Pentax K100D

Hei Guys,
Thanks for all the advice.
I ended up going for it - it seems worth it just for the lenses, but realistically it's going to be quite a while before I can afford more than this so this will do me nicely for a year or two.

The camera came from Dick Smith at Innaloo, they have the last 3 (2 now) in WA - an added bonus is that it's advertised on the website as the K100D, but it's actually the K100D Super.

Hei Guys,
Thinking about going DSLR - getting sick of paying $200 for a digi camera that lasts 3 months.
I can get a deal with this body and Sigma 18-50mm & 70-300mm lenses for $650.

The k200 is an extra $200 with only one lens, and the only differences I can see are 10.2 instead of 6.1 megapixel and an extra .2inch on the screen.

My question are, would you miss the extra pixels if you're never going to enlarge beyond 10x8. Also, what lense mount does the K100 use, is it a common one or something odd ball like the MZ60.

What I'm looking for is a decent budget DSLR that will last 2 or 3 years at least with moderate use, and this is the only thing that (to me) looks decent within my budget.

Opinions & thoughts please.
Cheers

Film & Airport X-ray

Maybe I'm being paranoid but I don't fly much and I'm only just getting back in to photography.
Taking two bodies and about 25 rolls of B/W and colour film on a trip - this will be in a pelican case that I intend to take as carry on luggage.

Will the security x-ray do any damage to the film (we've got 4 flights during the trip) and can I ask the security staff at Aussie airports to manually check the case instead of using the x-ray?
Thanks
Paul

Bulk Film

Hei Guys,
Yeah sod all is probably more of a pommie term, I'm Aussie by pommie parents so my language is bit of a mix LOL.

By bulk I mean the 100ft rolls as I have a dispenser, but I may even end up just buying a couple of 5 or 8 packs and save myself the hassle of dispensing - Lithos, I found the film on photocontinentals site, I'll go through it when I get home this arvo.

So what is a good 400ISO colour film - top level pro stuff is probably beyond my budget but I don't want crap either so probably something mid range.

Bulk Film

Hei Guys,
Going on a trip in two weeks (including hopefully my first time seeing snow) and with two MZ60's to take figured I would keep one loaded with B/W and the other with colour.

The only problem is that there seems to be sod-all colour bulk film available, all I can find is Fuji Superia 400.

Is this any good, if not what do people recommend and does anyone know where in Australia stocks a better range.
Cheers

PS "sod-all" is aussie for very little

Can this be done

Hei Folks,
Doing a basic photography unit at uni and our next assignment is about speed & motion.
What I would like to do is set up the camera opposite the end of the barrel of my air rifle and catch the pellet in flight.

Obviously timing would be an issue and I may blow a fair bit of film to get some shots but I want to do something different.

The camera I have to use is a Minolta (I know this is a Pentax forum but I'm not allowed to use my Pentax auto gear for this class) X700 shooting Ilford HP5.
Any advice on this?

Kodak B/W Film Processing

Thanks guys, I shall take it to the mini lab tommorrow - gives me a chance to ask for more cartridges while I'm there.

This is a reminder of why I normally only use Kodak when there's a gun held to my head.

Kodak B/W Film Processing

Hei Guys,
Out of desperation I bought a roll of Kodak BW400CN film.

I usually do my own processing but the film is saying develop with the C41 process which is a colour process.

Has anyone ever developed this film using standard B/W (ID11) chemicals.

Cheers

Hei Guys,
I managed to score off Ebay an adapter to mount the lenses on my old X300 Minolta, although I haven't had time to test it yet.
I've just bought a bulk roll of B/W so as soon as I get some assignments out the way I shall have a play.

A sandgroper for those that don't know is someone who comes from Western Australia - what us West Aussies call those that come from the rest of Australia I cannot say because this is a polite forum ;)

Considering film for the first time...

I'm starting to develop black and white (hoping to move to colour slide eventually) film again at home after some 15 years out of the game.

When I build a removable plug for the bathroom window I shall use that as a darkroom, but that will only be safe light and not fully dark capable so I use a change bag for loading the film in to the developing tank.

As long as you're careful and have a well ventilated room chemical sensitivity should not be an issue - my wife is highly sensitive, and she was 4 feet away from me when I mixed up a batch of chemicals from the concentrates.

