
Now, comes the challenge. For reference, I'm coming from a Sony a7riii and I'm really impressed with how much better the image quality is (at least to my eye) on the 645z. The user experience just seems to feel more genuine with the 645z as well. I'm not sure if genuine is the right word, but I feel myself having to be more meticulous so I feel more involved with every aspect of taking a photo.
It's been a long time since I've really used a DSLR. I've been using mirrorless cameras for about half a decade now and I can tell I've gotten very used to letting the camera handle all of my autofocus needs.
I've shot with Pentax for a really long time (k-r, then k-3, then k-1) so I know af is not Pentax's strong suit. From what I can tell, the af seems to be in line with the k-5. Nothing to write home about, but also not a bad af system. I really want to master using the af on my 645z. Lately, it seems like 50% of my shots miss focus slightly. Rarely anything that completely misses, just that my target area is not the sharpest part of the frame.
I use the 645z "in-studio" for portrait photography. Sometimes on a tripod, sometimes off. Results seem to be about the same. My focus technique has been to focus on the eye and then recompose. I try to be as steady as possible when handholding. I don't believe it's an issue with the camera or lens because when it does hit focus, wow, it's beautiful how sharp and detailed the image is.
Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated.

My question about whether or not they would be good enough comes from reading a lot of comments on other threads about people recommending getting 645 lenses instead of 67 lenses. I really have no reference with digital medium format and only had the 67 a couple of months before it stopped working. I have no doubt I did something to make it stop working, but I don't have enough experience to know what. The only thing I can think of is that I may have removed the viewfinder without removing the lens first. I think I remember reading somewhere that you're not supposed to do that. Again, I'm not entirely sure that's what I did (don't remember doing it), but it's the only thing I can think I may have done. I tried to take care of the camera as much as possible. ---------- Post added 11-17-19 at 11:02 AM ----------
I'm debating getting a D instead of a Z because I'd like to only do manual focus. I know the Z is a much better camera, but I wonder if it's too much for what I'd like to do. I'd really like to focus on portraits and landscapes. The only thing holding me back is that the Z seems to be dropping in price pretty quickly and I don't know how good manual focus would be on the D. How was your experience with manual focus on the D? ---------- Post added 11-17-19 at 11:03 AM ----------
How's the focus peaking on the Z? ---------- Post added 11-17-19 at 11:05 AM ----------
Had not considered that. I have an a7ii that was converted to IR. I will definitely be testing out my lenses.

I can completely see how more modern 645 lenses would work better on the d or z. I'm just wondering if it would be worth getting a 645 system if I only plan on using 67 lenses (in the immediate, at least).
I guess what I'm wondering is if the 67 lenses would be good enough, or if I'd be let down by the lenses. I have a Sony a7r3 and purchased a kipon 0.7 focal reducer adapter so that I could use the 67 lenses on it. The results are fine, but nothing to get excited about. I wonder if they'd be any better on a 645 system than they are on the Sony. The resolution on the Sony is pretty close to the 645d, but the sensor size isn't.

Over the last couple of years, I've managed to get a hold of a few Pentax 67 lenses (mostly through trading other equipment I didn't use anymore). Last year, my Pentax 67 stopped taking pictures. I'm not exactly sure what is wrong with it, but it just doesn't take any pictures. I can load film, go through it, but nothing actually "records" on the film. It's been about a year since I last tested it, so I can't really remember if there is anything else going on. Since I was still in the process of learning how to use the camera, I can almost guarantee I did something to bust it.
I'm now in the process of getting the camera repaired, but I was also debating purchasing a Pentax 645d or a 645z and using the 67 lenses exclusively on either camera. I'm almost certain I'll get the 67 repaired, but the digital medium format bug is definitely there. I don't mind having to shoot fully manual, but don't know if it's really worth the money.
Does anyone have any experience with my situation? Anything I may not be considering?

Xpro trigger is definitely much better than the X1-T. Just make sure the Xpro is something you need. It could be a little bit of overkill if you're just starting out and all of the options/features can be overwhelming. The X1-T is much simpler and easier to use. I own both and use the Xpro when I need it and the X1-T when I'm not doing anything serious.

I purchased the Nikon version and never had any out of the ordinary issues, but I've heard of some people buying the Canon version as well.
Do you already own the V6ii's?

I was able to get high speed sync with two Cactus V6ii and an X1T. Works well. Occasional misfires, but was able to get the job done when needed. The AD200's are pretty great.

Any particular foam you recommend? I think that's the part I'm having most difficulty with.
