I live in Dallas, Texas and have yet to run into a single photographer using Pentax. This does not bother me at all. I was a Canon user for 12 years or so and switched to Pentax for the features and ergonomics of the system. I hated the weight of the Canon body and L Glass... but now, looking at new glass for the Pentax full frame K-1 the weight is unavoidable on the wide angle zooms and telephoto zooms. I also use Fuji when I want to travel light.

This shot was taken on an abandoned bridge on Newcastle Highway in west Texas. I discovered this bridge one night on the way back from shooting the Milky Way at Fort Griffin, Texas. The photo is of a friend of mind shooting the Milky Way through the girders of the old bridge. I was walking back from my car and thought the shot of the bridge illuminated by his headlight with the Milky Way in all its glory would make a good photo.

The lens is a legacy lens from the 1980s: SMC Pentax-A f/2.8 28mm I bought the lens a fleamarket for $5.00. What a deal!

Camera used is the Pentax K-1. This was taken during my first outing with the camera. I was not using the Astrotracer feature.

Well, yes... too many cameras can get in the way... and they have. I have told myself that I will only take two and one stays in the car unless it is needed for backup.
Glad you enjoyed your visit to my website. It has been in stasis for the last year or so for several reasons but I hope to begin a new season of photography with the K1 and the Fuji X-T1. So far I am very impressed with the K1. No photos worthy of posting yet but the test shots and tweaks I am working on look good.

I have decided that I will sell my K5 IIs as I see no reason to hold onto it. It served me well but there is no point in letting it sit on the shelf collecting dust..... plus, I need some FA lenses.

Thanks for taking the time to write.

Pentax Full Frame DSLR Officially Announced!

I am one of those who not only uses Pentax gear but also uses the Fuji X line of cameras as well. I was very happy to hear that, after years of saying "No way", Pentax will produce a FF camera. I use my Pentax Lenses (31, 43, 77) on my Fuji cameras and love the results.. yes, the magic is still there. Now, I look forward to seeing what Pentax will produce in a FF camera. It's exciting to speculate but I will wait and see. I use my K5 IIs and the Fuji X when one suits the task better than the other. I use both for Night Landscapes and Astro work. Exciting times for Pentax owners!

Looking forward to more news, specs and most importantly.... full size sample photos using various lenses.

You can see not only that but any changes you make in aperture or shutter speed as well as ISO. This is the one feature that DSLRs just can't compete with. and the thing to remember is that the EVFs will continue to get better and better. The Fuji EVF is so good that I really don't even think about it being an EVF anymore.

Looks as good or better to me. I think Fuji's JPG algorithm for JPGs is the best I have seen. I am not shooting RAW with the X cameras until Adobe finally nails it. I don't want to use yet another program.. Lightroom and Photoshop are all I can handle at this time.....

But..yes, the magic is still there with the 77 on the Fuji.

Yes, I have, and they work great on Fuji bodies. I have the 31, 43 and 77 and they all work. Manual focus with those lenses on the Fuji is easier and more critical than on the Pentax. And they do not lose any of their magic when mounted on the Fuji.

I have never liked using the histogram because a lot of what I shoot is moody, dark, strange exposure, etc.. When using a regular DSLR you clearly see what you are framing in the OVF but you do not see what your exposure settings will actually produce. With the EVF and preview mode on the X-T1 you see exactly what you get when you take the shot.. your shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc.. and any adjustments you make to them are presented to you in the EVF. You can only achieve this by using Live View on DSLRs and then you are trying to see what you will get on the LCD which is washed out and hard to see in daylight.

The EVF of the X-T1 allows you to see the shot (with the results of your settings) and you can easily make corrections and view their effect in the EVF. I had been shooting for a day in Monument Valley with the X-T1 and decided to use the K5 IIs for a while. I could easily frame a shot but I was not seeing what I would actually capture.. this feature is what has totally spoiled me in my use of the X-T1. I had to put the K5 IIs back in the bag and continue with the X-T1... it made that much of a difference to me.

That X-T1 EVF and preview mode is something no DSLR can offer and although the EVF is not like looking through and OVF it is extremely good (the best I have ever seen) and once you get used to it, you hardly notice you're not using an OVF. I know that is hard for some to believe but I was a doubter myself... until I began using the X-T1. What you see in the EVF is what you will get and that makes a huge difference to me.

Dean,

Personally, yes.. the X-T1 is worth it. MF with the X-T1 beats the hell out of my attempts at MF with the K5 IIs.... focus peaking is outstanding. It will take some getting used to it but once you do.. you will never want to go back. Recently, on a trip to Monument Valley, I took both the K5 IIs and the X-T1. I used the K5 IIs for half an hour out of six days out there. The thing that really killed me was using the K5 IIs and not seeing exactly what I was going to get when I pressed the shutter release. That EVF has totally spoiled me. I am keeping my K5 IIs because I have a good investment in lenses and it is a great camera but the Fuji has really won my heart.

