Current Walk Around Kits

Ricoh GXR and EVF with Voigtlander 15mm, 24mm, 35mm, 75mm and 135mm TeleElmar (mid 70s vintage) with a Metz 34 CS-2 flash all in a LowePro Stealth Reporter 100AW. Basically my old 35mm rangefinder kit with a GXR in place of the old Bessa R2.

Or K5 with grip removed, 21mm, 35mm and 70mm ltd and either 14mm f2.8 of 55mm f1.4 depending on the ‘walk’. All in a LowePro Passport Sling.

Anything more serious is a bespoke kit in an appropriate bag/backpack.

On a point of accuracy, Pentax entered the 120 roll film market in 1969 with the Asahi Pentax 6x7, before either the SP500 or K1000 were introduced.

Well, the Samyang UK distributors page shows it being available and it can be ordered from WEX and Park Cameras among others. Ultimately, Adorama and B&H don't determine what is available in the UK.

Pity it's not really wide enough for APC-S though.

Not too smart, maybe just not dumb enough to keep work in preparation on a live server rather than behind a firewall on a draft server?

I recently bought a GXR and M module as an early birthday present. and to provide a new home for my collection of M mount lenses from my old Bessa outfit. Having great fun using it – the rangefinder mentality certainly helps. Here's one from yesterday with a Voigtlander 75mm f2.5.

A medical milestone: Baby with HIV is ‘functionally cured’

As Mike points out, we're still waiting for full release of the data later today, so people in the field are unlikely to be laughing yet.

Snake - you are confusing two separate issues. The post-exposure prophylaxis you refer to is given as soon as possible after potential exposure to prevent virus replication. There recipient may not actually be infected, and it is in any case given before active infection developes (effectively, before seroconversion, when diagnostic tests for antibodies can work).

It appears from the media reports that the infant here had active infection, having been born to an HIV positive mother who had just been diagnosed during labour and had not had any treatment to reduce viral load. If this is the case then it is something new, although long term monitoring will be needed as it could still be dormant.

But we'll see when the paper is actually presented.

Like I said, I now live on the Isle of Skye. I can see the sea a couple of hundred metres away out of the front window, the Cullins out of the side window, and we have about two-thirds of an acre to tend, so I suspect that I get out more than most!:D

Yes, really.* If people give a reason why they've done or said something it's generally helpful if they get it right. Oh, hang on, this is the "News and rumours" thread, so anything goes:D.

Except that when the plurals of numbers are used as nouns, they aren't formed with apostrophes, so it should be "the '70s". Note the apostrophe BEFORE the 7, as '70s is a contraction of 1970s...

What a crass statement. You seem to live in a world of instant gratification and can't be bothered to learn anything by experience but just want the quickest route to a result, whatever the result may be. You have to learn to use ANY tool. Are the film rangefinders your Leica M lenses were designed for 'not good enough' because they have none of the technical features you crave? Are 5x4 field cameras 'not good enough' because they have no automation and rely on knowledge and experience of the medium?

No one cares what you saw (or what you used) – but they do want your vision (which is different to 'some fancy result'). Just because one person prefers a particular method to achieve a result doesn't make the others wrong or inferior, it just means that person can't use them, whether due to skill, aptitude, or not bothering to learn...

Just remember that U.S. "fired first" against Iran

I'm quite old enough to remember Reagan's reputation at the time without having to "do some research"! Two other events that have to be considered relevant are the death of the Shah (one of the previous Iranian demands) and the fact that the Iran/Iraq war had started and the Iranians were desparate for money. There were also internal tensions in the Iranian regieme as Ayatollah Khomeini repeatedly vetoed plans to release the hostages by the then Iranian President Bani-Sadr.

To add a little more historical perspective.

The widespread Iranian dislike for the US (and the UK) goes back in a major part to the unseating of the democratically elected Mosaddeq government by the US and British secret services, and the subsequent US backing of the increasingly represive regieme of the essentially weak and increasingly hated Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (aka the Shah of Iran). It doesn't work to set the formation of the Iranian Republic as some kind of year zero: things happened to get to that position.

The statement that "The only reason the (sic) set them free when Reagan took office was their fear he would retaliate" is based on either ignorance or predudice. There was a negotiated treaty in place in which, among other things, the US transferred 50 tonnes of gold to Iran, effectively disregarding its own sanctions. The Iranians are thought to have delayed the release to punish the Carter administration for its support of the Shah, although the idea that a Republican administration would have behaved differently stretches credibility. There is also the widespread, and previously mentioned, belief that the Republicans interfered with the negotiations to their own end.

