- They mention what to do for cameras with a mass of more than 400 g and less than 600 g.
- why do they need to specify something easily?
- Looks like a practical limit. Like all standard you cannot cover everything
- The long lens issue is probably also for a practical reason
- Measuring the blur is their way of a quantitative measure
- They scalle all results to the same sensor size which makes perfect sense. Any enlargement will be a linear factor of the basic blur measured for 35 mm.
I think CIPA tries hard here, probably not a perfect standard, but something to work with - still in draft mode.
The industry is not supporting CIPA to produce meaningless documents.

The film project may be profitable for a short time, but it is not Pentax core business. If Ricoh would consider the film camera project a core business, I would call them plain stupid. Ricoh needs to convince investors and customers, so please convince me. I talk to many film users and have a solid basis for my claims.
Question is why does the marketing department hype the film camera project. Probably they have nothing better to talk about right now. So what’s wrong with the core business? As an investor, I would be concerned.
Again, get a used medium format film camera and be happy.

In theory it could be possible, but honestly for a price difference of 300£ Sigma will not even touch the lens.

Diffraction becomes noticeable then f-stop values is equal or larger to 2x the pixel pitch.Your camera has 5 micron pixel pitch, at f/11 you will see that sharpness will not improve anymore. f/16 should be OK, but not great. Small pixels require large apertures. Large apertures are harder to correct.
Simple rule combines physical formula for diffraction at a given f-stop and some real world experience adding a factor of 2. Since f-stop is the relative opening, focal length does not matter.

Long explanation. Pentax offers no TC for fullframe. Get a K3iii to throw 26MP on an area where a K1 offers 16MP. Viewfinder image is much larger, placing a focus point is easier…compared to a cropped K1 view. k-mount IS a fullframe mount. Even apsc wide angles need to clear a fullframe mirror, expect compromises. Therefore, for me, K3iii is a tele camera or just a nice TC.

We often think about our own or outdated definitions or rules. Actually there is a CIPA standard here that defines how many stops you can claim for a given setup. While K3iii is rated at 5.5EV at 85 mm zoom, I doubt that the same camera yields anything close to 5.5EV with the fully extended 150-450 zoom. As said before, I prefer a beanbag or at least a monopod for support. Focusing is also easier with a stable setup since ibis dies not reduce shake in the viewfinder.
Time to rent an OM/Olympus or Nikon combo to see whether they really do better.

Looks like an old thread, but I think it is still relevant. More and more manufacturers include some kind of ibis and optical lens stabilization in their cameras. Pentaxians know that SR works with all lenses, but there is more than a simple number game going on. Most manufacturers claim a CIPA rating only for one or two lenses, some do better for more lenses if you dig deeper.
Results are scaled by pixel pitch. Nikon Zf performs better than Z8 because of wider pixel pitch. The real story starts with long glass. Here shutter/mirror vibration are more important. Rating a long lens stabilization as being 6EV better than without is something. It would be really nice to see more numbers here for different lenses. OM 150-400 has a great rating, but valid for 150mm. The 100-400 performs “worse”. Does Pentax 150-450 really benefit from 5(.5) stop advantage of K1/3 cameras? Sony publishes values for the 1.2/50…
Think a little deeper and it makes perfect sense even for Pentax to work on shake reduction for all lenses. Plus you get all the advantages (and some disadvantages) of a stabilized lens. The internet only discusses numbers and makes silly comparisons. Real values are missing.
Yes, you still need to make your own tests, but manufacturers are not making up numbers, they just do not present all the numbers.

I agree about the user group, but “later models” make me lol.
I went the half-frame road decades ago. Nobody uses T-Max or PanF on such a camera. Don’t expect a Minox, Olympus XA, Contax T…. camera. Kids buy this camera, they spend 100 bucks on it,
get the film scanned and complain about development costs…. double the frames per roll is a smart idea for this user group only.
Pentax should use marketing resources to talk about products with a future and not the little retro project. The project is too slow anyways, kids already played with used gear for a couple hundred bucks for a couple years now and will not play forever with it.
Get a decent used medium format camera to have fun.

You are asking for a camera in parallel to a K1iii. K1 is running for 8 years now, what makes you think that Pentax should present two ff cameras. Your spec ideas fit K3iii very well, why not get one?
Are you basing your arguments around the 43 mm lens? Let’s separate lenses from cameras. 31/43/77 sell well enough as is, I would not expect further updates - although weather sealing and silent af would be great. We will rather see one or two new designs.
The K1iii specs must be set for quite some time now, the lens roadmap will be set as well, some time ago. It is just time for Pentax to deliver - or change plans completely. Alternatively, the customer may has to realign with the brand.

