I have a very nice minolta scanner. However there are no current drivers so it can only be used on an ancient computer. Good to hear you got your Nikon scanner going.

And if Dianne was working and bringing the money (I have no work) she would be in her quilting room. It's at least as good as a mens shed.

I was wandering what kind of projects people are doing or planning during their lock down. I'm at serious risk if I get the virus, so I can see I'll be hiding at home for the next 6 months. Yesterday I could only wave to my grandkids from my deck as they peddled past on their bikes.

Around three weeks ago, I decided my cornoavirus project would be to scan my slides. I have about 2 cubic yards of them stored in files, albums and crates. Some are more than 40 years old. They are of family, work and wildlife. My decision was based on purchasing an epson V800 flat bed scanner that will do a dozen 35mm slides. It's been very therapeutic. Dianne at times will help me sort family photos and she is always excited to see the family scans. It brings back many fabulous memories.

I've set up in our large laundry which has a long bench and I have a mac, scanner and large light table. I can stick crates around the laundry as I go through boxes of slides and have a large bin to throw out dead slidest. Lightroom processing will be done on another computer.

This should keep me entertained for at least a couple of months and is some consolation for not being able to travel.

Best wishes to those bunkered down, and please share your projects.

For my Antarctic trip I purchased a 17-135. It provided good results in challenging weather conditions. While my primes would have done better, they could have been destroyed and changing lenses wasn't really on.
The Arctic is on my bucket list
Hope you have a great family trip

Hi Grispie
Good question.
I'm lucky to have a good range of lenses. I love love my 60-250. I have the sigma 500. The sigma 500 can't go everywhere I go so I got the 300. The quality of my 300 is magic. It does a very respectable job with the pentax TC where with the 60-250 and the TC is is very disappointing.

Birding photos is my obsession. The pentax system in my opinion has a weaker focusing system compared with Nikon. On the other hand using the controls on the K3 is far superior to anything else in its its class (my opinion said politely). The pentax 300 is quite light compared to most alternatives.

My bird photography style is to have my gear ready to fire away. It can take years to get great shots of some species. It's about finding the opportunities to get in close.

If you want quick success with bird photos both a Nikon system with a zoom with good reach or a pentax using a prime should get great results. I think the TC on my 300 slows down the focusing. However it will do me as I'm hanging over the side of a zodiac photographing penguins and seals in sub Antarctic waters.

My pentax 60-250 was sensational in Antarctica. I did miss my 500 on a few occasions, but a really big lens is a liability in zodiacs. The only time I needed something longer than 250 was on the ship for the odd whale and seal. 250 was too long for many bird photos with the ship tossing around. I got very seasick, but I'm going to some sub antarctic islands in January. Who cares about food when on an adventure. I'll take a 300 and 1.4 converter as well as the 60-250. .

How long can I record video with the K01?

My understanding which might be wrong is that in the EU video cameras are taxed at a higher rate compared with cameras.. When a still camera can video over a certain amount of time, they are then taxed as video camera.
Also pentax K01 has a very large sensor compared with normal videos and there is a chance of over heating.

I don't think there is anything you can do with the camera automatically closing down.

I don't expect my pentax cameras to be full on video cameras. I purchased a canon XA20 video camera and sound gear for the big jobs and use my pentaxes and sound gear for small jobs

Macro beginners macro water bugs

Great stuff. They appear to be beetles. There are beetles and true bugs. Beetles start life as grubs. The adults have their first wings as armour to protect the real 2nd wings underneath. The two armoured wings make a flat line down the middle of the back. Beetles have jaws.

True bugs have a stabbing straw like mouth. Their young are small versions of the adult with no wings. As adults the wings overlap across the back.

These are some pics on my gallery. Educating Options for a Sustainable Future Some were taken with an old Takamar 100 bellows. Higher magnification was done with a pentax microscope adaptor. I have used flash for most photos.

sigma bigma birding focussing help with k-1

I'm thinking you are asking to much. I haven't tried my bigma on the K!, but will give it a go tomorrow. Focusing on a moving target was never good on the K5. It did help turning off shake reduction. When I used a 70-300 sigma, I found hand focusing more successful.

However, I do think you are asking to much.

I agree with the above comments. In my photo days, I never had anything longer than 200mm. which sounds pathetic now.

I'm a photographer than can be described as "desperate." I would go out with my bigma with a full size flash on top for many hours. The flash gave the lens a big edge and I was able to get many great shots. However I did need full manual control of everthing including the flash.

Many people have gone with the pentax 300 and then added the pentax 1.4 converter. I don't have the 300mm. The converter is crap on my 60-250, but sensational on my 100mm macro.

In summary
1. Expect the zoom on the bigma to extend/creep by its own weight, but it has a zoom lock
2. manual flash blast adds to the detail big time
3. Infinity at 500 is a waste of time - rule of thumb at 500 - if a flash can't light it, you would be better off with a pentax 300.
4 very versatile lens
5. Must be tolerant or desperate when it comes to weight
6. You are much better having the bigma than not have anything.

Most of these were taken with the bigma and some with flash - even on the beach

Underwater camera/ housing suggestions.

Thanks for your post. I had assumed that the Nikon 1AW was the best thing around without going for a housing. I would think my pentax and panasonic underwater camera would be very disappointing along with my canon G10 with underwater housing compared with your Nikon. I suspect the best options is another Nikon 1AW or a camera in a housing. There is an Olympus OM housing that isn't super massive that on paper might be the go. At one time there was a housing for the K5 (or was that the K7)

I'll be interested to see what your choice will be as I would like a much better underwater camera. .

What do you guys do for video?

I've taken some great short videos on my K01. It depends what you want the video for. Uploading it to any of the usual suspects eg Youtube or vimeo you only need a fraction of what you have taken.
I think the most important part of taking most videos is stability of the camera, knowing what not to do, getting the best light compromise and achieving the best sound possible.

I place the most importance on a good quality external mic and getting the sound right.

Watching other setups where people use a dslr with a dozen accessories to video so you don't even know where the camera is - isn't for me.

I have a semi serious dedicated canon video that I use for my professional video work. I haven't done any serious video work with the K1 but I've had good results with the K3 in some serious outdoor Antarctic weather.

I'm amazed at the results of all my good lenses on the K1. It shows up my basic 20 year old lenses as being a waste of time.

I'm extremely happy with the results and think the question isn't about photography ie getting results - but blowing technical hot air.

Apologies for being annoyed

Wishing you all a peaceful Christmas

Ricoh Launches Cloud service

Great about all the Wifii stuff - Which I probably don't need
But I would like to know if it makes a sensible backup service that will expand with me.
I do need a cloud service and if it is truly unlimited space then its a better option than the 1Tb Dropbox at nearly twice the price.
Any idea about the upside and downside?