I would say go for it, the chem side is lots of fun.

Lens Repair

Hei Folks,
I got given some Jap made screw mount lenses by my brother and one them (a rather nice 300mm) has a damaged thread and will only screw on about half way.

Is there a tap available to recut the thread, alternatively could I pick up a junk lense and swap the mounting collar over.
I'm a last year manual arts (what you yanks call shop) teacher so once I know how I reckon the repair will be within my ability.

I'm just getting back in to photographty after about 15 years out of it.
Picked up a pair of MZ60 bodies to make the upgrade to auto from a Minolta X300 - heard that the Minolta auto stuff is crap so came over to Pentax.
I also have a Praktika "PL nova1B" which I got given about 10 years ago and never used but shall drag out to play with some 42mm screw mount lenses I got given.

Lens Mount listing

Anyone know of a list anywhere that will tell me what Pentax bodies will take the 42mm screw mount lens.
I scored a stash of these lenses with a U/S body and would like to keep my eye out for a cheap body - cheap being a relative term with photography I know lol.

I'm in Perth, current studying Design & Technology teaching and starting to get back in to photography after about 15 years out.
I currently have a pair of MZ60's which were a cheap way to go full auto after playing with Minolta X300 for many years.

Pelican Case Supplier

Can anyone recommend a reputable dealer that will ship a Pelican case to Aus- I've seen em for around $85US and even with paying around $60US for freight it still works out about $80AUS cheaper than buying one here - looking for a Pelican 1500 with foam.
Cheers.

Hei Guys,
Thanks for the info.
I think what I shall do is keep my eyes open for a screw mount body, but not for a few months - the week I scored this gear I bought another auto body and a couple of lenses so brownie points with mrs smidsy need time to build up again.

My brother sent me a heap of old Pentax gear he acquired from somewhere.
The body is an "Asahi Pentax Spotomatic, which atm has the winder jammed - you can open the camera and see that it's half way through a wind.
Does this sound like an easy fix or should I just junk it.

I also scored 3 or 4 lenses (I haven't been through them yet) which seem to original pentax lenses. They're screw mount, (43mm I think I saw) would I be able to get an adapter to use these lenses on my aperture priority minolta.

Good all round developer

Hei Guys,
Thanks for all the info, looks like D76 or ID11 are the way to go.
The interesting thing about film vs digital is that there is a band of people who think film will make a comeback.
Maybe it won't, but I like developing my own film, and as a student design & technology teacher I'm hoping to be able to teach what they now refer to as "wet photography".
Eventually I'd like to shoot and develop colour slide film as well as B/W but that's a while off yet.

Hei Folks,
Going to be doing some black and white developing after a few years out of the game, and just wondering what a good all round developer is.

I should point out, I have some film in my bulk loader but I have no idea whether this film is 100 or 400 ASA so the plan is to shoot and develop a roll at each speed and see what results I get.

With that in mind I'm after a good general purpose developer - and since I'm a uni student, cheap would be nice as well lol.

I have to admit that I got my first Pentax about two weeks ago - picked up an MZ60 body off ebay for $50AUS and added a Sigma 24-70mm lens for $29.

Been using a Minolta X300 for years, but I wanted to go full auto and everything I read is that Pentax is way better quality.

Buying. Using PayPal.... my peeve.

Easiest thing to do is refuse to accept paypal which is what I do for selling and I will soon start refusing to buy from people who insist on screwpal.

I just bought some gear ex UK and to pay in UK pounds - the cost according to three Australian banks would have been $78AUS (not a lot I know) but screwpal charged me $85AUS.

Paypal is a rip off and they use dodgy exchange rates to inflate fees - it's ironic that they're owned by Ebay since if a normal ebayer pulled half the stunts screwpal does, they'd be banned.

MZ60 battery Question

G'day from Perth Australia folks.

Just picked up an MZ60 to replace a Minolta X300 - I've been loyal to Minolta for years but wanted to go full auto and everything i read is that Pentax is way better quality.

I was just wondering if there is an alternative (nicad/nimh maybe) to the lithium batteries in the MZ60.
I plan on using this camera a fair bit but $10 each for batteries could start to hurt with what I make as a student.

Cheers
