A scene projected onto an APS-C sensor from the same lens compared with a full frame sensor or 35mm film would be effectively cropped, right? So in the scenario above with the subject 1.5m tall at 50m filling 1/4 the frame, is that 1/4 of a full frame and not the frame of an APS-C sensor camera, or is an APS-C sensor camera working things out to capture the same exact scene? From the casual reading I've done I assumed the scene is projected the same but the sensor is only picking up a smaller area in the center making the subjects appear to fill the frame more than they would with a full frame sensor or 35mm film.

I don't want to turn this into a debate on crop factor and whether a 50mm lens functions exactly like an 75mm on a APS-C or not. I just need clarification on that equation and whether the subject would fill 1/4 of the frame on both a 35mm sensor and an APS-C sensor or just one or the other. I'm thinking that is probably an equation from the film days and just multiplying by the crop factor would give the resulting subject size on an APS-C sensor.

Sorry if that isn't clear. I tried to explain as clearly as I could.

I'll have to remember that equation. Is that for digital aps-c or film?

thanks for the info pxpaulx I'll give them a call.

Lowell Goudge: I have read about the K135 f2.5 and it looks very nice. Do you think it would get me a shot with my daughter singled out at around 50-60 meters? That's my main concern. The kit lens at 50mm doesn't get near close enough when she's at that distance. I will be trying my 85-200 with me to the next game to see how much zoom I'd like.

Na Horuk: I'm looking for something a little faster, even if it only gets me another stop or so.

The subject line says it all.

I'm using a Pentax K-r. so far i have used the kit lens as my only other option is an old Sigma tele-zoom(85-250mm I think) but it's not very fast either. i will try that one at this Thursday's game.

For now my daughter is in volleyball so the action isn't as fast. After volleyball might come basketball and I feel like I really need something in the f2.8 - f3.5 range all through the zoom range to stop the action in some shots. i want something fairly good wide open but some CA can be tolerated because I don't think I'll be getting many large print quality shots.

I am open to older lenses to keep the price down below $200-300. I'm also open to FD canon lenses as they can be easily adapted.

Thanks ahead for any advice.

My son's newest band, Biographies, has made a couple of promo videos.

I'm posting here because he films it with his Canon T2i.

Anyway I would appreciate anyone checking out the videos!\

The videos are on Vimeo for the better audio support.

I used MPC. It is my default for all video files. This is the first time I've had trouble with a video, though.

I've got the K-lite mega codec pack installed. So I figured I was covered on that front. Motion JPEG .AVI is a pretty basic codec that I assumed was standard to play. I've got other videos that are .AVI and they play just fine. I'm not sure which encoding they are, though I'm sure they are something more size efficient that Motion JPEG.

When trying to watch videos from my K-r in Media Player Classic I can't usually get anything to play. I get a static image and no sound. Sometimes the video will play but without sound.

When I use Windows Media Player I only get sound and just a pair of sixteenth notes where the video should be.

The videos do play fine in Quicktime, though.

Has anyone else had these problems? If so, what can I do?

I get the stormtrooper statement a lot. "It looks like something a Stormtrooper would use." For the most part non-photo people like it. I'm not around many photographers so I haven't seen/heard their reactions.

Suggest me a Good Budget Tripod for KR !

I was recently at the same place you are. Buying my first tripod for my K-r. I got a Bogen 3011 with a 3025 3D head from KEH for only $72 after shipping. I was only rated "BGN"(bargain bin quality) but its in great working condition; a few scratches and scuffs is all.

Find the model you want and try to find one used. You could potentially get a pretty high quality tripod and head for your budgeted amount.

You probably want a ball head for doing wildlife photos. The 3d head is great for still-life, landscape, portraits, and pretty good for macro, but you'd probably want something a little easier and quicker to move and tighten.

I'm pretty amateur so take all I said with a large, but not lethal, dose of salt. I'm still learning these sorts of things myself.

Haze/Soft focus with some zoomed macro shots

On the 35-85mm the aperture is the culprit. Zooming out helps, too. If I set the aperture to 4 and up it solves the problem. It also does pretty good from 35-50mm.

There is something on one of the lens elements at the very edge. It almost looks like there is a coating that is separating or the glass has a chip. I'll try to get a photo of it and post it up later.

You very well could be right but I have some other pictures that you can see the focus plane is in view and the whole subject has the hazy/soft look. I'll try to find them tonight.

My macro shots have all been hand held so far. I've got a tripod on the way though so I hope that will help me improve my photos.

The first picture is at a lower aperture, higher shutter speed, same lens and focal length. You can see the obvious hazy soft look.

I'll look for more examples like this. The exif data is still there I think.

I just recently got my K-r and I've been using some old manuals PK lenses.

Sigma Zoom 75-250 1:4-5
Sigma Mini-zoom 35-85 1:2.8-4
Sigma Mini-wide 28mm 1:2.8.
A Sigma Achromatic Macro Lens Filter was on the Mini-zoom when I got it.
Recently I found a Hanimex 2.7x tele-converter/ext. tube at a pawn shop.

These all came with a Pentax K-1000 at a yard/rummage sale. Needless to say I was excited to learn that old PK lenses worked with all new Pentax DSLRs.

My problem is when try to take macro shots with the zooms. When I try to zoom all the way to 250 or 85 for the Zoom or Mini-zoom respectively the shots almost always come out looking hazy or like there's a soft focus filter.

I still need to test more to narrow down the exact situation it happens in. I know zoomed all the way does it. Almost certain it's only when I'm focusing close to the nearest point possible, and it may be at only the larger(smaller number) aperture settings.

Some pictures might help I guess. I'll have to wait till I get home to post some examples.

Well, my wife surprised me by telling me she wanted to get me a camera as a father's day/birthday present. Naturally this meant I got to go buy a camera for myself.

I've been following and researching DSLRs for a few years now waiting for the right moment to buy. I started off when the Canon XS came out. I'd mostly considered Canons until I read about the K-r somewhere a few months ago.

My father had recently found an old K-1000 with a few Sigma lenses at a yard sale and gave it to me. He wouldn't tell me how much he got it for but I'm sure it was a cheap deal. The lenses seemed to be in good condition and I took a few rolls of color and B&W to refresh myself with photography since I really hadn't done any SLR shots since high school photography class.

I found out the K-r had really great image quality despite my incorrect ideas of pixel count. I'd always looked at pixel count as a main priority. The new Canon Rebels sure looked good with 18MP. And my step-son had recently purchased a Canon T2i that I had tried out.

I was really excited to learn that all the old Sigma K mount lenses would work with the K-r!

So here I am a week after getting my new camera. I'll be reading as much as I can and posting some of my pictures for critique. I've tried each of the Sigma lenses as well as the 18-55mm kit lenses to mostly good results.
