From an irrational standpoint, the unconventional design on the K-01 suffered a LOT of criticism. I always thought it was rather
smartly designed, but then again, there are folk who think Canon DSLRs are handsome cameras. Go figure.
From a practical standpoint, it lacks an EVF. >That<, IMO, is the K-01's principal fault.
The presence of a K-mount, with its long focal flange distance, is a contentious issue. Some applaud it, others do not. One way or
another, Pentax will have difficulty with most any mirrorless body because the K-mount will leave them damned if they do, damned
if they don't.

I'd always liked the aesthetics of the K-01 … I'd often quite fancied a 40mm a/f pancake … when the two became available at what I considered was a "reasonable" price I bought them! Not disappointed :)
The K-01 has it's limitations, obviously, but work within those and it's a very competent camera.
The ergonomics are "different", but so's the KP's ... I learn to live with these things and adapt, rather than complain about them.
The shutter-button placement is surprisingly "natural" when using the camera in it's intended position, at arms length.
Yes, it's easy to activate the power switch when retrieving the camera, but provided you ensure it is off when it's stowed that's not a problem.
Pity they didn't include all the Digital Filter effects that are available with the K-5 … maybe that's the price we pay for focus-peaking.

I like the camera. I wouldn't say I love it. For me, it was quite small -- particularly combined with a limited lens. Because of its shape it is easy to place it on a ledge or any flat spot and shoot a self timer photo -- it really is easier than with most SLRs I have used. The image quality is good -- probably not quite as good as the K-5 (no iso 80) -- but good enough to find excellent results.
At this point it is an old camera and one that had slow functions at the time of its release. But if you don't mind slowing down a little bit and taking your time, it still gives good results.

I also did... But not really biting the bullet, more like "finally, the price went down" and "A budget camera with a K-5's sensor"... :)
After I bought it, I immediately updated it's firmware to 1.03 and went out shooting with it and dig up all it's abilities and limitations...
The result is OUTSTANDING! This camera was grossly underrated and hated by many just because of its unusual design as they say it's "Fugly"...
I love the design actually, I love the minimalism of the camera, and it's a straight forward camera just like the Pentax K1000 or the Leica M9...
I don't know why the design is so hated by many, but when I went out shooting with it, many folks around me and fellow photographers immediately loved the design, they were curious, they were envy wishing they also want one (and those are Canon and Nikon users)... :)

tl;dr: Yes, get it. It allows almost everything a DSLR does, except PD AF and OVF.
Usually its better to invest in lenses than in the camera, since lenses will keep their value for years and are a huge part of overall IQ, regardless of what camera you put them on.
A great thing about Pentax is that you can use legacy lenses, which are cheaper, but still have great IQ. And the K-01 comes with a great 40mm lens. You seem to know about cameras, so you probably know the benefits of using a prime.
On the other hand, you might buy a used Pentax DSLR. You can get some quite cheap, like the K200D for 300 euro. But its old technology and no warranty.
edit: oh, and don't buy something if you will regret not buying the other thing. That's just general advice, because even if the product turns out great, you might still regret not buying the other one, which will ruin your experience with it.

But it is against the law to publish them w/o a model release. It doesn't matter if you can't recognize the subject. Suffices if the subject can recognize itself which certainly is the case with the first two images.
To publish sniper style photos (i.e., w/o prior permission) from girls on the beach is considered bad style by most, if not all photographers.

I brought the K01 as a backup camera on a recent trip to Hawaii. Here is an example of the K01 with the DA 12-24. It worked well.

I sold my DSLR and bought a DA 70mm limited with the money. So I am now left with my K-01s with 40mm XS and 70mm ltd. :) and a box of manual primes and zooms.

I don't really understand the whole "not for action sports" thing, maybe if you rely on AF than ya you'll have issues. But I find the screen way better than an OVF and this is coming from someone who mainly shoots just film on a MX, perfect vision and staring through a viewfinder for too long still makes me dizzy... If you practice the focus peaking you'll learn to use it to track subjects and since your not glued to a viewfinder you'll be able to see whats coming in and out of frame like a rangefinder. I feel if you want to use your high quality manual focus lenses for sports the K-01 will be perfect.

This image was cropped considerably from a series of shots taken with the 40mm XS in sports mode. The AF seemed to track the pair fairly well as they swooped around the water.

The K1000 was a failure, a Spotmatic SP500 with a bayonet mount and the 1/1000 marked on the shutter speed dial, a marketing afterthought that had no place in the camera line. It had a production plan of no more than two years, as a placeholder for the new, smaller "M" bodies Pentax was designing in response to Olympus.
Sales were horrible. Who would want a blocky, 1965-technology camera with no automation in 1976? The K1000 was a total dog of a camera.
Until it wasn't.

Like I said, that's nothing new or unique. I have been witnessing the exact same reaction and behaviour within some other industries, and it's always more or less the same. Sometimes even worse than the K-01 noise. Just change some key words within the noise.
The fact that a product from Pentax is still triggering a lot of passion, both positive and negative, is actually a good thing. It means the brand still has some sex appeal left. Let's face it, some brands just happen to trigger all sorts of passions in people, and it's a good thing for Pentax that they are still one of those. I think it would be much worse if the reaction was indifference all over.
Just for the heck of it, let's throw in a quick mind game. Imagine for a moment that the K-01 was made by Canikon. It's pretty obvious that the press and the talks would have been quite different't isn't it. Chances are the camera might still be in production, albeit not selling too well, even with a Canikon logo. Most people wouldn't still be getting it, let alone buying it but, it would sell better, because of the mighty mainstream brand. A lot of the press wouldn't dare badmouthing an offspring of the mighty Canikon.
Or, imagine that the Canon EOS-M was a Pentax product, and it's pretty certain that the camera would have been laughed off the map in no time. But because it was made by Canon, it is still appearing in the pages of each online store, albeit often discounted, and the press and the blogosphere are trying hard to find something positive to say about it.
That's just how the world spins.

My new toy (Tamron 90 2.8) arrived a few days ago and I snapped some quick photos.
These were two that I shot and am considering getting them printed on canvas for a friend who loves music.
Only problem was that I didn't notice I was shooting at 5MP resolution. Arrg, it's always something... |