At the end of the day its likely that most Iranians, although supporting the fall of the Shah, did not expect, or want, the equally repressive medievalist theocracy that resulted. Beware the 'law' of unintended consequnces...

What model of FT? The original FTs used a proprietary bayonet that won't fit. The later models from the mid-late 70s that I can remember used the 42mm screw thread that will fit via a converter, albeit with no aperture control. I think the final model before they went bust was a K bayonet, but that wasn't an FT. The question is, why would you want to?

The viewfinder fitting hasn't changed since the M series film cameras, so you will have to go back a long way to find a finder that doesn't fit, assuming they have reasonable QA. I wouldn't be without my second hand Refconverter A, but unless the optical quality is abysmal i can't see that a third-party offering should be an issue unless you are using it every day.

How much more would you pay with Obama's tax hike?

The lowering of the top rate of tax in the UK was done on idealogical, not economic grounds. It has spectacularly backfired as it still had to be financed, was accompanied by a range of cuts that would impact on those in lower tax brackets (ie less well off), have unforseen consequences (google "pasty tax") and affect charitaies This suggested that the government was out of touch (really??) and that we weren't "all in this together" which we never were anyway with the posh boys in charge. They've since performed a number of policy U turns and have been increasingly on the back foot ever since.

Well, no-one else has made any comments, so I'll try to help. I don't want to appear rude – I really am trying to be constructive here, but I'm not sure that any of them are competition quality other than maybe the tree, which I like alot. Many of the others need to be re-cropped. For instance Pen-y-Fan waterfall has an irritating strip of white sky at the top which takes the eye away from the waterfall. Crop back to the edge of the bright green grass in the mid-ground and you have an image to work on, although its still rather flat. Landscapes don't always need sky. The bluebell woods have distracting out-of-focus foregrounds and/or blown highlights. This is a very overdone subject so needs to be spot on if it is to stand out. I'm not sure if any of the sunset is sharp - the blurring on the bird gives the game away. The walkway in the cave shot is unfortunate and the out of focus/over exposed top spoils it. Again, recrop, taking away the bright edge to the picture which takes the eye away from the main scene. 2692 is exposed for the sky with no recovery for the tree, which makes it a dull picture. A couple of the shots of Ystrefellte have very bad flare. 2 088 either needs work on the left hand side, or cropped back to the falls.337 is the best of that group. Ring of Steall is nicely exposed, but is rather lost in space. There is no foreground to speak of and the horizon is half-way up, so there it's not showing off the sky either. Puting the horizon at the centre can work with a simple composition but in this case I think I would take some off the bottom as there isn't much going on there. With the lambs it looks as though the focus has missed. Very shallow depth of field, but the grass just behind them seems to be the sharpest. The ewe and lamb have burned-out highlights and some odd bokeh going on, although its a nice composition.

Sorry if I seem harsh, but asking for a second opinion is a good thing - it's very easy to get attached to pictures you take where other people might not see the attraction. It doesn't mean they are right, of course, but it they are the judges...

Keep at it - I've been trying for over 30 years and still haven't got there!

Pentax 560mm ?

No, it's the non-DG, but there is nothing in the spec sheets anywhere that I've seen that suggests they added a front filter option. As far as I know, all they did in the non-HSM DG models was alter the lens coatings and change the pattern on the grip... Sigma only seen to make filters up to 105mm (which fit the 120-300mm zoom) which is perhaps another clue.

Orson Welles was an American film director born 1915. I assume you mean HG Wells who was cetainly a member later in life but was an unknown 18 year old in 1884. With these schoolboy errors you expect to be taken seriously?

SIdney Webb was such a dangerous revolutionary that he became a democratically elected member of parliament and served as a government minister.

Please give some details of these BILLIONS you shout about - I'm intrigued by your curious suggestion that the Green lobby is (or is even capable of) outspending the industrial groups by a thousand (or a million) to one (depending on the definition of a million that you use).

130 years of Global Warming in 30 seconds

I'm certainly not questioning the medieval and other warm periods. But I certainly am questioning Fisheye's ascertion that they were 4 degrees warmer than today. They were also followed by very rapid cooling, (possibly due to major vulcanism in two cases), which is what contributed to his'times of despair and pestilence' - cold damp winters, and cool wet summers, which makes the 'warm good, cool bad' just as simplistic as the rest of his argument...
