Well, I made my decision - Pentax v Canon v Olympus.
Solution - a PRS Custom 24 in Blue Matteo!!!
I should get it in two weeks or so, Christmas has never seemed so exciting!

To agree or disagree with my posting is the sacred right of every other poster, and I would defend that right whether or not I thought they were irrelevant, speculative, wishful thinkers, barking mad, or giddy schoolgirls.
Rumourmongering can be good fun, as long as you keep in mind that hey its a rumour and nothing more, and it is to be taken with a hefty pinch of salt.
No offence, but some of you guys seem to think that every half baked crackpot speculation or whispered hint is the Word Of God, ch4 v11 from the Gospel according to Pentax.
Or, perhaps I'm an inherently evil person on the payroll of the Satanists over at Canon, or the pagans at Nikon? :D

Hi Richard,
Call me old fashioned but I expected the guys working in a camera shop to know about, well, errmm, cameras! Perhaps I have set my expectations too high?
Sadly, there's never anybody with half a brain around when you need one.

On the plus side, a mate has just returned from hooliday with a shiny Canon 40D.
Very impressive.
And another mate is going to Florida next month, so he's offered to bring one back for me - if I buy in dollars with the £/$ exchange rate as it is currently that practially makes it free.
Very tempting...

Actually Ben, my post wasn't intended to be a straw, rather to promote a more honest and open discussion based on fact rather than rumourmongering or wishful thinking.
I'm about to invest in a K10D, but now should I wait for this miracle machine that might be out soon. Or might not be.
To say "I'm privvy to x and y but can't tell you" isn't direction, its everything but direction.
Though I'm pleased that you NEVER PLAY WITH THIS FORUM. ANGRY FACE.
The Non Disclosure element of the phrase Non Disclosure Agreement means just that, at least it has in the three that I have had to sign.
As for being as giddy as a school girl, well, each to his own.

Shhhhhh, gather round....
The guy making my lunch this afternoon told me he'd heard a rumour that Pentax are to incorporate GM-based nanobots in its new body, the K20i, it will be powered by a small fusion reactor and to use lenses based on the extracted corneas of eye balls grown in stem cell research laboratories controlled by an evil genius living under a mountain in Switzerland.

Crikey!
Is that rumour true???
Yes. In the sense that it's true that it's a rumour.

Hi Nitro,
Thanks for chipping in!
The point about the viewfinder on the canon and Sony is a good one - I had a bad eye injury a couple of years ago so my spotting peeper has to be comfortable, which it wasn't in the Canon and I forgot to add the to my gripe list.
Personlly I found Jessops disappointing, and I don't know what I'm doing but found that their guys knew less than me, and that's saying something.
The important thing for me is the robustness, as my hobbies are outdoors so everything takes a beating.

Here's a question - the Samsung is the same as the Pentax, give or take a quibble, and the two kit lenses are the same size, but they have different makers' brands on them. Are the lenses really different or are they shipped from the same Far East factory and then stamped up?

So, do you actually know what Pentax have up their sleeve or are you just playing with the forum?
For my money - which I'm about to spend - either tell all, or tell nothing.
As Sir Humphrey said "He that would keep a secret must keep it secret that he hath a secret to keep"
Or something close to that...

Hi Snowcat,
Thanks for taking the time to contribute.
Well, can I be bothered to mess about in photoshop tweaking every image from a weekend trip? Hmm, probably not, as an IT guy I spend my life sat in front of a screen so the more time away from one the better in my book!
Can you define favourite settings for say landscapes, to replicate the Scene modes that the Olympus has? I really wish Pentax had included Scene modes for dummies like me, advanced users can switch them off or ignore them if they want but to get up and running I think that Scene modes are a great help.
If you get time, please keep posting as you get used to the K10 - I have till Christmas to order mine :)

I often wonder whether reviewers really are independant. I bought a camera mag a couple of days ago and its pretty much a walking ad for Canon, as though they sponsored its publication.
As a newcomer I studied all of the available facts I could before going over to the camera shop and asking to play with everything they had in stock. With no axe to grind and no bias or favouritism it was clear to me that the K10D was by far the best value camera they had.
But then I'm only a beginner and not on the payroll of a manufacturer. Yet. :p

Same here. But first, one more question!
The K10D is weather proof - but are the lenses weather proof too?

Or do i need to get a special lens so that both the body and lens are rain and sand proof??

This sounds just like my thoughts, as a beginner I have no idea what lens to use for what picture and when I should change them, so if I have one lens that does pretty much everything then as far as I'm concerned that's a winner.
I'll certainly need a zoom lens, so why not get a zoom lens right away.
I really don't want to have to lug an extra bag just with camera equipment in. Believe me my rucksacks are heavy enough as they are, and if I take the baby hiking then I have him on my back too, so I simply don't have neither the space, time nor desire to pack an extra ton of lenses. Especially so if I would need to swap lenses in bad weather.
Much of life is a compromise, so I think my first compromise will be to keep things as simple as possible and get the 18-250 Richard, James and Miserere recommend.
Thanks again to everyone for helping me up the steep learning curve!

I've just been reading this article on photo.net and wondered what you guys would think of the author dismissing the smaller players out of hand:

Quote:
The market leader in the professional/advanced amateur photography world is Canon. If you don't have a major investment in lenses you will probably want to buy a Canon digital SLR. The number two spot is occupied by Nikon, which is also a reasonable choice. Fuji and Kodak have made digital SLRs that accept Canon- and Nikon-mount lenses. Once you get beyond Nikon and Canon it becomes very difficult to rent lenses and the companies that make the more obscure systems don't have a large enough market share to invest enough money to build competitive bodies. Leica, Minolta, Olympus, Pentax, and Sigma are the small vendors in the digital SLR market. Unless you have an enormous investment in lenses for one of these brands the only one of these worth considering for purchase is Olympus, due to its innovative Four-Thirds system

There are some very nice pictures indeed in the competition, whoever wins has done well but everybody deserves a pat on the back for sharing their work

I know what you mean there - I recently sold on my Ibanez Sabre and 100w Marshall for a US Deluxe Strat and Mesa Boogie.
Maybe I should just look at getting the kit lens to learn the basics and then look at additional lenses when I have more of an idea of what I'll be using it for?
Its a complicated business photography!

Ah, I see the problem!
Ricks are great in the sand, but for teeing off you need a Strat

Not to go off topic too much, but a Rick is my favourite guitar of all the guitars I'm never going to get round to buying. I'd seriously love one, but its behind the PRS and a couple of others even though you must have one to play The Beatles

Hi guys,
Thanks again for all your tips - would this make a good choice?
Amazon.com: Pentax DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL IF Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras: Electronics
So instead of getting the kit with an 18-50 lens and a 50-200 lens I just get this one and then I don't have to carry another lens around!
Does that sound like a good idea?

I hope you don't get sick of me asking what must seem like bone headed questions - I'll make it up to you all if you ever need help with guitars or golf!
This is the important one - what lens will I need?
Well, firstly what am I going to be taking pictures of?
Everything really, some indoors, some outdoors, I really want to do some great pictures of the baby as he's growing up. And some landscapes, I'm pretty keen to try my hand on landscape pictures.
Will I need one lens for that, or two different ones?
I know its a lot to ask but could you include the exact name of the lens so I can look for it online?

The twin lens kit sounds like a lot of kit for the money but is it the right choice? From your comments above, it seems not.

Using this dealer as an example simply because there's a big listing of accessories under the K10, which lens or lenses should I go for?