While the K5 IIs is small it is not as small as the X-T1... and the manual controls on the X-T1 are outstanding.

The EE-S screen might help but it will never be as accurate as focus peaking on the X-T1. I know it's a tough decision but I have absolutely no regrets. Good Luck.

I have the K5 IIs and the Fuji X-Pro1, X-E2 and the X-T1. I use both and enjoy both.

The Fujis have lot going for them... lenses continue to come forth and they are all quite stellar. The new 56mm f/1.2 is frankly amazing.. and the bang for the buck is probably the best thing going right now. IQ is extremely good. Camera is small and very well made. The X-T1 EVF is in a class by itself... and very easy to use, even for an old DSLR guy like myself.

I use the K5 IIs for concert work and anything involving action but for most anything else I use the Fuji. The X-T1 tracking is also quite good.. will try it on the next concert gig I get.

There is no perfect camera and that goes for Pentax and Fuji... and of course, all the rest.

If your head was turned by the Fuji... you are not alone... and you obviously know a good thing when you see it. There is nothing wrong with using two or more systems. Cameras are tools, not a religion.

You can see the work I have done with both the Pentax and Fuji on my website. Personally, I think they compliment each other quite well.

Thanks, Rupert. I've only been shooting at night since June of this year and am still learning. It's a lot different than my other photo efforts and very enjoyable.

Great portrait shot. I've not ventured into that area but may try my hand at it at some point in the future.

There's no better way to get over returning a camera than to get out and shoot with what you currently own. In my case that is the K5 IIs.

I love doing photography at night. It offers a totally different feeling than shooting during the day. It's quiet and lends itself to really taking your time to enjoy photography on a different level. Normally it is much quieter at night but on this occasion two competing packs of coyotes were trying to see which group could be the most vocal... but it did add to ambiance of the evening under the stars in west Texas.

This shot was taken last night near Fort Griffin, Texas. There was a half moon providing good ambient light but not enough to turn night into day during a long exposure. This little blacksmith's shop was an unexpected find. I was given access by the custodian of this historical area and was surprised to find the shop to be so complete in period equipment and its 1870s appearance.

There were no lights in this building but I have learned to bring a variety of lights for night work from soft LED floods to little LED contraptions I have made myself as well as a variety of flashlights. I used two of my little handmade LED lights to light the interior of the building, a red and amber LED, powered by a 9 volt battery. The type I used were ultra-bright and designed to run off of a 12 volt battery but 9 volts will run them for over 40 hours continuously.. no kidding, I created my first one and powered it for five days straight on a single 9 volt battery. The exterior of the building was painted with soft light from and LED flashlight with a slight amber filter over the lens.

For the interior lighting I control the intensity of the light in a very low tech manner... toilet paper... you need less light, you wrap toilet paper around it until you get the subdued light you need... this also allows the light to diffuse as well. Toilet paper is a very handy thing to have in the field.

I used the Pentax K5 IIs and the DA* 16-50 for this shot. Set up focus using AF and then switched to manual focus and locked it in. Exposure was 15 seconds at f/2.8 ISO 800. Lightroom was used for initial post-work then I moved the file to Photoshop CS6 for final tweaks, re-sizing and sharpening.

Hope you like it.. I had a great time taking it. Left Dallas at 10am Saturday morning and returned at 4:20am Sunday.. a full night of shooting and enjoying being out of the big city.

I spotted this old car and many others in a field in Sunset, Texas. I made my way to the house on the property and asked the owner if I might photograph it. He said, "Sure but watch out for the snakes!"

The sun was setting, which was appropriate, as the little community is called Sunset, Texas. The drive was a little over an hour or so from my home in Dallas.

When I photograph old cars such as this I can't help but wonder who owned it, how much pride they felt in owning it when it was new, how many Sunday drives were taken with it and how it came to be sitting in field, rusting away, year after year.

I'm always thankful for finding these relics from the past when the light is right and I can take my time and enjoy the old car, possibly as much as the first owner, if but for just a few minutes on an October day at Sunset.

Taken with the K5 IIs and the DA* 16-50mm

Go for it, Richard. I have found that not limiting myself to daytime photography has given me the opportunity to shoot anytime... it's a different world after dark and quite fun. My shooting buddie and I are heading to an auto graveyard tonight to light up old cars from the interior and play a bit with painting with light.... might get some starscapes in as well. It's a one hour drive to the graveyard but it should be worth the time spent going there. I tracked down the owner and asked and got permission for the entire evening.