Production of the FA 400 stopped 20 years ago - I am not desperate enough to buy one. I stopped looking at FA300/600 for the same reasons.
The DA560 was a silly design. Too long, too heavy, too long close focus distance… Pentax does not service them anymore - someone here buying new old stock got a full refund instead of a warranty repair. If I really want more reach, it will not be Pentax.

Nothing wrong with buying used. Pentax gear may drop in price quicker than others. The general question is what the gear is worth to you. The new pricing is actually quite reasonable. While some of us need to get into the system, others are already invested and buy the next new thing as soon as it is released.
My K1 is now 8 years old, upgraded to version ii. Still a great camera, but it may has to go soon if Pentax would really show signs of a new ff camera or in case Pentax stops releasing things that interest me. K3iii is nothing but an expensive TC.

150-450 is heavier than 70-200 and center of gravity is further away from the camera. Still fun, but a monopod helps.

Pizza is not at all understood. Not many places can make decent pizza, even less places make good pizza and only very few places make great pizza. The only advantage of pizza is that you can get all the tools and ingredients. The rest includes some art, passion and taste.
For a film camera it is difficult to get all the ingredients today. You have to start over from zero. Experience is lost, testing of parts is required… and you need to be quick to service a market that was already lost and now shows signs of life, but nobody knows for how long.
Talking about the art of food making, image drawing… and plain technological advances make little sense. Either you want a classic look to your images and stick to it or you think about what you want in a lens and benefit from modern technology. Get a Ltd lens or DFA*, you cannot have both in the same package.
Damascus steel is a popular thing these days as well. Most Damascus knives have not much to do with the real thing. The real think is a collectors item, handmade and not well suited for cutting.
We like to look at basic functions of tools and spice them up with art, heritage,… ingredients to show ourselves how special the tool is.
As soon as you think about numbers or need to pay a research department, it becomes difficult to pay for the artistic part. Did Pentax choose to be special for the fun of it, or are they benefitting from new/old legacy products to keep the brand alive. Ricoh is a company and needs to make profit. Whatever strategy works best is fine, marketing will position the brand and we have to decide whether we are happy with the products.

Pentax acted professionally. Customer reacted as expected. Stuff happens and in the end, we have to find a way to live with it. Understand both parties here. Would switching brand make a difference? Sure if it makes you happy, Many people I know bought Pentax for many years as it was the first brand offering weather sealed, affordable cameras. I don’t think other brands are better or react differently. Tough business, no giveaways.
I buy gear that I like and that I can afford to replace in case I brake it.

Yes. Need fine tuning. Values depend on individual camera and lens and cannot be transferred from other users. DFA70-200 fine tune values vary for 70/135/200, so if you work with f/2.8 at close range (dof will not cover the offset) you need to decide what focal length to use for fine tuning.
Enjoy.

hm... that also tells something.
If you look at mainstream forums, platforms... get a mainstream camera system. Pentax lives in a different niche. Whether it pays off to service this niche, only Pentax knows. Whether it makes sense to be in that niche with Pentax, only you can answer.
I don´t think Pentax went into their niche based on long term strategic planning. They just make the best out of their resources and so far they have a large enought base of supporters.

Are you the man photographer? Do you want to cover everything or concentrate on some scenes? I think the 35/50 are fine. Small, unobstrusive lenses. Zoom with your feet. Do you have K30 & K50? Think about a different prime on each camera. Add a 21 prime for groups, overview or closer range wider angle coverage.

Long ago there was a nice article about a photographer sacrificing a Nikon F3 at Niagara Falls. The camera was just dead after he took great images....today we expect more from cameras.
I have no problem using my AW glass in the rain as long as the sunshade keeps drops off the front element. No lens change, no SD card change and gentle drying after exposure to rain.

Yes, you should plan on buying new glass for a ff K1 at some point, maybe not right now.
What are you looking for in a K1? A system only makes sense in the long run if you know what lenses you want to use. There are new as well as used ff lenses from Pentax. If you want new glass and think of it as expensive, maybe K1 or ff is not for you. Glass lasts typically longer than the camera, so check what glass you need/want…

Pentax will not give priority to film or monochrome K1… that would be quite desperate.
K1iii is still the obvious next big thing.
doomed or not that is the question

A f/11 the K1 will experience mate degradation by refraction. KP will start at F/6.3. Testing at f/11 and f/8 because you see maximum sharpness implies that both lenses are not the greatest performers. A modern 300 should outperform a 200. With older glass things can be different.
The sensor samples the image. Sampling should be higher than resolution for old glass as you want to capture all detail the lens resolves. If the lens resolves more details than the sensor, you are not making best use of the lens. This ma sound counterintuitive, but today resolution costs less than glass.
